Fiji Trip Sept 2014 It all started with a bag of unwanted baby clothes destined for St Vinnies... but God had other plans.. I had read about the Mission Trip in Saturdays Observer.. I said to my hubby I might give that number a call and see if they would like them. Fr Daniel was really happy about it and asked if I could bring them down, saying there was a craft group going. As I had been involved in craft and sewing before and had been missing going, I jumped at the chance of going. I was welcomed as soon as I walked in the door, such beautiful ladies. There was lots of talking about going to Fiji, and someone said Why don't you go? Wow, Fiji. Never been anywhere without my man... A stepping out of the boat experience.. Next I know the ticket is booked, a great excitement welled up inside me. Everyone worked so hard and the support was wonderful. Soon the day arrived to set off, what to expect!!! even though it was a long trip, I didn't want to miss anything. St Christopher's; our home for the next 2 weeks, what a humbling experience to share in their lives, to feel their deep love for Jesus, their singing.. just beautiful... I was so blessed to help out with the little ones the first week, didn't take long before they melted my heart. We were involved in activities with them, the Hibiscus Festival was a hit, they loved the rides, face painting, etc. we also did card making, art and hand sewing. The Sisters and volunteers are the most beautiful people, the love they have for the children is something you have to see for yourself. I really enjoyed having time with my new found friends from Gladstone, listening to their life stories, doing amazing things with them like sailing through the tree tops on the Zip; must admit that first step off that platform was a bit scary.. also covering ourselves in mud at the Mud Pools.. Loved it... What a privilege to go and pray for a dear lady in her home, and to share with people in the street and taxi drivers; also to have time at a youth group and visit a small village and to see first hand their life style. Fr Daniel has such a heart and vision to reach out to those in need, I feel so humbled to have shared in God's plan.. it is something I will never forget and I will hold you and them in my heart and prayers... 2 From your Priest One of the articles I read about New Evangelization by Pope Francis A Church that only serves its own members would betray its own purpose and Christ made me read some of his books and homilies. He is very clear in his idea of reaching out. We are in the time of great mission to engage ourselves with the greater community. Matthew 11: 5 says, Jesus answered them go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. Here Jesus reminds us the command is not only to serve the material needs of the poor, but also even more importantly to recognize their spiritual needs. This encouraged me to look to more spiritual work when we went for our mission trip than any physical work. Pope Francis says, we can build many things, but if we do not witness to Jesus Christ then it doesn t matter. We might become a philanthropic Non-Government Organisation but we wouldn t be the church, the Bride of the Lord. Fiji Mission trip - we had a wonderful time in Fiji, everyone had a great experience through this. We expected some things but God lead us in a different ways and used us in various ministries. Through our trip we spent lot of time with the St Christopher s orphanage; we went to three different parishes, St Luke, St Christopher and another St Luke s in a village. Through our trip we helped St Christopher s to buy a new printer and gave them a laptop for their church purpose. We also gave monitory donations to the village parish and blessed them with lot of gifts to the village people. The funds we raised we used this to help the people of God and also to help St Christopher s home. I thank all our people for their generosity and hard work to make this trip fruitful. Our sincere thanks to Andrew and Felicity who donate all the bread for all centres of our Brekky Club Programme Remembrance day Queensland Police celebrates 150th anniversary this year. We are organizing the Police Remembrance Day service on the 29 th Monday at 10 am. Please come and participate in this special service. If you have time please help us with morning tea. Confirmation and Thanksgiving Lunch - As I mentioned earlier our confirmation and first Holy Communion service will be on the 23 rd November Usually we have our thanksgiving lunch in the month of August but this time we will have a big celebration of thanksgiving and confirmation together. Christmas programmes - please pray for our Christmas programmes this year. We are planning to have more outreach programmes and also trying to concentrate in the new developed areas. We want to try singing in the parks and meeting new people in the Christmas time. So please specially remember us and join us in the great mission of God. Operation Christmas Child - Please help us in making boxes for Operation Christmas Child if you want to contribute please contact Bred Krebs or the parish office. Carport - Thanks for Allan and his group for building the carport for me, now I can park my car in the shade if I am not lazy. Fence and playground - St Saviour s playgroup mums want to have a little playground for the children. We planned this in 2012 but never come to point of doing it, please pray about this, so that we will do this work for them. As you all may know this group is growing and outreaching in the community. Club 60 - as you are aware Club 60, which meets on the first and third Thursdays in a month, is growing a lot with many new people and exparishioners joining the team, if you are interested please contact Bill and Lindsay McMillan. We baptized Lincoln John Purkis and Piper Jayne Lewis at the end of last month and are going to baptized Bailey Parker King and Tevita Keith Tuineau this month so please continue to pray for them. On the 27 th September Charley Jones-Prizeman and Andrew Geddes will be married here at St Saviour s so please continue to pray for them as the begin their married life together. Your s in Christ Daniel 2

Fr Daniel s induction as Police Chaplain The Queensland Police Chaplaincy Service seeks to enhance the lives of all employees of the Queensland Police Service by providing professional Christian Ministry which is tolerant, supportive and meaningful. The Police Chaplain is to provide a pastoral ministry exercised with sensitivity to the belief systems and religious orientation of individual Queensland Police Service employees. The Police Service, or any of her members, may request a chaplain to provide support that ranges from the blessing of new police facilities to officiating at the weddings, baptisms, funerals and memorial services of Queensland Police Service members and their extended family. Police Chaplaincy in the Queensland Police Service is a particular ministry to which God calls some individuals who have training and experience in the areas of pastoral care and theology. The ministry that Police Chaplains perform is an extension of their normal ministry The primary expression of chaplaincy is exercised in a parish setting. the provision of pastoral care to all From left to right: Full time Regional Police Chaplain Rev Glenn Louttit, Capricornia Police District Inspector Darren Somerville in command of the Gladstone Patrol Group, Part-time Chaplain Rev Daniel Paulraj, Volunteer Police Chaplain Rev John Coleman (Biloela) and Volunteer Police Chaplain Rev Lindsay Howie (Rockhampton) (Continued on page 8) 3

Vale - Muriel Irwin This lovely arrangement of flower was placed in front of the altar on Sunday They were sent here to St Saviour's by Sherron Fielden; the granddaughter of Joe & Muriel Irwin. Many Gladstonians and Parishioners will remember Joe and Muriel. They were wonderful workers in this Parish and would have been well known through out the Diocese. Joe, at one time, being the Bishop's Warden. Joe and Muriel together with Janne and Roger Oborne were the instigators of the This n That Shop. The first shop was built on the site of Joe and Muriel's home and baker shop. Joe died some years ago now - however Muriel has just passed on. Her Granddaughter, Sherron asked that Muriel's favourite hymn Abide With Me be played during the Service and sent the following message to be read to the congregation. In Sherron's words... Muriel Irwin left us on Tuesday 12 th August, aged 94 years. She resided in her own home in Caloundra until late June when the pain of a broken back got too much and she was placed in nursing care. Being the independent person she was, she didn't wish to stay in that situation too long and asked the Good Lord to take her. In the weeks preceding, all members of family got to spend time with her, and I managed to announce that I was expecting the first of the next generation of the family, which made her light up with joy. Muriel was cremated Thursday 14 th August and her ashes will be brought to Gladstone and placed alongside Joe's in the Columbarium. She will obviously be sadly missed by all of us and remain in our hearts always. Just a note:- Muriel was still receiving the Harbour Light, Gazette and Beacons right up till her passing. 4 Solution on page 10

The story of a Carport Erection of a carport in a week. I am pleased to say we achieved that with the carport which used to be at our place in Auckland Street. We are changing our driveway Parish Roundup and the carport had to go. At the same time, the big gum tree near the rectory went and Daniel needed shade to park his car. But wait! The rectory is also in Auckland Street, or pretty close so could we take our carport down the road to the Rectory? A place was chosen and footings were dug. Once the piece of ground had six brackets sticking up, we were ready An appeal at St Saviour's and St Peters on Sunday 7 th September resulted in a great team turning up at our place the very next day. Workers crawled all over the old carport carefully marking, removing, unscrewing and levering things apart. In no time, it seemed, the frame was on John s trailer with red bunting all over it and the other supplies on top. Feeling like a Harbour Festival float, we paraded down Auckland Street safely and unloaded at St Saviour's. Tuesday was spent erecting the structure and Wednesday, pouring the slab. Special mention of Dave Williams for his knowledge of earthworks, concrete and everything building. A big thank you to all the hardworking volunteers: Richard Crawter, Serge Delpeche, Viv Duckham, Bob Fortier, John Hinde, Rod Kamholtz, Alan McLeod, Lori Rapa, Alipate Tuineau, Dave Williams, and Dayman Wright. 6 What are you reading? Title : The Happiest Life Author : Hugh Hewitt Publisher : Nelson Books Year : 2013 ISBN : (IE) With a title of The Happiest Life, this book could have been a fairy tale, or a self-help book full of saccharine sweet clichés, such as are found in many bookshops. But, not so, it is a gentle book, one which provides practical examples of its subtitle Seven Gifts, Seven Givers & The Secret to Genuine Success. The author has cleverly woven personal experience, gentle humour, anecdotes and Biblical examples into each of its chapters. Divided into 2 main parts, The Gifts and The Givers, in each section he carefully goes through each of the gifts and the givers. His list of gifts is somewhat different, including Encouragement, Energy, Enthusiasm, Empathy, Good Humour, Graciousness and finally Gratitude. As for the Givers, well you will have to read the book to find out who they are. Along the way, he shares with the reader his own story, his radio program and his many guests. All of his anecdotes carefully support his key points, so I would describe this book as well constructed. But literary analysis aside, this is a really lovely book and well worth the read. I came away inspired and happier. Thank you Mr Hewitt for sharing your thoughts with us. Allison Hutton Please send your stories, comments and suggestions to: gladstone@anglicanrock.org.au or drop them to the parish office, 70 Auckland St Gladstone or post to P O Box 72 Gladstone 4680 by 1st of each month 6 A couple of new faces, David Kingston, Serge Delpeche and Ken Stovell stepped in to help Deacon Alipate at the Clinton State School Brekky Club whilst the regular helpers were away at the parish mission trip to Fiji.

Essentially pastoral care is initiated by the chaplain "walking the floor" to meet Queensland Police Service members in their work environment. The building of this pastoral relationship through workplace contact is fundamental to the function of the Police Chaplain. The Police Chaplain also works cooperatively with other employee assistance personnel Human Service Officers and Peer Support Officers - to provide support to members. MY LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT. 9 A Celebration of Love Wedding - Karen Blanchford and Wade Hodgson On the 14 th February 2014 Fr Daniel joined together in marriage Wade Hodgson, son of Leigh and Lorelle of Calliope and Karen Blanchford, daughter of Carolyn and Roger of Guernsey, Channel Islands in an intimate ceremony at the Calliope Union Church. Karen was accompanied by daughters Eloise and Maya and Wade s long-time friends Daron Foster and Geoff Watson were his groomsmen. It was a beautiful wedding and the little church looked lovely all decked up in its ribbons, bows and flowers. An afternoon tea was held afterwards at Daron and Susan Foster s home in Calliope. On 12th July 2014 Leigh and Lorelle, together with their daughter Erin, travelled to France to attend the renewal of wedding vows between Karen and Wade. The wedding was held in St Pierre Pujols, in front of Karen s parents and friends from Guernsey and the UK. Karen s father Roger accompanied her down the aisle and Karen s sister Hayley was her matron-of-honour. Wade s mates, Geoff and Daron were once again his best men. The two weddings could not have been more different. Calliope still has the feel of a typical Queensland country town whereas the age-old stone church in Pujols overlooked the vineyards as far as the eye could see. The wedding reception was held at Chateau Rigaud an absolutely magical setting. Church Saint Pierre Pujols France 9
