2 Letter from the Acting Principal Dear Applicant, Thank you for your interest in the post of Lay Chaplain. This is an exciting time to join our school; following successful Section 48 and Ofsted inspections this term, both of which have graded us as Good, the school continues to progress and develop. Our community has changed considerably in recent years; the loss 5 years ago of free transport for Catholic families to come us as a faith school had a huge impact on applications, but we are now at full recruitment and offer a vibrant and cohesive community where Catholicism is still very much the dominant faith represented, but where young people of other faiths and traditions also join us to experience and thrive within the framework of our Catholic thos. Both inspection teams commented at length on the care and compassion which is the hallmark of our school; both commented on the wonderful relationships between staff and pupils and between the pupils themselves. Becket s is a true family where all are welcomed and valued and in recruiting a Lay Chaplain, we seek to appoint a key member of this family. The successful candidate will work alongside Senior and Middle leaders in broadening further the pastoral work of our Catholic school and crucially, take the lead in further developing the worship and evangelization our young people experience. The Governors wish to make the following appointment for February 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Governors invite applications for the post of Lay Chaplain from practising Catholics in good standing with the Church. The School Chaplain provides spiritual and pastoral support to students and staff of the school. This position is seen as crucial in fulfilling the School's mission. The Christian faith and commitment of the Lay Chaplain will play a central role in bearing witness to this mission and maintaining the distinctive Catholic nature of the school. Do you: Live as a disciple of Jesus Christ in the Catholic Church? Have a sound understanding of the Catholic faith and how to share it with others? njoy working with young people and adults? Know how to organise and plan liturgies and events such as the celebration of Mass, retreats and fundraising activities? If so, we would like to hear from you. You will need good communication skills and the ability to work with a wide variety of people, including pupils, parents, teachers and clergy. Use a collaborative style of ministry that encourages a team approach to chaplaincy to develop and lead a chaplaincy team. To offer opportunities of prayer for staff and students. To celebrate and share the faith life of the school with the wider community To include the local parishes in school celebrations, where appropriate Help with sensitive issues, advising on the Church s teaching The Chaplain as educator To support and enhance the R curriculum, where appropriate The Chaplain as professional Have input into the school development plan, its operation and review Advise the Senior Leadership Team, where appropriate Challenge and support on standards, morals and the values of the Christian life To meet regularly with the line manager To engage in a regular process of appraisal To report to and work with Governors/Directors to promote the Catholic ethos and distinctive nature of the school. Attend where possible staff meetings and any other meetings as appropriate To engage with Continual Professional Development (CPD) relevant to the role of chaplain. 9 Dear applicant, It s a particularly exciting time for the Diocese of Leeds youth services. We are in the midst of developing a new youth service strategy across our parishes and schools and we recognise the crucial role of the Lay Chaplain within this. Bishop Marcus s letter outlines our mission. Knowing and loving Our Lord Jesus Christ, accepting the graces He freely gives to us in the Sacraments of the Church, and understanding how faith in Him can make a real impact for good in our lives and in the society in which we live, is at the centre of the Church s mission in education.
