(#1)For those of you who don't know me, I am Caitlin Bilton and just a few months ago I got back from a YWAM or Youth With a Mission missions trip and today I get the pleasure of telling you all about my amazing adventures. As well as an opportunity to thank this amazing church who have helped me spiritually for many years, and also helped me financially to make my mission possible. In the Fall of 2016, God took my desire for missions and presented me with the opportunity to participate in a medical mission, which would mean training in New Zealand for three months and then to the country of Vanuatu for the outreach portion of the mission. (#2)The adventure began in January of this year when I arrived in New Zealand and met the 63 people from 12 different nations that I would be spending the next three months exploring my faith with and training for the medical part of the mission.
(#3) When we first arrived we were greeted by a traditional Maori warrior. (#4)My home for these three months was a marine vessel docked in beautiful Tauranga harbour where I shared a small room below deck with five other girls. The ship had originally been a Chinese fishing vessel, so you can only imagine how poorly I fit into the beds! (#5) There were a handful of us who volunteered to help fix up the ship in the afternoons. I never thought that I would develop the skills of painting a ship deck, mucking out the dead fish in the engine room and becoming proficient with a wire wheel.
(#6)Our days consisted of lectures with speakers from all over the world who would work with us for a week or two at a time. I went deeper into my faith than I ever thought possible. The topics included Father, heart of God, worship and intercession, defending your faith, just to name a few. In the afternoons we had medical classes to prepare us as well as possible to provide basic medical care in developing nations. (#7)In early April we set sail in the ship that had been home to me for the past 3 months. I spent the first couple hours admiring the dolphins playing alongside the ship and watching the horizon. The first three hours were great, the next 5 days were awful as they were spent with my head in the toilet. I ve never been so happy to see land!
(#8)Vanuatu is a small country in the South Pacific, close to Fiji and is made up of 83 small islands. We landed in Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, which is extremely modern compared with the other islands that we lived and worked on. After a couple of days, we moved on to the Island of Vanua-Lava and stayed in the village of Sola with my smaller team of nine, eight girls and poor Dave, the only guy! This island was also considered pretty modern by Vanuatu standards. They had two cars on the island and concrete! Vanuatu has 3 national languages, English, French and Bislama which is a pigeon English. As well as every island has their own native language. So some people were extremely easy to communicate with and some only spoke their island language so it was a bit harder. This island was where we spent the most time and built the most relationships with the islanders. (#9)We had our tents all set up and spent the first night in them, until it started to rain and the rain turned into a cyclone and a category 5 hurricane! With no radio or TV other than a satellite radio to communicate with the ship, we probably weren t as worried about this as we should have been. This was when we got to see for the first time just how kind and welcoming this culture is. (#10)The local pastor and his wife invited us to stay in their home where we slept on the floor and shared their cooking facilities. We spent our days
building relationships with the villagers, running kids programs, connecting with the youth who felt forgotten and providing medical care. The major medical focus for this island was working in the island hospital. This was a concrete building with a broken generator and therefore no electricity, hardly any medication because they could not afford it, staffed by one nurse and an eye doctor who had only a few pair of glasses to distribute. We were privileged to work alongside these two amazing people who provided medical care to the entire island. We provided them with basic medications and a couple hundred pair of eyeglasses. We provided wound care and physio. A doctor who had sailed to Port Vila with us was supposed to meet us here but was unable to get there because of the storm. There were many patients whose needs were more than we could meet, so we sat with them, prayed with them and trusted that Jesus would take over. (#11)I am so grateful that Vanuatu was the first country that I got to experience in missions. The people were completely evangelized into Christianity years ago and their faith is stronger than anything I have ever seen. They showed me how beautiful the outcome of sharing the gospel around the world is. The island mamas worship every morning at 5:00 a.m. in the markets before they open their stalls. The kids sang praises to Jesus on their walk to school and in the gardens. Absolutely nobody turned down prayer on the streets and people came up to us asking for it. I had countless opportunities to sit down and hear the villagers incredible stories of how God provided for them and healed miraculously. They have no material possessions to rely on so they rely on God.
The rest of our mission was serving as disaster relief on several other islands that had been devastated by the hurricane. (#12)We provided clean water and water filters. Now alongside doctors, we were able to provide almost complete medical services and many different medications, even though none of these islands had hospitals. One of the islands where we had the largest medical clinic of our trip. I was able to sit and talk with one of the mamas. As we were talking she just started to cry and she thanked God that He brought our group to the island where all their gardens were destroyed and they had hardly any food. All the children were getting sick because the storm made all the water dirty and undrinkable. The people of Vanuatu have so much faith and all they did through this disaster was pray and trust God. Those prayers were fulfilled and God provided. (#13)I want to finish off with one last story. Our favourite phrase in YWAM was flexible is our favourite F word. We planned to go to one island for a day but there was too much corral for our little tender boat to get to it so through chaos trying to find a plan for our day we ended up on a small island with no plan, no doctor and just a bucket of medical supplies but not really expecting to do any medical work.
We soon realized that what we thought was plans not working out was God s plan working. (#14)This island had no roads, no cars, no cement. It was sand paths that the locals would walk barefoot and houses made of only local material. Soon after stepping off the tender boat the chief of a village came to speak with us. Very excited to have a missionary team on his island he said follow me. We walked a couple of hours to the opposite side of the island and soon a flood of villagers came out needing medical attention because hardly any of these people have ever had the ability to see a doctor on one of the wealthier islands. We had one nurse on our team and the rest of us had little training. Claire our nurse stayed back on the ship because just that morning she received news that her grandma passed away. It was fine because we were not expecting to do any major medical work. (#15)Until a man named Levi came out. He had a large piece of cloth wrapped around his leg, he untapped it to reveal a wound that covered almost half of his shin, was extremely infected and a large area around it was dead skin. His wife who spoke a bit of English explained that around 5 years ago he cut his leg with a bush knife. Because of his unmanaged diabetes and no medical care it continued to spread and get increasingly infected. His wife also explained that he can hardly walk and because of the pain he can hardly sleep. It was clear he needed surgery but what can a few young adults with a 3 months training do. We prayed, my team felt that God was asking me to take the lead on this one. I asked 2 others to sit on each side of his and for a couple of hours before we did any medical care we prayed and just continued to pray for this man. I finally felt like God was telling me what to do. I started to clean out the wound and gently scraping away dead skin. We gave him a couple of pain killers but nothing close to what he needed. I
felt so bad thinking that it would be hurting pretty bad but every time I asked if it hurt too much he said no, not at all. He later said since you started praying the pain for the first time in those 5 years went away. We left him with a giant bag of medical supplied to keep it covered and clean. YWAM does medical trips to Vanuatu around 2 times a year and they are hoping for a doctor to be able to go back and give him the full medical attention Levi needs. I came out of that day with a full understanding that God does not call the qualified but qualifies the called. In September I started at Prairie Bible College getting a combined diploma in nursing and ministry. My desire is to go back into the mission field as soon as I'm finished school. Thank you Holy Nativity for walking alongside my journey. -Caitlin Bilton
