October 2014 B AY VIEW UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CONNECTION Newsletter O PEN H EARTS. O PEN M INDS. O PEN D OORS. TM Methoducks Are Called to Teach! Y all know that s my initial call and that I view most aspects of ministry through the lens of teaching. Now I invite you to view our shared ministry through this lens as we welcome a new pastoral intern to our community. Eddie Crise joined us officially on Sunday, September 14 th and I traveled to Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary on Thursday, September 25 th to participate in the seminary s chapel service blessing all of the field education students. Contents 2 Pastors Columns 3 Pastors Columns 4 News & Events 5 News & Events 6 Announcements 7 Children s Ministries 8 Ministry Spotlight 9 Down to Business 10 LSP & Birthdays 11 Calendar 12 Contact Info Eddie comes to us to learn about God s grace, to experience excellent worship leadership practices and to help lead us into our intentional living and being a reconciling congregation. You, the church family, have much to offer Eddie as you share your individual stories, your on-going faith journey and your collective work in the ministry we share in this place. Please watch for your chance to meet Eddie, up close and personal, this Fall Have You Noticed That Rack of Greeting Cards in Our Gathering Space? Continued on Page 2... Many of us walk right past it on Sunday morning without giving it a second thought. I know I do. That is exactly why I am taking time to tell you the rest of the story! For a good many years we have had a dedicated group of women meeting twice a month to rip, tear and otherwise recycle used greeting cards which are then offered for sale to us, the members of this church. And where do they get these old cards? From us! I will say that I dutifully save all my birthday and Christmas cards and when I have a stack, I bring them in and drop them in their In basket. If you don t already do that I would urge you to make it a habit in the future. Continued on Page 2...

Called to Teach... Continued from Page 1 and join me in adding Pastor Eddie to your daily prayers for safe travels (he is commuting weekly from Evanston, IL) and for a fun and fulfilling year of learning and growing among us. Please be sure to wear your name tags, friends, so that we can ALL welcome each other by name! And, if you see someone without a name tag, direct them to the hospitality credenza in the Gathering Space where Kirsten Decker, our hospitality person, can assist them! Peace to each of you, Greeting Cards... However, we are not the Card Ministry s best customers. Over the last several years they have been taking their cards on the road. Once a month they set up at a local senior living facility, such as Howard Village. And I have to tell you the residents there go wild for these cards! Many of them don t have the ready access to Walgreens, Hallmark or the Dollar Store that we enjoy. These cards provide a wonderful way for them to stay in touch with friends and relatives. And despite selling for only fifty cents apiece the profits add up! So what happens to the money this ministry brings in? That s the best part of this story. In each of the last two years these ladies have gifted nine different local mission organizations with over two thousand dollars that s a lot of cards, folks! This group meets in the library at 12:30pm on the 2 nd and 4 th Wednesdays of each month and they are always looking for new helpers. I realize meeting during the day might not be possible for some so they are also open to teaching anyone who wants to learn how to prepare cards at home. If you want to learn more about this wonderful ministry simply ask Jan Liebenstein, Linda Becker, Dorie Fortner, Susan Troyer, Hertha Kornkven, Kay Putney, Wendy Boedecker or Jean Larsen. Blessings, Pastor Kelly Pastor Andy Continued from Page 1 Stations of the Cards Learn how the card ladies do it! ALL are invited to learn how the recycled cards are made and how this ministry supports our church as it reaches out into the community. Join the fun on Tuesday, October 28 th at 6:30pm. Meet us in the Gathering Space. Check The Calendar It s a Great Resource for Information! Though the calendar in Connection only covers the current month, the calendar on our website lists dates and events much further in advance. Events are updated as information becomes available and includes location information, event details, maps and more. It s just what you need to plan your day! The website calendar is found at: bayviewumc.org/wordpress/calendar 2

Building Something Beautiful Together Hi Church, Thank you for welcoming me to Bay View UMC. I m excited to officially become a Methoduck and hope that our light can shine brightly together, just like my new glow-in-the-dark duck! I look forward to connecting with more of you as I learn about your passions and calling for the life of the church. In fact, connection is the word that keeps coming to my mind as I think about what gets me excited about this coming year. I will connect with you to learn what gifts and graces you bring and connect Bay View UMC to other churches in the community. I am excited to join this reconciling church and put into practice an inclusive welcome to ALL. Some of you may already know some basic things about me, that I grew up in the North Shore of Milwaukee and attend seminary at Garrett- Evangelical in Evanston, Illinois (Pastor Kelly s alma mater!), but do you know some of these fun facts that make me Eddie? I am a big Packers, Brewers, and Bucks fan. I m always willing to talk sports and bond over Wisconsin s pro teams. My favorite season is fall and I love to go on runs as the seasons change. This summer I got engaged to my lovely fiancée, Katie, and we will get married next June! Katie is currently student teaching and will graduate from UW-Eau Claire in December with degrees in Elementary and Special Education. I love puns and corny jokes. I studied Spanish at the University of Iowa and want to connect Bay View UMC with one of the Spanish-speaking ministries in Milwaukee. My cooking specialty is fudge and I plan to make lots of it for the cookie walk! Let s get together and continue to talk about our lives, our passions, and what God is stirring up in our hearts. Let s deepen the connections we have as a community of faith and widen the welcome as we open the doors of the church. Thank you to all of you proud Methoducks and let us serve God together in exciting ways. In Peace, Pastor Eddie Are You Itching to Be Up Front?! Reading scripture aloud and leading congregational worship are gifts to the church that require training and practice. These lay servant volunteer rolls enhance our experience of worship and bring vitality to the written words we hold each Sunday. Pastors invite those interested in this area of ministry to attend a one hour orientation training in liturgical leadership on Sunday, October 5 th from 12:00pm to 1:00pm in the main level Sanctuary. 3

Here s an Easy Way to Make a Huge Difference! The July issue of M magazine featured an article about long-time friends of our congregation, Marty & Elaine Schreiber, and their personal journey with Alzheimer s. Elaine was diagnosed seven years ago and Marty has been her primary care partner. Alongside their story was a sidebar article detailing the work of the Alzheimer s Association and their offering of Memory Cafes. The Alzheimer s Association describes a Memory Café as an opportunity for individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), Alzheimer s and related dementias, and their care partners and family members to come together in a safe, supportive, and engaging environment. It is a time and place to share stories, laugh, cry, share concerns and celebrate without feeling embarrassed or misunderstood. Creating a place where we enjoy each other, and not focus on the disease. Recently Pastor Kelly and I met with Wendy Betley from the Alzheimer s Association about the possibility of having our church host a Memory Café. She was delighted with our offer as they currently have nothing on the south side of Milwaukee. A Memory Café is offered once a month and is 1-1/2 to 2 hours in length. What we need are a couple of people who would act as hosts. Their job would be to set up and clean up (preparing coffee, tea or water), welcoming new and regular attendees, hand out name tags, point people to rest rooms, etc. The group would most likely meet on a weekday, probably in the morning. I m sure all of us know someone who has been touched by Alzheimer s and this sounds like a great way for our church to provide a little respite for couples affected by this. If you think this is something you would like to help with please let me or Pastor Kelly know. There is a training event coming up on Tuesday, October 21 st from 9:00am to noon at the Alzheimer s Association office, 620 S. 76 th St., #160. I am planning on attending. Pastor Andy Election Workers Needed Do you support fair, transparent and accurate elections? If so, the City of Milwaukee Election Commission needs your help. We are hiring election workers for the General Election on November 4 th. Earn a little extra money, work at a site close to home and serve as a role model of civic responsibility to your friends, family, and neighbors. Please feel free to contact Dan Puhek, Election Worker Coordinator, or at dpuhek@ milwaukee.gov. For additional information, please visit For those you know who could handle the long day and be supportive of fair and accurate elections, we are particularly looking for bilingual folks, but not only bilingual folks. There is good info here and an application form: city.milwaukee.gov/helpmilwaukeevote#chiefinspector Are You Interested in Lay Service? We continue to offer Basic Lay Servant education at Cudahy United Methodist Church. The class consists of 4 units taken on Sundays from 2-5pm. The first class, offered the first Sunday of each month, must be taken first and the other 3 sessions can be taken in any order. Please register at nowenhoekman@gmail.com. Include your name, , phone, home church, and the month you wish to start the class. Further information will be sent to you with the registration confirmation. 4

Football Tailgate - Church Style Join in the fun at our Gathering Space tailgate as we cheer on the Green Bay Packers who will play at home vs against the Carolina Panthers on October 19 th. Sign up to bring your favorite tailgate food item to share with other football enthusiasts! (Please sign up even if you don t bring food just so we have a head count.) The game begins at noon. Bring your Bay View UMC folding chair if you d like. You can even wear your football watchin attire to church! This is an alcohol free tailgate and is open to ALL (even non-packer fans!). This is a great fellowship opportunity with no strings attached! Divine Intervention Host Orientation Please be sure your fall calendars are marked for Sunday, November 2 nd for our Divine Intervention Host Orientation, 1:30pm to 3pm-ish at Tippecanoe Presbyterian Church! Spread the word in your community and bring someone with you whom you feel would be enriched by this opportunity to serve! And enjoy this summer! In gratitude, Pastor Karen - Tippecanoe Presbyterian Church Youth Join Together for Mission and Fun Bay View UMC has begun to partner with two local churches to imagine what it can mean to come together ecumenically for a youth group. We are partnering with Tippecanoe Presbyterian Church and Christ Church Bay View, a church in the UCC denomination. Ice cream was enjoyed for the first meeting and we got to know each other through ridiculous rap performances. Youth from all three churches shared ideas about coming together for fun, fellowship, and to do local mission together. They are creative minded and have a passion for making change in their own backyard. If you are interested in helping to lead youth in a new endeavor that is both fun and mission-minded contact Pastor Eddie at pastoreddie@bayviewumc.org World Communion Sunday - October 5 th Our church is at its best when we reach out to sisters and brothers in need. World Communion Sunday calls the church to reach out to all people and model diversity among God s children. United Methodists relate to World Communion Sunday by celebrating communion with other Christians around the world on this special Sunday. Churches are also encouraged to receive an offering to support ethnic undergraduate and graduate students, which often enables first-generation students to attend college. Daylight Saving Time Ends! Sunday, November 2 nd 2am Set your clock back one hour. Enjoy an extra hour of sleep! 5

PEP October Outing Holy Hill and Fall Splendor will be our event for People Enjoying People for October 11 th. Bob and Kitty Schaefer will host the drive to Holy Hill and then lunch at Sloppy Joes. We will carpool from church leaving at 9:30am. The Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary Help is in Hubertus, about an hour drive from Milwaukee. Those strong people may want to climb the 178 steps of the tower for a great view. The drive will hopefully have some fall color. Sloppy Joes is a small pub with great sandwiches. Sign up on The Cube and indicate if you are willing to drive. First Men's Breakfast a Great Success! Twelve of us gathered for food and fellowship and everyone enjoyed the time so much that we decided to do it again! Our next gathering will be Thursday, October 30 th at 9:00am, again at Castillo's Restaurant, 5656 S. Packard Ave. See Pastor Andy if you need a ride. First Sunday Forums Opportunities for you to learn about all types of Missions and how your apportionment dollars are at work. Beginning the first Sunday in October from 9:15am to 10:15am we will have a speaker who is or has been involved with a mission outreach either locally or in another part of the world. The forums will take place in the Sanctuary. October 5 th : Aurelia Schultz will tell of some of her experiences in Zambia November 2 nd : A staff person from Northcott Neighborhood House will speak about their programs and the people they serve December 7 th : Deanna Schimko from Caldwell UMC will describe work she has led in building wells in Southeast Asia. Fascinating information awaits your learning and presence. We hope you will be there! October Forum - Aurelia Schultz Hi, I'm Aurelia. You may see me from time to time in the pew with my family during second service, competing with my mom, sister and Kristen Decker for most fun shoes. The Mission Team is beginning a new series on the first Sunday of each month. On Sunday, October 5 th, I'll be presenting a conversation about my time in Zambia with the Peace Corps and the importance of understanding a community before you try to "help" the people in it. Come join in the fun. Aurelia 6

Sunday School is underway! Thanks be to God!! Pastor Kelly Gratitude and kudos to Miss Debbie Bernal and Judie Liebenstein for getting our Sunday School up and running this Fall. We are happy to have 3 classes to start the year based on our census of attending children so far: Age 3-First Grade Miss Debbie, Wendy Boedecker and Jan Kosanke Grade 2-Grade 7 Al Eckoldt and April Dillon Grade 8-Grade 12 Hannah Brilow and Diane Balfanz Goals for Sunday School: Our first goal is to welcome ALL children with love and respect. Our second goal is to model words and actions that mirror the love of God to ALL families. Our curriculum, called Spark focuses on a lectionary based Bible Story each week. Our third goal is to convey Bible stories in easy, fun, memorable ways through classroom experience so that children will repeat these stories easily and joyfully at home. Our last goal is to allow the entire church family to see and interact with the children throughout the Sunday School year. The final and very important piece of the Sunday School experience for our families involves the nursery programming. The curriculum for Age 0-36 mos. Splash is here and ready to use and we re prayerful that as soon as the second staff person is in place that our youngest children will soon be experiencing God s love through music, movement and story. The Secret Angel Gift Shop is Coming to Bay View UMC! Saturday, December 6 th is shopping day for ALL of our young ones! Family and friends, neighbors and co-workers are encouraged to make shopping appointments and to prepare one of the ½ sheet shopping lists with their shoppers, ages Our shopping angels will assist each shopper with their selections, payment and gift wrapping. 8 Ministry Spotlight: Loving Start Preschool:!! by Katy Meyer An Extension of Bayview United Methodist Church Offering a half day preschool experience especially for 3 and 4 years olds. Some may start when they are almost 3 or leave after they turn 5. Parents may choose how many days per week is right for their child with mornings available M-F and afternoon class on Tuesday and Thursday. This month I interviewed Lucy Meyer, K4 student at Loving Start Preschool: Mom: Lucy, what room are you in? Lucy: Butterfly room! M: Why is it called butterfly room? L: Because it has butterflies all over the room! M: What is new about your school this year? L: Teddy Bear Picnic! M: What's your favorite thing to do at school? L: Paint! (Noteworthy: The kids now get to paint on easels in the new Art Studio... check it out downstairs.) M: What's your favorite thing to do in the climber room? L: Ride the bikes! M: What are your teachers like? L: KIDS!! (We shall give the teachers the benefit of the doubt and assume Lucy understood the question as "What do your teachers like?" :) Although the great thing about LSP teachers is that they are like kids with their sense of wonder, discovery and playfulness. M: What does your mom like about your preschool? L: Mom! What do you like about my preschool? M: I love the developmental approach to learning with hands on sensory activities, social skills through play, a positive first leaning experience, the super cool parent-child nights (like Fairy Tale night and Outerspace night), community field trips (like Outpost, Classic Slice and Milwaukee Fire Department), affordable tuition (5% discount for BVUMC members), and the kind, empathetic teachers. Oh, and of course, the delicious cookie dough that LSP kids sell every November :) Fall Apportionment Update At this point we are on track to pay 100% of our apportionment for 2014! Thanks to all who pledged toward it, those who gave special gifts above and beyond, those who are paying as you are able all year long and also to those who will yet give in Our faithfulness, together, highlights God s abundance for ALL! Whether you are in plenty or in want, money has a direct connection to your stress level, your anxiety, and the health of your relationships. It is no wonder, then, that Jesus talked about the relationship between our treasure and our hearts. For a 3 week period October 12 th, we will look at the many ways that our treasure (time, energy, money) affects our spiritual and emotional lives. Join us in worship as we begin the new sermon series called Treasure. We will explore Matthew 6 and Jesus teachings on money, giving, worry, and more. At the end of the 3 weeks, we will have an opportunity to make personal commitments of our offerings to God through our church in the coming year. We will receive commitment cards in the mail, and cards will be available on Sunday mornings. We will bring these commitment cards to worship on Sunday, November 2 nd. I hope that you ll join us in the coming weeks as we look at Jesus teaching on how we can avoid freedom from some of the common pitfalls related to money, and how we can give our lives and our treasure to God.!!!!!!!!
