1 Lenten Mid-Week Bible Study Wednesdays February 21 March 28, 2018 at 10:00 am Jesus The New Way by N.T. Wright It s not too late to join us 4 Classes still remaining 1. Longing for a King: In Jewish world weird for the welcome and recognition of a Messiah, how did Jesus redefine what that should mean? What were the implications for the main symbols of Israel s life such as the Holy Temple? 2. Why did Jesus die?: What were the charges? What was the real and great battle being fought? How was history racing toward its climatic moment, and how did Jesus understand and undertake his role therein? 3. Who was Jesus?: How do we begin to understand the meaning of Jesus by reexamining what we really mean by God? How did Jesus understand himself? How did the early church view Jesus? Was Jesus divine? 4. The New Claim: Was Jesus really raised from the dead? What about all the skeptics explanations as to why that is impossible? What did resurrection mean to first century Jews? How does the resurrection of Jesus address our individual lives? All you need for a compelling journey into the life, words and world of Jesus and what they mean for our world today. We are in need of volunteers for the following on Maundy Thursday, March 29th 7 pm service Greeters and for our Easter Sunday, April 1st 10 am service Greeters, Lay Reader, Announcements and Coffee Clean Up. 2 Order of Worship March 4, 2018 GATHERING MUSIC GREETING, ANNOUNCEMENTS, AND RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP [Visitors: Please print your name, address and/or phone number.] PRELUDE Jayne Luebke *CALL TO WORSHIP Pastor: The heavens are telling the glory of God. The firmament proclaims God s handiwork. People: We celebrate the steadfast love of God, our Creator. Surely God is faithful to all who live in covenant. Pastor: From the sun s rising to its setting, the creation speaks. Day and night, earth s creatures announce God s works. People: The commandments of God are clear, enlightening the eyes. God s law is perfect, calling forth our best. Pastor: God s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom. God s weakness is stronger than human strength. All: The ordinances of God are true and righteous. In following them, we gain wisdom and strength. *HYMN OF PRAISE O Worship the King #104 *MORNING PRAYER (unison) (10:00 am only) All-wise and all-loving God, we are drawn together in this place because all our knowledge and discernment is not enough to give meaning to our lives. All the pieces of our busy days need a center, and we have come to see that center in the foolishness of the cross. There, Love went the distance for us. There, the paths of service were lifted up above our passion for personal gain. We are fightened by what you might ask of us, but we long for the wholeness only you can offer. Let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable to you, O Lord, our rock and our redeemer. Amen. *GLORIA PATRI (10:00 am only) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. HYMN OF PREPARATION (10:00 am only) Jesus Lover of My Soul #710 PASTORAL PRAYER THE LORD S PRAYER (unison) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory forever. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Daniel 4:1-13 ANTHEM (10:00 am only) SCRIPTURAL REFLECTION- (Part 3 of 6 part series) OFFERTORY (10:00 am only) Joshua Fit The Battle Abundant Living *DOXOLOGY (unison) (10:00 am only) Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
