Why does the date wobble around the calendar so? The way of calculating the date was set by the Emperor Constantine in 325. The decision ended a very bitter controversy in the church. Some people wanted to synchronize the Pasch with Passover on the fourteenth day of the Jewish month Nissan, and their opponents wanted it after the Passover was complete, on the Sunday after the first full moon of springtime. The ecclesiastical rules do not exactly connect with the astronomical rules. The emperor squashed the hopes of the quartodecimans, as the fans of 14 Nissan were called, and chose Sunday. The traditional rule is that Easter is the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon that occurs on or after the vernal equinox, the fourteenth day of the new moon, and later than March 21. Thus, Easter wobbles between March 22 and April 25. The actual tables and methods for computing the date are extraordinarily detailed, with subtle variations and mindbending exceptions and charts with golden numbers, dominical letters, and epacts measuring leap years. In 1954 and 1962 the ecclesiastical calculations actually overrode the astronomical new moons and bumped Easter back a month! Today, there is a movement in the World Council of Churches (Protestants and Orthodox) for all Christians to combine their celebrations, based on the star charts for the Jerusalem skies. In principle, the Catholic Church is open to an ecumenical agreement on a fixed date for Easter, but we desire a unanimous decision from the World Council. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Registration will be at 6:30pm - 7:00pm. Guest speakers will be Joyce Rondorf and Connie Bushman who will share their experiences during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. A reception/social time will be hosted by the ladies of the Thorp Deanery Council of Catholic Women following the closing of the assembly. An open invitation is extended to all ladies, men, children, family members and friends to attend and join in this event. DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY - April 23rd and will begin at Holy Rosary with an 8:00am mass. Adoration will begin after mass with benediction at 12:00pm (noon). Refreshments will follow in Marian Hall. Saturday, May 20, We will leave St Mary s parking lot at 7:30am and return about 5:30pm. The cost will be $25.00 per person. Lunch will be on your own. There are picnic tables available for you to bring a sack lunch, and they also have a café on the grounds. You can site-see at your leisure golf carts are available for those who cannot walk the path to the Shrine Church. We have seats available on the bus and would like to invite parishioners from your parishes to travel with us. The menu will consist of deep fried or baked haddock, deep fried shrimp, jo-jo potatoes, buttered parsley potatoes, vegetable, coleslaw, dessert, coffee, milk & water. 1 piece fish dinner - $7.50, 2 piece fish dinner - $9.50, 3 piece fish dinner - $ This will be the pricing for dining in or takeouts. 6 A Very Special TCS Visitor This past week, Father Al Jakubowski requested a visit with the students and staff at TCS. He has been a beloved visitor to our school since his days as our parish priest and our students fondly remember the times he spent in the classroom with them. Even after he left Thorp and Owen, he stopped here each school year to say Hi and bring his little gifts for all. We are so honored that he came to personally share his message of faith as he goes through this time in his life. His message was very touching, but also so uplifting. He always makes us smile and we are blessed to know and love him. We especially thank Father Tim Oudenhoven for his amazing care of Father Al and for bringing him to us!
