There s some evidence for eucharistic towers also, but often these were in an obscure corner of the church, or even in the off-limits sacristy. Many of us grew up making visits to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, but it s clear this would raise some medieval eyebrows in confusion! To the present day, the Eucharist is always reserved only in a side chapel in many cathedrals. The principal focus in a cathedral is always on the altar, symbol of Christ, and on the cathedra, symbol of the pastoral ministry of the bishop. In your parish church there is probably a sanctuary lamp, a permanently lit candle or oil lamp indicating the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. Sometimes it s in a red glass, not for any particular reason except that it s easy to find. There is a story of a bishop missioned to Papua New Guinea who was distressed to find no sanctuary lamps burning in his new diocese. The people patiently explained that their churches were woven of grass, and that they decided to place a chief s standard, a trident, in front of the tabernacle. That was a sign in their culture that the chief was at home, like raising the flag over Buckingham Palace. The bishop, an Irish import, didn t appreciate the British reference, so he ordered the candles back. 3 COMMUNITY NEWS THORP DEANERY COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN Spring General Assembly is Thursday, April 20, 2017 at St Anthony Catholic Church, 407 N Division Street Loyal. Registration will be at 6:30pm - 7:00pm. Guest speakers will be Joyce Rondorf and Connie Bushman who will share their experiences during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. A reception/social time will be hosted by the ladies of the Thorp Deanery Council of Catholic Women following the closing of the assembly. An open invitation is extended to all ladies, men, children, family members and friends to attend and join in this event. 20 GUN RAFFLE CALENDAR - Tickets are available after all masses. We have new goals set for after the new roof is on - to work on inside repairs and painting. God Bless You Elaine!! DCCW ANNUAL COLLECTION...The Diocesan Council of Catholic Women Annual Collection will be the weekend of April 22th and 23th. This collection, will be taken up the weekend after Easter by the parish women. Proceeds are used for spirituality days, education, conventions, workshops, leadership training, support and charitable works throughout the Diocese. At the 10:00am mass the Youth will sit up front, do the readings, collection & offertory. Next Youth s mass is April 9, $CRIP SCRIP INCOME: January total sales: $ January total profit: $ Average profit = 3.4% Of the January total profit, $ went into the general church fund with the remaining $65.37 going toward tuition assistance. February total sales: $ February total profit: $ Average profit = 3.1% Of the February total profit, $ went into the general church fund with the remaining $21.80 going toward tuition assistance. As you can see, buying gift cards through our scrip program is an easy fundraiser for our parish. In just two months we made almost $550 just from selling gift cards. If we could get 10 new people to start using it, we could easily make that $1000. Please consider trying it out! There are about 20 different gift cards in our stock for places that everyone buys things from regularly such as gas, groceries and restaurants. It is just like buying a gift card from any other place. They work as all gift cards work. You pay the face value of the card and you spend the same amount you paid. The beauty of it is, the scrip program buys it at a discounted rate so our parish is able to make money simply by selling them. If you have any questions, please stop at the rectory during the week or at the scrip table after mass. WORLD YOUTH DAY WORLD YOUTH DAY - is selling Pierogi.
