Matt was born at Hoag Hospital and has lived his whole life in Orange County, mainly in the Rancho Santa Margarita area. He played soccer in High School and, after graduating, went to work at Trader Joe s. He worked there for four years and also began as an intern for the youth at PCOM. He loved working at Trader Joe s but knew that his calling was to work with youth in any capacity. His grandmother, Ruth Bernhardt, has been a driving force in his life. Both of Matt s parents were working full time and when Ruth got divorced, she chose to come and live closer to Matt s family so she could help out with the job of raising the children. She would always take them to their games, school events and anything that would happen when his parents would not be able to go. He remembers his grandmother bringing him to Sunday School in 1st grade and sitting next to him in the class so he would not be a problem. Matt has always been a big guy and was always the biggest kid in the class. Because he did not always fit in, he would act out and try to get attention. Ruth knew that, and worked with him on staying focused. These early struggles and the help he received gave Matt both a love for youth and an ability to connect with them in what they face. He has two brothers, one who going to be attending Northern Arizona University and one in the youth program. He also has sister who is teaching at Serra Catholic High School. His father helps out with the program by driving at events and lending his great advice. His mother unfortunately passed away last year at the age of 53. When in high school, Matt had some bad grades so he chose to continue school but took the very minimum he had to so he could graduate. Right now he is taking college classes, on and off, with the goal of becoming an art teacher and working with high schoolers. This dream is a way off as he just loves what he is doing now as Director of Youth at PCOM. Matt does not sit in an office and expect people to come to him. He feels his mission for Christ is to be in the community and meet the kids where they are. He has been coaching girls soccer at Trabuco Hills High School and, right now, has a couple girls from the team attending the program and even one volunteering with him at PCOM in the Junior High. Acts 17: is Matt s favorite story in the Bible and has flavored his ministry with the youth group. It is when Paul was in Athens, going through the marketplace, he noticed a city full of idols. He centered his message on his discovery of an idol to an unknown god, and used it to proclaim to them the good news of the one and only true God. Matt meets the students where they are and is able to proclaim the Good News out of their own experience. Matt and some of the youth group can be seen at football games, at all of the high school s musical events, plays, and anything in which some member of the youth group is participating. There are so many activities that are offered PCOM for the Junior High school students and High School students. The groups meet weekly at 10:45 for church in the Awake service. During the summer they meet at various houses for a pool party called Splash. Forest Home is one of the greatest gift these students can attend along with Ride, a winter ski retreat in Utah. Junior High has a winter camp at Forest Home and a trip called No Flake which is a local discipleship outing. Two years ago there were 11 who attended Forest Home in the summer and this summer there are 28 going to camp. Those trips also go along with both of the Mission Trips the High School and Junior High students take. High School partners with APU at Mexicali Outreach and Junior High puts on their own trip to San Diego. We are so very fortunate to have a wonderful leader of our youth. He truly loves each and every one of them and knows that PCOM is only the building from which he works. His ministry is out in the community proclaiming that Jesus is our Savior. -2-

That s right we are looking for new and excited people to join us and help out this year. Let me tell you, it is fun to get involved with this event. We have many small and large jobs to choose from. It is a great way to get connected with other women as we plan this special event for the women of the church and community. Our next meeting will be held at PCOM on Monday night August 7th at 7pm. Please call Kelly Kroeger or Kristy Vetter to get connected (numbers below). Coming in October we have our Women s Forest Home Retreat on October This is a wonderful weekend get-a-way to the local mountains for spiritual fuel and fun. Please tell your kids, husband, roommate, dog, etc. that you will be out of town on that date and get it inked in ASAP. You can also tell your female friends and neighbors about the retreat and sign up to attend. Kristy and I have attended each year and love this sleep away retreat! Get ready, this fall we are planning another women s Bunko night where we can all roll the dice, meet new and old friends, and win prizes. Also Pastor Dee Lilly is going to host another movie night featuring The Case for Christ, the 2017 film about an investigative editor who uses his journalistic and legal training to try and disprove the claims of Christianity, pitting his resolute atheism against her growing faith. Guess who wins? If you would like to get involved with Women s ministries, we invite you to join our Women s Ministries Committee. We have a meeting the first Monday of the month (Sept-June) where we plan out events for the women of our church. We re always looking for new people to join our dedicated group of gals. You can call Kelly (949) or Kristy (949) for more info. Get involved. We re fun. Kelly Kroeger & Kristy Vetter Women s Ministries Co-Moderators -4- Library News In August the Church Library Bookcart will feature more stories of people from the O.T. and also stories of modern day Christians who have made a difference in their lives. Friendship was a theme discussed in a recent sermon (David and Jonathan from the Book of Samuel) and Pastor Daryl went on to say that our friendship with God and our fellow Christians was so important too. Look on the Bookcart for stories about Solomon, Elijah, and Esther in the O.T. plus more recent tales about love of country (America and South Africa), and some inspirational people in fiction. The book list is in print on top of the Bookcart, and on the church web site at: A new donated CD of Dr. Lloyd Ogilvie s talk is also available, Adventures in Faith: Reigniting Your Passion for Life; Receiving Fresh Faith; and Restoring Your Courage. Thanks to Barbara Bean for the CD. The Book cart is on the church patio on Sundays, and in the Admin. Bldg lobby during the week. The main library shelves are located in the Young Adult Services area (ask at the desk for directions). Information: Pril Kirkeby, pwkirkeby@ cox.net or Music Ministry While the choir is on vacation for the summer, we are busy making musical plans for the Fall and Christmas! Did you know that most church music directors spend most of their summer time planning Christmas music? Our 2016 Christmas program was a memorable event and we plan to keep the excitement going. New arrangements are being composed as this article is being written. One of our new projects is making Christian music available to our congregation as well as our community. Please visit our music ministry table on the patio in between our Sunday worship services. I have just released three new piano CDs for your enjoyment. The proceeds benefit our music event expenses. Gene Roberson Director of Worship and Music
5 Children s Ministries At the 4th of July Street Faire, our PCOM family was indeed: Learn Walking with Jesus (and we all took our turn sweating!) Serving in love (how MANY faces did we paint?) Sharing with courage (yes, we are the church on the corner of Oso & Marguerite) And your kids are coming to VBS next week? Oh, your kids attended our preschool? So did mine! And you re here from Wisconsin, looking for a Presbyterian church just for the summer while you are interning? (Can I tell you about our wonderful pastors from Wisconsin?) Lots of fun conversations all over our booth as once again, PCOM was a highlight for many families with our free tattoos and very original face painting designs! The best part was working together to spread some smiles in the name of Jesus. Can I hear an AMEN! -5-

7 Moment For Missions Pat Minnesang (Missions Elder) The Missions Committee is dedicated and committed to working with our local and international partners. For the next few months, we will focus on our service and commitment to local ministries in our community and close-by neighborhoods where each of us can form connections with mission partners we feel called to serve. An experience to volunteer or participate such as this can provide an individual opportunity to create an impact in our community to influence others and transform the people we meet. We encourage everyone to serve where God is leading. It has become a true spiritual experience of God in the local San Bernardino Mountains. Thousands of people of all ages encounter Jesus by exploring His Word in the Gospel, experience a personal life transformation by renewing their faith, by deepening and strengthening friendships and where special memories are made by connecting with God through the beauty of His creation. Forest Home also offers specially designed retreats for active duty singles, couples and families conducted by Chaplains. This program provides the needed time for family, for relaxation, for spiritual growth and for healing of mind and body. Forest Home programs are funded by organizations and donors such as PCOM. Forest Home has been a long-standing partner with PCOM. Our annual contribution to Forest Home of $10,000 assists with the renovation the buildings and grounds and is used to grow ministry and programs. Work groups of men and women from PCOM often spend volunteer days cleaning up, repairing buildings and preparing the property for new construction. The spiritual rewards gained by our members far exceed their commitment and their gifts and talents given freely and generously. You teach a little by what you say, you teach most by what you are. Session Notes Session met for its regular meeting on Tuesday, July 18, at 6:45 PM. We opened the meeting with prayer and reflection on 1 Corinthians 1:26-28 We received an update from our joint solution team (JST) who have been working on PCOM s dismissal process. They have an updated document that spells out the agreement between themselves and their Presbytery counterparts. After all members of the JST sign this document it will, once again, be vetted by the Presbytery Council, who should set a date for the Presbytery to read, debate, and vote on it. If the vote to dismiss PCOM to ECO is sustained by Presbytery, it will come back to PCOM for a congregational vote. There would still be the possibility for appeal at the presbytery level. All agree this has been an uphill climb. We discussed the fund that was created to enable pastors (both current and future) to gain suitable housing through a shared equity agreement. This will greatly help the Ellis as they enter escrow on their first home. We remain financially ahead of our budget, which is encouraging. There are a number of maintenance projects happening this summer: - Repairing and slurry coating the parking lot - Replacement of the red back flow valve along Marguerite - Replacement of beams in the Christian Education Building walkway The search committee for Julie Erban s replacement as Children s Ministry Director has started its work. They have received a number of applications. Initial interviews are scheduled over the next couple of weeks. -7-
