THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY First Sunday in Lent March 5, 2017 * = All who are able are invited to stand Bold type invites reading or singing by the congregation Italic type invites silent reading by the congregation THE CHIMES CALL US TO WORSHIP GATHERING PRELUDE Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven Arr. John Behnke Please quietly prepare for worship during the prelude by reading Genesis 1:1-3 in the Pew Bible Page 1 OT. It is written below for your convenience. In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, Let there be light ; and there was light. [NRSV] Welcome The Life of the Church (Announcements) Rite of Welcome If you have already greeted the people around you, please move from your seat and share the peace with people in other parts of the Sanctuary. OPENING HYMN #32 I Sing the Mighty Power of God CALL TO WORSHIP Worship Christ, Eternal Son of God; honor Christ, Incarnate Son of Mary; serve Christ, Glorious Ruler of creation; for to Christ belong the power and the glory of the Almighty. Praise be to God. HYMN #627 PRAYER OF THE DAY BREATH PRAYER I Love You, Lord CALL TO CONFESSION From: Colossians 1:
PRAYER OF CONFESSION Holy God, we confess that we have neglected to declare Jesus the king and model for our lives. We have been quick to call on others to follow the ways of Christ yet slow to do the same. We have been bold in demanding generosity, mercy, and forgiveness yet quiet when it comes to offering inclusion, love, and compassion. Forgive us, O God. Restore in us, yet again, the commitment to be more Christlike in word, in deed, and in spirit. Moment for Silent Confession ASSURANCE OF GOD S FORGIVENESS From: Colossians 1:20 *Responding with Song #437 You Are the Lord, Giver of Mercy! LISTENING TO THE WORD CHILDREN S TIME Jesus Loves The Little Children Jesus loves the little children, All the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white, They are precious in His sight-- Jesus loves the little children of the world. Jesus Loves The Little Children, words and music by George F. Root, Public Domain MISSION MOMENT PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION From: Colossians 1:12 13 GOSPEL John 1:1-4 Pew Bible Page 91 NT In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. [NRSV] EPISTLE Colossians 1:11-20 Pew Bible Page 200 NT May you be made strong with all the strength 4 that comes from his glorious
power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. [NRSV] The Word of The Lord! Thanks be to God. THE MORNING MESSAGE Creators Create HYMN #24 PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE RESPONDING TO GOD God, Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens *HYMN #517 Here, O Our Lord, We See You Verses 1 & 2 THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER Invitation Dear friends, we are going to Jerusalem with Jesus. He is our pardon, our healing, and our peace! We will suffer the trial with him, resisting evil. With him, we will walk the path to life. But come first to the table where there is food for the journey. With hearts full of joy we come, giving thanks to God, our maker, and offering our praise! Prayer of Thanksgiving We are right to praise you, faithful God as with angels and saints we sing: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. 5
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord Now, O God, we remember Jesus. A Moment of Silence He fasted and prayed; he was tempted and tried. He relied on you for everything. He was obedient to you and scorned by the powers of this world. He confounded the haughty and gave hope to the humble. He was betrayed and deserted. He died between thieves and was buried in a borrowed grave. You gave him new life. He lives even now, our healer and friend. He loved us well, loved us to the end, and loves us still. Even on the night of betrayal, he ate supper with his friends. He took bread...,... We pray this in the name of Jesus, who taught us to say: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. The Bread and the Cup When serving your neighbor bread, please say, The Bread of Heaven. (As you receive your bread, please hold it so we can all commune at the same time.) When Passing the cup, please say, The Cup of the New Covenant. (As you receive your cup, please hold it so we can all commune at the same time.) Prayer after Communion Let us give thanks! Thank you, merciful God, for gladness in this bread and cup, for love that cannot die, for peace the world cannot give, for joy in the company of friends, for the splendors of creation, and for the mission of justice you have made our own. Give us the gifts of this holy communion oneness of heart, love for neighbors, forgiveness of enemies, the will to serve you every day, and life that never ends. In Jesus name we pray. 6
HYMN #517 Here, O Our Lord, We See You Verse 4 Too soon we rise; the symbols disappear. The feast, though not the love, is past and gone; the bread and wine remove, but you are here, nearer than ever, still our shield and sun. Here, O Our Lord, We See You, Words by Horatius Bonar, 1991 Shepherd's Heard Music, Inc. (admin. PraiseCharts.com), used by permission GOING FORTH TO SERVE INVITATION BLESSING From: Colossians 1:15 HYMN #166 Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days Verses 1 & 3 WORDS OF DISMISSAL Go out into the world with courage, supporting the ways God gives light to those who sit in darkness and guides our feet in the way of peace. Thanks be to God. POSTLUDE Quote "You cannot be proud and expect to be transformed away from your sins. You need to humble yourself and have a spirit of repentance within you. Then you will see real change." Mable Vine QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION Paul declares that peace was made through the blood of the cross (Col. 1:20). How do we think about the inherent violence in the crucifixion? Is there a way to reconcile the call to be peacemakers with this statement that peace comes through the blood of the cross? HOUSEHOLD PRAYERS FOR THIS WEEK Morning: Lord Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom and enable me to live today for the attainment of paradise, that as far as I am able I may be a sign of God s kingdom. Amen. 7
Evening: Lord Jesus, if I have not honored you with all my heart, forgive me. If I have offended out of ignorance, pardon me. Let me sleep in peace and rise with a renewed dedication to serve you. Amen. Ministries Nursery - Jeff & DeeDee Means Elder Greeters - John Solberg, Margie Gumowski Liturgist - John Haynes Ministers - Every Member of Our Congregation Pastor - Richard W.
