From your Pastor Andrew Gale At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens. 27 The words once more indicate the removing of what can be shaken that is, created things so that what cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our God is a consuming fire. Hebrews 12:26-29 I wrote this article in a week when Donald Trump has won the American Presidential Election. This was a shocking result, confounding political operators, commentators and pollsters. In the same way, earlier this year, the result of our own referendum shook the nation and the EU. What do we make of these results? Some conclude that God s will has been done, that for purposes of His own God has appointed this result. If that is your view let me warn you against being complacent, it is possible that God s will is to bring judgement on a people through this leader or result. It is not always God s will to bless a nation, sometimes He brings down the mighty. The last few unfaithful and ineffective kings of Judah before the exile are an example of rulers appointed to bring down a nation. Some conclude that election results are an expression of humankind s freewill and the ability to choose rebellion against God s will. An example of this is the time when the people of Israel rejected God s rule through His appointed judges and demanded a king. You will have your own opinion on recent votes, whether the results have been a sign of God s blessing and guidance or part of His plan to judge a nation. Whether people have decided to honour God or reject His purposes. Only time will tell us which view is correct and we may have to wait until our eyes are open at the end of time for a full understanding of God s purposes. As we end 2016, in many ways a year of shocks and shaking, what is our confidence to take into the future? How will we cope with uncertainty and fear? We can only say this that the world has been through times of change before, when everything has been shaken, the Church of God marches on. Circumstances change, good times turn bad, bad times turn good but the Lord is always with us. I don t know what the future holds, and God doesn t choose to reveal to us the next steps of our journey, but I know in whom I have believed and am persuaded, that he is able, to keep that which I ve committed to Him until the end of time. 3

At a time when everything is being shaken we belong to a Kingdom which cannot be shaken. So be it Lord; Thy throne shall never Like earth proud empires pass away Thy kingdom stands, and grows forever, Till all Thy creatures own Thy sway. In His grip, Andrew As you know I have been a few months ago I was given a set of books dating from 1884 until 1890, each book contains that years Lantern magazines bound together to form an annual. Each month I have been copying an article for our magazine. I was surprised this month when I turned to the December magazine of 1884 to discover that there was no Christmas article. It took me a little time to realise that while Christmas now dominates almost all the last quarter of the year, in Victorian times this was not so. In fact, at the beginning of the Victorian era, it was hardly observed at all, except by the Church. Nonconformists, like Baptists, many refusing to even mark the day, this was a leftover of our Puritan roots. Our celebration of Christmas and Advent are a sign of learning from other traditions, as Baptist observed and mixed with Christians from other churches we came to recognise the value of this season. It is important that while we are aware of, and guard jealously our Baptist principles, we never become so proud that we can t learn from others. For further reading on this topic please see Keep me humble God knows me better than I know myself. He knows my gifts and powers, my failings and weakness; what I can do and cannot do; so I desire to be led, to follow Him. And I am quite sure that He has enabled me to do a great deal more in ways which seem to me almost a waste of life in advancing Him than in any other way. I am sure of that. Intellectually, I am weak; in scholarship, nothing; in a thousand things, a baby. He knows this, and so he led me, and greatly blessed me, who am a nobody, to be some use to my fellow-men. How kind, how good, how compassionate art Thou, O God! O, my Father, keep me humble! Help me to have respect toward my fellow men, to recognise these several gifts as from Thee. Deliver me from the sins of malice, envy, or jealousy; and give me hearty joy in my brother s good, in his gifts and talents; and may I be truly glad in his superiority to myself if God be glorified. Root out weak vanity, all devilish pride, all that is abhorrent to the mind of Christ. God hear my prayer! Grant me the wondrous joy of humility, which seeing Thee as all in all. Walk humbly with thy God. From The Lantern December 1884: - 4

A very big thank you to all concerned with the Sunday Harvest afternoon "Tea and Hymns," it was a joy to partake in singing the Harvest Festival hymns and the refreshments so kindly provided. Then on Monday morning a gentle knock on the door that produced a smiling face that provided words of comfort before handing over a box of Harvest goods for which I am most grateful James Stevens I wish to thank all who sent me get well cards and flowers during my recent bout of shingles. These were very much appreciated. From Lynda Hill Thank you to our lovely church family for the flowers we received to celebrate our 33rd Wedding Anniversary. They were so beautiful and so very much appreciated. Also, thank you for the flowers when I broke my foot. It was so uplifting and encouraging to receive them. With Love, Carol MacDougall. Thank you to our Church Family and friends for all the support and encouragement we have been given while Eric has been so unwell his treatment is continuing. Flowers, cards and telephone calls have been very much appreciated and of course prayer continues to sustain us. We take this opportunity to wish you all a Very Happy Christmas and New Year. With love Ann and Eric. 5

The Bible Society The first Sunday in December, in our Church, we celebrate Bible Sunday and donate funds to the Bible Society. Volunteers and members of the Bible Society work tirelessly worldwide to bring hope into the lives of many people living in poverty and civil unrest. I have placed a display and collection box in the Cumberland Street entrance to our Church. If you are able to donate at any time throughout the year it would be so much appreciated by the many people in our world who do not have access to a bible in their own language. Below, I have typed an excerpt from the Bible Society magazine Word in Action for you: Bible People Paula Gooder, Theologian in Residence for Bible Society Hope Hope is a word we use a lot I hope it all works out, I hope I ll see you soon, I hope I can come on Friday. As we often use it, Hope communicates a slightly vague optimism about the future but nothing certain. So, when, in the New Testament, the writers talk about hope it can seem odd to us: hope for us is not a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul (Hebrews 6.19;) it isn t living (1 Peter 1.3) and often disappoints, unlike for Paul in Romans 5:5. I m on a bit of a campaign to rehabilitate hope! Jesus death and resurrection has changed the world forever and so we know with deep certainty that this world is not all there is; that death and despair do not have the last word; that love will win. This is what hope is for me, it is sure, certain and full of joy.... Please feel free to donate not just on Bible Sunday but anytime throughout the year. Donations may be placed in the gift box at the Cumberland Street entrance, placed in a marked envelope in the weekly offering or given directly to me. Many thanks, Carol MacDougall Bible Society Representative for Central. 8

IN LOVING MEMORY OF SANDRA MARSHALL SUNRISE 17TH SEPTEMBER 1944, SUNSET 7TH OCTOBER 2016 (by Shirley Hobbs) Several readers may not have known Sandra, so allow me to tell you about her. I knew her well, as her daughter Sarah married my son, Simon in We became good friends and part of the same extended family, sharing our grandchildren. Sandra was a loving and caring, very courageous Christian lady. Sandra loved all her family, which was demonstrated by the devotion she showed to her husband Gerald, during his final debilitating illness, she visited his care home daily, for four years; despite being in constant pain herself. Sandra loved her children Sarah and Michael, and accepted Simon, along with Michael s wife Sarah-Jo, into the family. She adored all her four grandchildren, Maya, Zachary, Adam and Megan. Sandra was very courageous suffering from rheumatoid arthritis from the age of forty; which was extremely painful, but she was determined to continue enjoying life. Later her kidneys began to fail, entailing dialysis sessions three times a week. Along with other physical conditions and constant pain, she maintained a very cheerful attitude, always concerning herself with the well being of others. Sandra was a Christian lady who had a personal relationship with her friend Jesus. Both Sandra and Sarah were baptised in Central Baptist Church in June Unfortunately on that day the heater had not operated, leaving the water stone cold. The tree baptismal candidates, (Sandra, Sarah and a friend) were given the choice to postpone the ceremony, but they all continued, as they wished to publically show their faith in their Lord, which continued with Sandra all her life. Owing to her condition Sandra was unable to attend church regularly, but enjoyed Tea and Hymns when she came. She was always so grateful for flowers or gifts sent from the fellowship, and one of the final things she said to me was you will thank the church for my harvest gift, won t you. The thanksgiving service for Sandra life reflected her Welsh roots, having been born in Llanelly. Although she left there while young, Sandra was proud of her welsh heritage. This was demonstrated in the service, with recordings of welsh male choirs, the church flowers were the colours of the national flag, red white and green, and several of the mourners wore and item of red. In Sandra eulogy she told of how Sandra had been a talented gymnast at school, and how in her forties she still performed cartwheels and handstands in the garden to the delight of the children. As the years passed and Sandra became less mobile, she always continued her love for family, friends and even strangers. She supported many charities including research in Gerald s illness (similar to M.N.D.). More recently, up to her death, she donated regular grocery gifts to N.O.A.H. (Luton s day centre for homeless people). Her final gift for them was two hanging baskets for their entrance, which hang in memory of her. Sandra lived closely to the Lord she loved. Finally she had a vision of her destination. Sarah was by her side, and she said, Mum saw a light, and looked into the eyes of Jesus. Mum is safe and well now, and can walk, run and continue her cartwheels perfectly without pain, all in the light of God ALL IS WELL 9

Hello from Sunny Somerset Just wanted to let the church family know that we have settled well in our new home down south. It takes some getting used to being in the country and the slower pace of life! We love it here and feel the move was good for all the family. We have spent a lot of time in our garden either working or relaxing. Ian had started working for a butchers here but it did not work out so now he is at another butchers and is managing it, which he loves. Elizabeth and her boyfriend both got job transfers and have settled well. Asher loves his new school and has already helped with parents evenings and made lots of friends. Simeon started a gaming course at college in Taunton, he struggled to begin with but has now made some new friends and seems happier. Nathanael has joined two groups to help him with his Aspergers and mental health and spends a lot of time at the local skate park. As for myself I am enjoying being a housewife and mum. Moving here has made me realise I was doing too much in Luton and was rarely home, so now I focus on my family. We have yet to find a church but we trust the Lord will guide us to where he wants us. Although this is a bit late we would like to thank everyone for your love and prayers whilst we were part of Central and a huge thank you to all who sent cards, love and gifts on our move. Please look after my mum and dad as I miss them immensely. If you would like my address or phone number please speak to my mum. Anyone wanting to visit or stay please get in touch, we love having visitors. God Bless you all Ian, Marysa, Elizabeth, Shaun, Nathanael, Simeon and Asher 10

December Social Action Update MERRY CHRISTMAS! I always get excited at this time of year, being cosy indoors in blankets and a hot chocolate and spending time with loved ones, hoping that there might be a touch of snow! However at this time of year it is always important to remember those who might not be as lucky, and as always the church will be supporting charities over the Christmas period. These charities are CHUMS, Children's Air Ambulance, Happy Days Children's Charity and Barnardos, and collections will be taken for these charities during the carols by candlelight and Christmas Day services. CHUMS is a mental health and emotional Wellbeing service for children and young people based in Silsoe. The charity started in 1997 as a bereavement organisation within the county. In the first year they received 40 bereavement referrals and from then they have gone to over 2,500 referrals a year to support children and young people grieving close family members. The charity has grown in its service too, supporting these individuals with 1:1 and group workshops, residential weekends, family days and annual remembrance service. Many children and young people are referred to CHUMS after a family death through terminal illness, sudden trauma and multiple loss. The children's air ambulance is an air ambulance charity that transfers critically ill children from local hospitals to specialist paediatric centres. This national service is the first and only dedicated helicopter transfer service for critically ill children. It was founded in 2005 and now also moves specialist teams to local hospitals when a child is too sick to travel. The service operates from Coventry Airport and is able to reach all of the UK's specialist children's units within 70 minutes. They often meet children with rare and life threatening conditions where air transport is the only option for survival. Happy Days Children's Charity is based here in Luton, and helps terminally ill, sick, disabled and abused children and young careers with respite breaks, holidays and day trips. They work with children and young people aged 3-17 who come from a variety of backgrounds and suffer from many different conditions. As a charity, they fund trips and outings, unique experiences as well as supporting the families of those they work with. Happy Days highlights the physical, emotional and financial strain on families where a child has special or additional needs, and uses these activities and trips to give respite to both children and families, supporting some of the most vulnerable children with over 23,000 children and their families being supported within the last year. Barnardos is quite a well known charity that started when Thomas Barnardo opened his first boys home in 1868, and as one of the UK's leading children's charities, works directly with 240,000 children, young people and families every year. They run over 960 vital services across the U.K., including counselling for children who have been abused, fostering and adoption services, vocational training and disability inclusion groups. Barnardos works in the areas of substance abuse, children leaving care, domestic violence, mental health, sexual abuse and numerous other areas of need. Each service is different, but Barnardos believes in the potential in every child and young person, no matter who they are, what they have done or what they have been through. If you would like to support these charities, please add to the collections during the carols by candle light service or the Christmas Day service. If you are unable to attend these services, please place your donation in the regular collection in an envelope labelled CHRISTMAS CHARITY COLLECTION to ensure it goes to the desired place. Thank you, Merry Christmas, and give an extra prayer for those in need this festive time. Louise Garbett 11

CUTTING CORNERS TO HELP OTHERS Used stamps don t seem very useful, however, BMS World Mission can use your used stamps to make a difference and improve the lives of others. All you need to do when all those letters and cards hit your mat, is cut the corner of the envelope, leaving about 2cms around the stamp, put them in a small bag or old envelope and place them in the bag that hangs in the Church hall. Alternatively hand them to Claire or Tim Newns. GET AN EXTRA BIRTHDAY CARD AND GIVE A GIFT TO HELP OTHERS! BMS World Mission supports medical work in countries across the world; Your Birthday is an ideal opportunity to help that work. By making a donation on your Birthday through the BMS Birthday Scheme, you will be helping families and changing the lives of communities. The money you give goes to essential medical work around the world, bringing health and well-being to thousands. If you are interested in receiving an extra Birthday card whilst making a difference to others, just come and speak to me. Thanks, Claire Newns 15
