1 Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Second Sunday of Easter April 27, 2014 HOLY COMMUNION Setting Three Gathering CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS The assembly stands. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The presiding minister may lead one of the following or another prayer of preparation. God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. The assembly kneels or stands. Silence is kept for reflection. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. The presiding minister announces God's forgiveness with these or similar words. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. 3 PRAYER OF THE DAY The presiding minister leads the prayer of the day. Let us pray. A brief silence is kept before the prayer. 4 Nicene Creed We believe! in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe! in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe! in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,* who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. *Or, "who proceeds from the Father." The phrase "and the Son" is a later addition to the creed. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION An assisting minister invites the assembly into prayer with these or similar words. With the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God's creation. Each portion of the prayers ends with these or similar words: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. The presiding minister concludes the prayers with these or similar words. Into your hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. PEACE The presiding minister and the assembly greet each other in the peace of the risen Christ. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ's peace, and may say Peace be with you or similar words. The assembly is seated. OFFERING An offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. After the offering is gathered, the assembly stands. Bread, wine, money, and other gifts may be brought forward.

5 OFFERING SONG 184 Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord, and fill to the brim our cup of blessing. Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown, that we may fed with the bread of life. Gather the hopes and dreams of all; unite them with the prayers we offer. Grace our table with your presence, and give us a foretaste of the feast to come. GREAT THANKSGIVING It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise.we praise your name and join their unending hymn. Holy, Holy, Holy After the table is set, the assisting minister may lead one of the following or a similar prayer. Let us pray. Holy God, gracious and merciful, you bring forth food from the earth and nourish your whole creation. Turn our hearts toward those who hunger in any way, that all may know your care; and prepare us now to feast on the bread of life, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love endures forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine. Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your gracious presence in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts: our selves, our time, and our possessions. Use us, and what we have gathered, in feeding the world with your love, through the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER X O God most mighty, O God most merciful, O God our rock and our salvation, hear us as we praise, call us to your table, grant us your life. When the earth was a formless void, you formed order and beauty. When Abraham and Sarah were barren, you sent them a child. When the Israelites were enslaved, you led them to freedom. Ruth faced starvation, David fought Goliath, and the psalmists cried out for healing, and full of compassion, you granted the people your life.

6 You entered our sorrows in Jesus our brother. He was born among the poor, he lived under oppression, he wept over the city. With infinite love, he granted the people your life. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering his death, we cry out [] Celebrating his resurrection, we shout [] Trusting his presence in every time and place, we plead [] LORD'S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen COMMUNION When giving the bread and cup, the communion ministers say The body of Christ, given for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you. and each person may respond O God, you are Breath: send your Spirit on this meal. O God, you are Bread: feed us with yourself. O God, you are wine: warm our hearts and make us one. O God, you are Fire: transform us with hope. O God most majestic, O God most motherly, O God our strength and our song, you show us a vision of a tree of life with fruits for all and leaves that heal the nations. Grant us such life, the life of the Father to the Son, the life of the Spirit of our risen Savior, life in you, now and forever. 11

The assisting minister leads one of the following or a similar prayer after communion. Let us pray. We give you thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us through the healing power of this gift of life. In your mercy, strengthen us through this gift, in faith toward you and in fervent love toward one another; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. O God, we give you thanks that you have set before us this feast, the body and blood of your Son. By your Spirit strengthen us to serve all in need and to give ourselves away as bread for the hungry, through Jesus Christ our Lord. God of abundance, with this bread of life and cup of salvation you have united us with Christ, making us one with all your people. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue forever in the risen life of Jesus Christ, Sending BLESSING The presiding minister proclaims God s blessing. 8 Sermon Notes Fascinating Facts behind the Text (Romans 8:22-27) [Since the reading is not printed on the back cover of the bulletin, it is given here.] 22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; 23 and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for [adoption] the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. 26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs [groans] too deep for words. 27 And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. groaning... we ourselves... groan inwardly... In this letter to the Roman Christians, Paul does not shy away from the reality of Christians who suffer. "We also boast in our sufferings... (5:3); "I consider that the sufferings of this present time..." (8:18); "... hardship, or distress, or persecution..." (8:38). The sufferings of Christians are seen in the context of waiting, in hope, for all creation, not Christians only, to be "set free from its bondage to decay" (8:21). Even the Spirit intercedes with "groans." (The noun in Greek corresponds to the verb 'to groan'.)... we wait for adoption... We are not 'waiting' for adoption, since in 8:15 Paul says "you have received a spirit of adoption." We are waiting for redemption, however. Paul is not contradicting himself; he probably just forgot to cross out 'adoption' in 8:23 before he wrote 'redemption.'... we... have the first fruits... In the verses preceding this text, Paul writes that 'creation was subjected to futility' (8:20), and is still 'groaning' until redemption comes. We, however, have the Spirit, which is the 'first fruits,' or the 'pledge' (2 Corinthians 1:22) of what is to come. For in hope we were saved... Or: "We were saved for hope..." The shape of the Christian life is characterized by suffering: "... hardship, distress, persecution, peril... sword" (8:35). Hope enables Christians to bear the sufferings of the present, while waiting for "the redemption of our body"(v. 23).
