(From a post-abortive woman) If the Planned Parenthood news coverage has caused anyone to experience revived trauma from their own involvement in abortion, a Rachel s Vineyard retreat weekend can help. You ll have a private room for two overnights. Come experience, through Scripture, God s profound acceptance and mercy with a few others who want to move beyond the pain. Preregistration is needed. 6 Engaging Parents: Forming Family Faith Workshop in Portland on November 12 Engaging Parents: Forming Family Faith, a workshop which will offer ways for parish communities to engage parents and help families to grow in faith together, will be held at the Chancery offices in Portland on Thursday, November 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Videoconferencing will also be available in Caribou and Brewer. The workshop will be presented by the Center for Ministry Development. In July, Pope Francis proclaimed, "How precious is the family as the privileged place for transmitting the faith!" Won't you join us to learn how you as a parish leader can help parents transmit faith to their children while deepening their own relationship with God? This workshop will give you a better understanding of today's parents and strategies for reaching out to this new breed of parents. It will offer ways to support them in deepening their own faith at home and in the parish, and through service and outreach together. For more information or to register, visit Journey Retreat, Steeped in Mercy, Offered in Love, in Auburn on Nov Journey, an annual retreat for youth who seek to grow in and deepen their relationships with one another and with Christ, is scheduled for November at Saint Dominic Academy in Auburn. This year s theme is Steeped in Mercy, Offered in Love. Based on the Youth 2000 retreat, Journey is centered on Christ, particularly as we encounter him so intimately in the Scriptures, the Eucharist, and confession. After being immersed in these experiences of his mercy, Journey presenters also invite young people to respond to Jesus by faithfully serving God and neighbor in union with Our Lady and all the saints. Bishop Robert P. Deeley will celebrate Mass on Saturday and spend time with the gathering. The cost is $90 per student or parish chaperone. If a family is not able to afford the full cost, youth ministers should contact the diocese at journey@portlanddiocese.org so that organizers can send a scholarship request form. It is very important that financial concerns not keep any youth from participating. For more information or to register, visit journey@portlanddiocese.org.

10 Refugees of the Syrian Civil War Due to recent media attention, most are aware of the people who have been displaced from their homes as a result of the civil war in Syria, adversely affecting the human dignity of many. Thankfully, there has been a benevolent response from many people around the world. Catholic Relief Services is providing local help to over 700,000 Syrian and Iraqi refugees, mostly women and children. There are many ways for parishioners to assist the refugees currently residing in Maine. Catholic Charities Maine would like to offer educational, interactive, and service activities at your parish. Staff and clients from Catholic Charities Maine s Refugee and Immigration Services program can come to your parish to discuss: the situations that many refugees face at home and in the process of coming to America; what services are offered through their program as well as state and federal programs; and specific ways your parishioners can help advance this important work. This is a great opportunity for your parish to better understand and embody the principal of solidarity, which is so strongly upheld in our Catholic social teaching. Refugee and Immigration Services staff members can make their presentations interactive, and they can even include ethnic food from different locations to better help your parishioners experience another culture. For more information about this opportunity, please contact Michael Smith, director of Catholic Charities Maine s Parish Social Ministry, at (207) or msmith@ccmaine.org. We thank you for standing with Catholic Charities Maine and our brothers and sisters in Christ.
