1 BUDGET CONCERNS... 1 August 9, 2015 FAMILY LIFE... 2 THOSE WHO SERVE... 3 KIDS, MUSIC & NEWS... 4 MATURE METHODISTS... 5 First views OPPORTUNITIES... 6 THE PURPOSE OF FUMC IS TO INVITE ALL PEOPLE TO BECOME FULLY DEVOTED FOLLOWERS OF JESUS CHRIST, GROWING TOGETHER IN LOVE AND SERVICE TO GOD AND NEIGHBOR. FINANCE COMMITTEE UPDATE Even in the dog days of August, our church continues to flourish. We have so much to celebrate at First Church! Just this summer, we have witnessed a wonderful week of children learning and singing with our summer music camps. The children, from ages 3 through 6 th grade, learned so much about God s love through this camp. The following week, the facilities were full of children both from our church and from the community learning about God s love through our Vacation Bible School. More than 100 people joined together as we learned so much about how we are called to be God s light in the world. The same week, 13 of our children and youth and Pastor Craig traveled to Camp Tekoa to enjoy God s beautiful creation at one of our conference camps. Our older adults, lovingly called Mature Methodists, have grown together this summer through bible study and fun daylong events. Finally, we continue to celebrate that we have many visitors in each of our worship services, and have recently welcomed our new worship leader in The Vine service, Josh Costello. None of this could have happened without the generosity of you, as you ve given to your church, and as we celebrate lives being changed through the grace and love of Jesus Christ. We have come to the point in the year, however, that we need to share that we are far behind in our operating budget. As of the first week of August, we are $62,000 behind budget. Your staff is being very cautious in their spending, but the fact remains that we need to make up the amount that we are behind. Please consider an extra gift during the month of August, so that we are able to make up the deficit. We are hopeful that we can make up the deficit so that our fall ministry programs and events can continue to help change lives for Jesus Christ. Please give as you are able. I know that we will make up this deficit, as you have given over and over, and because of your great love for our church. Thank you for your anticipated generosity to help continue the ministry of our great church. If you have any questions, please give me a call. Many blessings, Jim Whitworth, Finance Chairman (on behalf of the entire Finance Committee) Daily Readings Traditional & The Vine Monday Jonah 4 Tuesday 2 Chronicles 6 Wednesday Ezekiel 14 Thursday Matthew 3 Friday 2 Corinthians 7 Saturday 2 Peter 3 Sunday Jonah 4 1

2 A new Kitchen Team has been formed. Please join with Kathy Wood to help prepare and serve a Wednesday night meal every so often. You can contact Kathy to let her know you want to be on her team at or woodkidsmom@gmail.com. We also need volunteers to make homemade goodies for the Vine Service each Sunday. They can be made in advance and frozen if that would be helpful. Please bring them to the kitchen and let Dennis know they are for The Vine. FUTURE EVENTS Carl and Stephanie Wethington are teaching a new Sunday School class for folks who have completed high school and now find themselves in college, at work, both, or who might be looking for the next step in life s journey. The class will meet at 9:45 in the atrium. Actually it s a classroom in the atrium that is located on the second floor near the elevator. The class will be devoted to looking at current issues and events through the lens of scripture. NEW UNITED METHODIST WOMEN CIRCLE First Meeting Tuesday, August 11 at 7 p.m. in the Trinity Classroom Come for fellowship, growth & mission opportunities. Contact Leeann at leeann@firstumchickory.org CHILDREN S SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER ORIENTATION will be Sunday, August 30 directly after church in the Craft Room. ICE CREAM SOCIAL & BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS will be August 23. PROMOTION SUNDAY is August 23. UMW The UMW Mission Focus for the summer months is the GREATER HICKORY COOPERATIVE CHRISTIAN MINISTRY. When you are grocery shopping over the summer, please think about picking up a few extra items for the food pantry. Please make sure they are non-perishable items such as peanut butter; canned fruits, veggies, soups, and meats; pasta and sauce; and dried rice and beans. GHCCM is wanting its clients to have healthier choices, so, if possible, please make sure some of your donations have lower sodium and sugar. Please place donated items in the box marked CCM in the UMW room located in the Community Room. If you have any questions, you may contact Wendy Hanigofsky at or by jhanigofsky@charter.net. Thank you. 2

First United Methodist Church 311 Third Avenue, NE Hickory, NC Telephone: Fax: First UM Church Facebook page: Methodist-Church-Hickory/ The Vine Facebook page: First UM Church Twitter First UM Church Website: *Time AGAIN for KAIROS PRISON MINISTRY* In Matthew 25, Jesus commends the righteous for ministering to those in prison. Yet many of us may not have the opportunity nor feel comfortable actually going into the prisons. The KAIROS PRISON MINISTRY provides the opportunity for EVERYONE to join in! On September 17-20, 2015, a group will take the Love of Christ into the Alexander Correctional Center. Many of you have supported us in the past, and we need your help again through prayer, cookies and financial support. The cost of this weekend is approximately $9,500 and during the weekend, approximately 50,000 cookies will be shared with 1,000 + inmates. Your help is needed by praying for the inmates and team members, by baking cookies (each team member must bring 100 dozen cookies!) and by contributing to cost of the weekend. A contribution of only $5 will sponsor a meal for one of the inmates during the weekend. Many of you have helped in this ministry before, and I ask that you prayerfully consider helping again. Please sign up to pray for the KAIROS weekend. Look for a sign up sheet in your SS classroom, or call me to pick a time. Cookies are needed (anytime) before Wednesday, September 16, and I can provide you with helpful instructions about the preparation of cookies. Tax deductible contributions should be made payable to Kairos Prison Ministry of NC and given to me. ANY amount is helpful! I also encourage anyone who may have an interest in personally being part of this ministry to contact me. This is a unique opportunity to share and experience God s love. No special skill or talent is needed just your love for God and neighbor! Please contact Jim Chandler ( ) with any questions or to arrange pick -up of cookies, contributions or prayer vigil sign-ups. 6
