6 NOTICES: Scripture Readers Interested in reading scripture on a Sunday? There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board. Holocaust survivor speaks Holocaust survivor and former UBC professor Rene Goldman will be sharing his experience of life during and after World War Two on Monday, Oct. 1, 7:00 p.m. at F.H. Collins Secondary School. This is a free public event, all are welcome. René Goldman was born in Luxembourg. He is a child-survivor of the Holocaust (Shoah). His parents came from Poland where most of his Polish relatives perished during the Shoah. During the war he lived hidden, first with his parents in Belgium, then in a Roman Catholic convent school, and finally with peasant farmers in France. Professor Goldman, now a professor emeritus of Asian Studies (Chinese history), taught at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Goldman's visit to Whitehorse, which includes talks in local high-schools in both official languages, is made possible by the Azrieli Foundation in partnership with FH Collins Secondary, Vanier Catholic Secondary, Porter Creek Secondary, and Académie Parhélie. Whitehorse United Church gratefully acknowledges a grant of $ from Julie Jai and David Trick to be used for the highest priority needs of our organization. 7 MARK YOUR CALENDAR - Friday, October 19 Ham dinner fundraiser! THERE ARE SIGNUP SHEETS AT THE BACK OF THE CHURCH. WE'LL NEED HELP SETTING UP, CLEANING UP, SERVING, AND ADVERTISING. PLEASE CONSIDER HOW YOU CAN HELP WITH THIS EVENT. [Editor note: apologies for the reference to a TURKEY dinner in the last e-news. My error habit (or wishful thinking? ] Communion Server Training Saturday, October 20 th at church. For youth and adults who would like to serve communion. It will be a two hour session, including some Bible study about communion, and then practice, to answer such things as "where would I stand? Who prepares the bread and juice? What do I say?" and so on. We'd love to have you join us. 10 am-noon Saturday, Oct Noon - A BABY CLOTHING SWAP. Completely free. Bring any baby/children s clothing your children have outgrown. Come and take what you need from what others have brought. If you have nothing to bring, come anyway and take what you need. Spread the word to other parents! Secret Sister Potluck Supper: Wednesday October 24 in Lewis Hall at the church. Gather starting at 5:30pm; potluck supper to follow at 6:00pm. You don't have to be a Secret Sister!! All women are welcome to join us for a time of fun and fellowship. For info call: Beth , Sharon , or Jennifer After church Sunday Sept. 23, we had a meeting of people interested in helping with our pastoral care committee. This committee's work is one way we care for one another in our church. People do such things as: - visit when someone is in the hospital - visit MacAulay and Copper Ridge Place and Thompson Centre - send cards to people - phone people from time to time If you are interested in helping out, we promise three things: 1) there will be good work for you to do 2) we will respect your limits. For example if you feel you could make one or two visits a month, we would not ask you to do more than that. and finally 3) we'll support you, and offer training if you wish, and more than that, God will be with you. It's a huge privilege to care for each other in God's name. Page 7

8 THERE IS A TRAINING SESSION SATURDAY NOVEMBER 2 FROM 10-NOON. Might you be moved to help others when in need? As you will know from our annual report, we have a small fund called the "benevolent fund" and we use it to help people out, usually on a one-time basis, for emergencies. We've used it quite a lot of it lately, and that's both something to be sad about because it's sad to know people need it, but it's something to celebrate too because we have the funds to do it. THANKS TO YOU. The fund balance is down a bit at present and if you feel you could contribute (without taking away from your normal offering) that would be wonderful. Money for back to school supplies will be needed shortly, if past years are any indication. (Or the back to school supplies themselves would be welcome too of course) Please pray about this and respond as you are led. Page 8

9 Daring to Share Book Study Authors Sandra Beardstall, etc. Multi-denominational congregations offer rich soil for new interpretations of what it means to be a church. These parishes have chosen to covenant together for worship, service, ministry, mission, and nurturing of faith across two or more denominational traditions. Daring to Share tells their stories, investigates their practices, and proposes a fresh vision of church for the twenty-first century. This book equips ordained and lay leaders for the formation and flourishing of such ministries. It describes five models of partnership, analyzes the parish life cycle, interprets how worship works, addresses constitutional and governance issues, and reflects theologically on the intersection of diversity and unity. Place: Trinity Lutheran Church: 312 Strickland Street When: Beginning October 14 from 7-9. This study is 12 weeks long. We will commence on October 14, then every Sunday after until December 2 nd. We will reconvene on January 6 th for the last four sessions. This is interdenominational study co-hosted by Trinity Lutheran Church and the Whitehorse United Church. There are five paperback books available at a cost of $31.00 each. You can also order the kindle version for $9.99 at amazon.ca. 11 NO AND LOW PLASTICS CHALLENGE! What is it? WUC in the World invites you to take the challenge of using no *single use plastics or reducing your use of plastics in your household between Sunday, October 14 (noon) and Sunday, November 11 (noon). *single use plastics or disposable plastics, are used only once before they are thrown away or recycled. These items are things like plastic bags, straws, coffee stirrers, soda and water bottles, cutlery, foam trays and takeout containers, and most food and consumer product packaging. How to participate? Sign up as a participant on the bulletin board at church by Sunday, October 14 Collect all the single use plastic in your household or that you use during this time period. This includes restaurant or takeout meals such as plastic cups, straws, plates, cutlery, etc. Take a photo of your whole collection of plastics from the period Oct. 14 to Nov. 11 (noon). Include photos of any plastics from your meals or activities outside of your home. Make a note of any things you notice about your use of plastics, any substitutions you find or tricks that you develop to deal with it Label your photos with your name/phone number and bring them on Nov. 11. The photos will be mounted on a poster to be shared with the congregation on Sun. Nov. 11 & 18 For more information contact Lillian at What ACTION will we take? Sun. After church we will have refreshments and snacks and share our insights, our frustrations, lessons we learned and solutions we came up with for reducing our use of plastics. Commit to what we individually, as families, as church community and as citizens plan to do. A draw from those who participated and included their photo(s) to win an item to support your NO or LOW PLASTICS USE! Why do it? Some facts about plastics: (from EcoWatch.com) Over the last 10 years we have produced more plastic than during the whole of the last century 50% of the plastic we use, we use just once and throw away. More than 1 million plastic bags are used every minute. The average American throws away approximately 185 pounds of plastic per year. We currently recover only 5% of the plastics we produce. The production of plastic uses around 8% of the world's oil production (bioplastics are not a good solution as they require food source crops). It takes 500-1,000 years for plastic to degrade. Billions of pounds of plastic can be found in swirling convergences in the oceans making up about 40 percent of the world's ocean surfaces. 80 percent of pollution enters the ocean from the land. 12 Plastic constitutes approximately 90 percent of all trash floating on the ocean's surface, with 46,000 pieces of plastic per square mile. One million sea birds 100,000 marine mammals are killed annually from plastic in our oceans. 44% of all seabird species, 22% of whales or dolphins or porpoises, all sea turtle species and a growing list of fish species have been documented with plastic in or around their bodies. In samples collected from Lake Erie, 85 percent of the plastic particles were smaller than twotenths of an inch, and much of that was microscopic. Researchers found 1,500 and 1.7 million of these particles per square mile. Some of these compounds found in plastic have been found to alter hormones or have other potential human health effects. SOME TIPS to reduce single use plastics from EcoWatch.com: Choose to reuse when it comes to shopping bags and bottled water. Cloth bags and metal or glass reusable bottles are available locally at great prices. Refuse single-serving packaging, excess packaging, straws and other "disposable" plastics. Carry reusable utensils in your purse, backpack or car to use at bbq's, potlucks or take-out restaurants. Reduce everyday plastics such as sandwich bags and juice cartons by replacing them with a reusable lunch bag/box that includes a thermos. Bring your to-go mug with you to the coffee shop, smoothie shop or restaurants that let you use them, which is a great way to reduce lids, plastic cups and/or plastic-lined cups. Go digital! No need for plastic cds, dvds and jewel cases when you can buy your music and videos online. Page 12
