In Mark s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God s own voice. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. Some false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of authority. But in today s Gospel we learn that Jesus fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn t an authority because he was popular or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God s purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God s very words filling our mouths. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. MINISTRY NEWS SERRA CLUB The Serra Club of Reno is interested in new members of all ages. Both men and women are welcome. Join us for the 8:00 a.m. mass on the first Friday of each month at OLS with breakfast afterwards in the parish center, 1200 S. Arlington Ave. Questions: Jim Toner Reminder: First Friday February 2 CHILDREN S RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Our Confirmation Teens, as part of their paper on their saint, are asked, Would you like to be a saint? This year a greater number than usual said Yes. Here are some of their reasons: Yes, I think it would be a great honor to be a saint. Yes, so that I can make other people happy by doing simple things (like Therese of Lisieux). I would like to be a saint because I would like to believe in something so passionately and with all of my heart that I would be willing to die for it. I would want to be able to live so selflessly and trusting that I would give up my entire life for a cause. Yes, (people) would see me as an example so that they can make an impact, too. NEEDY MINISTRY The Food Pantry is always in need of non-perishable food items, such as: Spam, canned meats, tuna, canned fruit, canned vegetables, soups, cold cereals, jam, peanut butter, rice, ramen, evaporated milk, non-perishable soy milk. We are also collecting toiletry items. We no longer need diapers or diaper wipes, plastic or paper bags. Please bring your donations with you to mass and leave in the Food for Life area of the church. Thank you for supporting Sr. Carmen and helping our less fortunate brothers and sisters throughout the year. PARISH STAFF Parish Office x 500 Pastor pastor@olsparish.com Associate Pastor Fr.
