This year we commemorate e 100 anniversary of e First World War ( e war to end all wars ). Society emerged from is historic conflict completely and utterly changed, its moral and eical underpinnings shaken to eir foundations. The battlefield padres courageously and valiantly tried to keep souls and spirits lifted up; to preach a message of hope and comfort even in e midst of hell and chaos. One of eir chief weapons against e evil and tyranny was to be e sonorous verses and prayers of The Book of Common Prayer. News Flash - English Choir to present concert at St Barnabas The Choir of Christ s College, Cambridge will give a concert at e Church of St Barnabas on Tuesday, July 8 as part of eir tour rough Ontario and Quebec is summer. Sung Mattins is held e first Sunday of each mon at 9:30 a.m. at Christ Church Caedral. The Service lasts about 30 minutes. BCP Evensong... Choral Evensong continues e first and ird Sunday of each mon between September and June at 4:00 p.m. at St Matew s Church,. Sunday Evensongs at 4:30 p.m. will resume at Christ Church Caedral after Thanksgiving. BCP Holy Communion... At St Barolomew s, (The Guards Chapel adjacent to Rideau Hall), each Sunday at 8:15 a.m. and e first Sunday of e mon at 10:30 a.m., Holy Communion is celebrated according to e BCP rite. 5 We have included information about is summer s Conferences in e hope at we all try to encourage attendance from wiin e Branch. As our Treasurer notes, e conferences are supported financially by our Branch. St Michael s You Conference 2014 The St Michael s You Conference, now in its 19 year, was founded to provide an environment where high school-aged you could grow in eir fai, rough teaching at is faiful to e Anglican tradition. Through worship drawn from e BCP, e conference invites participants to experience e power of God in eir lives. Once again, e conference will be held at Selah Camp, a short drive nor of Wiarton on e Bruce Peninsula (souwestern Ontario) from Monday, August 25 to Saturday, August 30. Information may be obtained by checking e website at The Registration fee is $ wi a deposit of $50.00 required by July 4. There is still time to register. A number of e teens have returned year after year as ey find it beneficial. As in past years, if you, your Rector, or fellow parishioners know of teenagers aged who would be interested in attending is year s Conference and who might appreciate financial assistance, please contact Wesley Warren at * * * * * * * * * * The Cranmer Theological Conference As noted in our Branch Newsletter (Lent issue), due to unforeseen circumstances, e Cranmer Theological Conference will not be held is year, and has been postponed until furer notice. * * * * * * * * * * The 34 Annual Atlantic Theological Conference This year s Conference, entitled The Meaning of Evil, will be held at e University of King s nd College, in Halifax, N.S., from Sunday evening, June 22 to noon, Wednesday, June 25. Speakers will include The Rev. Helena Malton (Rector, Parish of Digby and Weymou, N.S.), The Rev. Dr Brian Spence (Rector, Parish of Ludlow and Blissfield, Diocese of Fredericton), Dr Robert Kennedy (Chair, Religious Studies, St Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, N.S.), Dr Matew Robinson (Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy, St. Thomas University, Fredericton), Dr Neil Robertson (Associate Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences at King s College, Halifax), Dr Daniel Brandes (Director, Foundation Year Programme, King s College, Halifax), and Daniel Watson (Dalhousie University, Halifax). Papers will include: a dramatized reading from C.S. Lewis Screwtape Letters, Evil in e Bible, Augustine and Evil, Aquinas and Evil, The Evil I : The Transformation of Evil in e Reformation and Enlightenment, Hannah Arendt s Early Doctrine of Radical Evil, and e Practical Means of discerning good and evil according to St Antony e Great and e The Book of Common Prayer. Bishop Anony Burton, now Rector of e Church of e Incarnation in Dallas, Texas, will preach at e Conference Eucharist at St George s (Round) Church on e Feast of St John e Baptist. 6 You are Invited to Attend an Address wi Music and Slides The Book of Common Prayer : A Reasonable, Religious, and Holy Hope in War and Peace presented by The Right Reverend Peter R. Coffin (Anglican Bishop Ordinary to e Canadian Armed Forces and Retired Bishop of e Diocese of ) on Sunday 22 June 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Christ Church, Bells Corners 3861 Old Richmond Road, Nepean Bishop Coffin intends to show how e Prayer Book was used extensively by military chaplains of e Church of England. He will discuss e part hymns played during wartime and how ey helped e troops. Frances Macdonnell will direct e Cranmer Singers as ey assist in e presentation. The Bishop will include vintage photographs in his lecture. The Lecture will be sponsored by e Branch of e Prayer Book Society of Canada. 8 NOTES FROM THE TREASURER As you know, e Branch recently offered a Poetry Competition, poems to be inspired by and based on e works of Dame Julian of Norwich. Our advertisement for e Poetry Contest which appeared twice in The Anglican Planet attracted a lot of attention, and our competition was aimed at encouraging participation by all Canadians. The Poetry Contest closed on March 31, and we were gratified at we received twenty excellent poems, which are now being read by ree expert Readers. We hope to announce e winners before e end of June. Prizes are being offered in e amounts of $500, $300, and $100. We ended e 2013 calendar year in a positive state wi a bank balance of $2, ank you all very much for your support! The expensive time of e year is upon us, when we will be making our usual donations of $500 to e St. Michael s You Camp, and $700 to clergy attending e annual Atlantic Theological Conference. We will also donate money for e purchase of new BCP s for e students attending Augustine College next fall, and as well we will incur e usual costs of publishing our Branch Newsletters and contributing towards e cost of e National Newsletter. We are now eagerly anticipating Bishop Peter Coffin s presentation on Sunday June 22 to celebrate e comfort which e BCP has given in time of peace and war during e last century, and we hope at is event will serve to attract new members to e Society. Please join us in Christ Church, Bells Corners, at 3 pm on June 22. The Cranmer Singers will be leading e music during is event, and favourite hymns will be sung.
