2 Chairman s Remarks St Barnabas Church in has for some time filled e Branch s need for a home base for monly Executive meetings as well as many Branch meetings and events, in grateful anks for which we have given e Parish a nominal annual donation. Thus it was wi trepidation at we learned of Fr Kirby s transfer to Cornwall. There followed is news an anxious period until his replacement was announced. We are very grateful at Fr Stewart Murray was named and at he and Connie, his wife, have lost no time in acquainting emselves wi e Parish. Fortunately, ey are not strangers to Branch members who for over a dozen years have accepted eir annual invitation to St James, Carp for a sung Evensong and Pub Night. In recent years e Pub dinner has changed into a pot-luck dinner in eir Parish Hall. We hope at all e changes in personnel being made wiin e Diocese go as smooly and wish em all well. As foot-notes to e above, your Executive has mailed to Fr Frank on your behalf a card expressing our deep appreciation, best wishes and also congratulations on his appointment as Archdeacon of Stormont. Included wi e card was a gift certificate because yet anoer book for packing would not have been kind. The second foot-note concerns our next event, to be held in Carp. Fr Murray has arranged for Fr David Andrew, Rector of St James, Carleton Place, to take our Service on Thursday, June 19. We hope to see as many of you as possible ere. Directions are available by calling Your Executive is planning a series of articles to be placed in CROSSTALK is Fall to raise our profile wiin e Diocese. This is expensive but proved to be effective in 1999 when Willa Rea prepared a series to celebrate e 450 Anniversary of e BCP. The leng of e series depends on our resources so it is our hope at ose of you unable to attend events will support is initiative. Thank you. Faint-hearted and discouraged about e future of e Anglican Communion? PBSC lifers should look up e pre-lambe 1988 National Circular (copies available by calling ) and pray for Lambe We are indebted to e Rev. Dr Peter Toon for e international scorecard of who s who currently wiin e Anglican Communion. Financial Donations to e Branch and to e National Society Confusion often arises when donations are made. As you well know bo parts of e Society have addresses. Please ensure you mail your cheque to eier e Carling Avenue address for Branch donations and / or e P.O. Box address for National Society donations.
3 Evensong in e Parish of Huntley at St James, Carp Remember our Annual Evensong at St James, Carp on Thursday, June 19. Please note at we have changed is event to a Thursday evening and not a Friday evening as in e past. The Preacher for e service will be The Rev. David Andrew, Rector of St James, Carleton Place. As is our custom, e service will be followed by a potluck supper. Your contributions to e supper may be left in e Parish Hall prior to e service. Do come and enjoy our last Branch event prior to e summer. THE GODFREY HEWITT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Angela Hewitt, Canada s favourite concert pianist, recently gave two benefit recitals in to raise funds for e scholarship fund which was created in her faer s memory after his dea in These two recitals raised over $50,000! This wonderful increase to e capital of e scholarship fund, now standing at over $120,000, will guarantee e availability of scholarships for many years ahead to help young organists study abroad and become teachers emselves, in order to supply future organists for e Church. There have now been ree national organ scholarships awarded rough e Godfrey Hewitt Memorial Scholarship since This award, e largest organ scholarship in Canada, amounting to $5,000 annually, was awarded in 2005 to Craig Humber from Newfoundland, in 2006 to Isabelle Demers from Québec, and in 2007 to Michael Unger from Toronto; e 2008 competition is presently under way. (The first scholarship winner, Craig Humber, gave a recital at Christ Church Caedral last November.) The competition will continue each spring on an annual basis, and in is way we hope to increase e supply of highly-trained church musicians in Canada in order to train future generations of church musicians. Full details of e rules and regulations for e competition may be found on e website of e Royal Canadian College of Organists, Centre (please see ). Furer tax-receiptable contributions are always welcome. If you are interested in helping, please make cheques payable to RCCO - Centre, and send em to: Frances Macdonnell Carling Avenue, Ontario K2H 5A
4 Anglicanism in Nor America--polity and liturgy, especially written for folks abroad Peter Toon On e old Anglican map of e world, Nor America comprised two provinces, bo in communion wi e Church of England rough e See of Canterbury, and bo in e Global Anglican Communion. They were e Anglican Church of Canada and e Protestant Episcopal Church of e U.S.A. In 2008, many Anglicans (Episcopalians) around e world bo in e Nor and in e Sou still use is old map. However, a growing number uses a revised map, which is not yet stable for revisions continue monly. The revised map indicates at e Anglican Way is no longer solely represented by two national provinces, but at five oer provinces of e Global Anglican Family have entered e territory, and are seeking rough missions to create eir own outposts in Nor America. Their arrival may be traced to ree sources: partly by invitation from dissident locals, partly by eir distaste of e innovatory, religious agendas of e two provinces, and partly out of eir own missionary spirit. In mid-2008 ese provinces are: Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and e Souern Cone of Sou America. In eir entry into Nor America, ey treat e two resident provinces as no longer auentically Anglican in doctrine and morals, and us ey neier seek permission to enter or on entering seek to cooperate. To understand e new map aright, we need also to be aware at before e arrival of ese overseas provinces on Nor American soil, ere were oer, small Anglican groups usually known as The Continuing Anglicans. They are found in several small jurisdictions in bo Canada and e U.S.A. (e.g. e Anglican Caolic Church of Canada, and in e U.S.A., e Anglican Caolic Church, The United Episcopal Church and The Anglican Province of Christ e King). Their origins were in secession from e two provinces in However, since ese traditionalists had noing to do wi e Global Anglican Communion, ey were not normally included on e Anglican map of at Communion. Furer, ey have had very little if anying to do wi e seceders from The Protestant Episcopal Church in e twenty-first century, at is wi e Episcopal dissidents who have been embraced by e overseas provinces in e last few years. When one asks what kind of liturgies are used in e varied churches found on is map, en one receives an answer which points to pluralism. Let us try to indicate e main content of is pluralism. (a) In Canada bo in some parts of e Anglican Church of Canada and roughout e Continuing churches (from 1977 or before) e primary prayer book used is The Book of Common Prayer (1962) of e Anglican Church of Canada. This is a revision of e classic, English edition of (b) In Canada bo in most parts of e Anglican Church of Canada and roughout e churches at have recently allied wi overseas provinces, e primary prayer book used is known as The Book of Alternative Services (1985). (c) In e U.S.A. in e Continuing churches e primary prayer book is The Book of Common Prayer (1928) which is an edition of e American form of e Prayer Book, first issued in This is also used in a few parishes of The Protestant Episcopal Church. (d) In e U.S.A., in The Protestant Episcopal Church e primary prayer book is known as The Book of Common Prayer (1979). This represents a new kind of prayer book wi multiple alternatives and varied eologies, very different from e traditional Book of Common Prayer. The Canadian Book of Alternative Services is based upon it. Also used in is Church are newer liturgies, approved locally by diocesan bishops, which incorporate basic concerns of modern, progressively liberal liberationism and feminism. (e) In e U.S.A., in e new Anglicanism, outside e Protestant Episcopal Church and usually in some relation to an overseas Anglican province or diocese, e primary Prayer Book is at of e Church at e seceders have left, The Book of Common Prayer (1979); and also ere is some use of e prayer books of e overseas Anglican provinces working in e U.S.A. (e.g., e 1995 Prayer Book of Nigeria which is similar to e 1979 American one). A growing number are beginning to use An Anglican Prayer Book (2008) which is a contemporary language form of e classic Book of Common Prayer services as used in Nor America over e centuries, in e editions of 1662, 1928 and So we have e situation bo in Canada and e U.S.A. where most of e recent seceders continue to use wiout hesitation, and as part of eir orodoxy, e very prayer book of e Church ey have left behind, and also e very prayer books at certainly gave e context and support for many of e innovations pursued by ese
5 Churches from e 1970s to e present. There is, however, some recognition at a sound eological basis is needed by e new Anglicanism. To is end e Common Cause Partners (dissident and seceding groups in relations wi overseas provinces) have drawn up such a basis which includes e classic Anglican formularies, ose of e Church of England of 1662, and e very formularies written into e constitution of many provinces of e Global Anglican Communion. There is little evidence as yet at is is seriously guiding e forms of liturgy used in e new Anglicanism. [The Prayer Book Societies in bo e U.S.A. and Canada seek bo to make Anglicans of all kinds aware of eir strong tradition of Common Prayer, and also to encourage em to use it bo for personal devotion and public worship, via one or oer of e ree editions of e classic Common Prayer Tradition known and used in Nor America e editions of 1662, 1928 and These ree belong to one distinct family of Anglican liturgy, whereas e American 1979 and e Canadian 1985 books represent a new and unstable form of modern liturgy wi ecumenical roots and constantly open to revision to accommodate evolving concerns.] This article is reprinted wi e permission of e Rev. Dr. Peter Toon 13 Annual St Michael s You Conference, Ontario rd The Conference will be held in souwestern Ontario between August 18 and 23 near e town of Durham (norwest of Toronto). The Conference, emphasizing teaching at is faiful to e Anglican tradition is led by clergy and lay adult leaders. During e first week, our own PBSC will be represented by ree members: Toronto Branch President, Diana Verseghy, Greater Niagara Branch President, Alex Urquhart, and e Rector of St. George s (Round) Church in Halifax, Fr George Wesaver. During e second week our representatives will be our National Chairman, and Assistant Priest at St Peter s Caedral, Charlottetown, Fr David A. Harris, Fr Gordon Maitland from Windsor, Ontario, and Sharon Dewey Hetke from Saskatchewan. At General Synod 2007, e PBSC provided tote bags to e delegates. Many people, even ose unsympaetic to our cause, were seen to be carrying em during e course of GS For Lambe, our Canadian gimmick will be to supply delegates wi umbrellas duly inscribed wi PBSC markings. Imagine e sight of many, many bishops on a rainy British day being shielded by Canadian-designed umbrellas! Watch your televisions for newscasts of Lambe. Two raer high-profile events will be co-sponsored by e ree Societies. The first will be a Reception, rd at which e Bishop of London will be e Special Speaker. It will be held on Wednesday, July 23. The second Reception will be held e following week, on Wednesday, July 30, during which e Baroness (P.D.) James of Holland Park will be e Special Speaker. 8 NOTES FROM THE TREASURER Here are e figures for e Branch s present financial situation so far in 2008: Carried forward: $6, Income: $ Expenditures: $1, Present balance: $5, As you can see from e figures above, e Branch is falling somewhat behind in its financial situation, leaving us in a quandary as to how much money we can safely spend is year on e projects we would normally undertake, which include assisting two members of e clergy to attend e Atlantic Theological Conference in June, as well as supporting one or more of e Parish Alive! program, e St. Michael s Camp for teenagers, e cost of BCP s for Augustine College, providing bursaries to eological students, and so on. In addition, as well as e cost of our regular programs, we plan to publish anoer newsletter is year and to give a grant towards e cost of e next National Newsletter as we always do. Your Executive would also like to publish a series of occasional articles in Crosstalk, e Diocesan newspaper, extolling e value of e Book of Common Prayer in our prayer life, advertising e two books by Sue Careless about e BCP (a ird is expected next year), and inviting Crosstalk s readers to support e Society. Such articles, however, are very expensive, but at is moment in e life of e Anglican Church of Canada, we cannot stand still; we must eier move forward, or retreat. Therefore, your Executive very much hope at our members will continue to support e work of e Branch rough financial donations. To at end, a tear-off is printed below and an envelope is provided for your use. Your help is always appreciated, and all contributions are fully taxreceiptable Please return is form in e self-addressed envelope provided to: The Treasurer Prayer Book Society of Canada, Branch Carling Avenue, Ontario K2H 5A6 I wish to make a donation to e Branch and am enclosing a cheque for $.
