3 Our new Branch Executive At our 2012 Annual General Meeting held at e Church of St Barnabas on Wednesday in Easter Week (April 11 ) e following members were elected: Wesley Warren, Chairman Ronald Bentley, Vice-Chairman and Editor of e Branch Newsletter Joan Wilson, Past Chair Frances Macdonnell, Treasurer Alice Conway, Recording Secretary Ru Bell, Member-at-Large Donald MacLean, Member-at-Large William Silver, Member-at-Large Words from our new Branch Chairman... Greetings! This is my first newsletter message to you as your new Branch Chairman and I want to wish you all a very blessed Eastertide. I would be remiss in not anking Joan Wilson (Past Chairman) for her years of devoted service; Joan has guided e branch rough many challenges wi grace and wisdom, and I am sure you will join me in extending best wishes to her on her retirement. As many of you know, 2012 is a year of important anniversaries for e Book of Common Prayer, and to mark e 50 anniversary of e Canadian BCP (1962) e Branch is sponsoring an Essay Competition on e BCP (ably organized by Frances Macdonnell) wi significant cash prizes. Please watch out for furer details in upcoming newsletters. There will be a wonderful Choral Evensong at St. Paul's Caedral, London, U.K., on Wednesday, May 2 to mark e nation-wide celebration of e 1662 BCP in England, and e First Sunday in Advent, December 2, marks e adoption of e Canadian BCP (1962) by all Canadian Anglicans. We truly have much to be ankful for in e liturgical heritage of e Book of Common Prayer, and, while e national church may have developed a certain amnesia concerning its importance, let us celebrate it vigorously is year and take every opportunity to promote its use. Yours sincerely, Wesley Warren * * * * * * * Notes from our Past Chairman... When I assumed e position of Chairman of e Branch back before e turn of e century, I had aspirations of one day at least equaling Bill Silver s tenure as Treasurer of e Branch. Not only am I short of at landmark wi 16 years but at one point in our history Bill willingly took over e short term responsibilities of Acting Treasurer for e National as well! - and he is still an active member of our Branch Executive! Wesley Warren is now our Chairman and we are currently working our way rough our Anniversary Event - e Essay Competition for young Canadians which was announced as our Anniversary National Project mid-way rough last year. More on is topic elsewhere. I would like to ank our Branch membership for eir unfailing support of e Executive s guidance in recent years. I know I am joined by Bill in saying Thank you and we welcome Wesley Warren on your behalf for agreeing to take on e Chairmanship of e Branch. Sincerely, Joan Wilson

4 May 26 Event: Rediscovering Reverence A talk given by Ralph Heintzman On Saturday, May 26, at 2.00 p.m., Ralph Heintzman, one of e Branch s most faiful members, will present a talk in St. Barnabas Church Hall on e subject matter of his recent book Rediscovering Reverence, published in 2011 by e McGill-Queen s University Press. One of e advertisements for is book says: Surprising and insightful, Rediscovering Reverence offers a rational explanation of what e modern western world calls religion, arguing at it is not what most people assume. Questioning western culture s evolving use of e word religion over e last five centuries, Ralph Heintzman strips away misunderstandings to demonstrate at fai - unlike belief - is not someing one has but someing one does, leading e reader to a deeper understanding of religious practice and its necessary place in human life.... The auor argues at religious practice is rooted in two basic ways human beings act in e world. it is erefore an element in e structure of e human spirit, not a phase in its history. Ralph Heintzman wrote is book, he tells us, for his sons Geoffrey and David, (who, incidentally were bo Head Choristers as boys in e Choir of Christ Church Caedral), who were brought up as Christians; but in e spirit of is book, eir upbringing was in e doing of religion more an in talking about e doing... But [is] is not enough. At some point it becomes necessary to talk about e ideas and experience at lie behind religious practice. Those of us who follow e practice of e Book of Common Prayer as a way of life, as what we do, to paraphrase Ralph s phrase, find indeed at e BCP, as its 1962 Preface says, is offered to e Canadian Church wi e hope at ose who use it may become more truly what ey really are: e People of God, at New Creation in Christ which finds its joy in adoration of e Creator and Redeemer of all. (BCP, p. vii). Ralph Heintzman is an Adjunct Research Professor in e Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at e University of and a Senior Fellow of Massey College in e University of Toronto. Please join us for Ralph Heintzman s talk at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday May 26 in e Fred Allen Memorial Hall of St. Barnabas Church, (corner of Kent and James Streets). Please use e Hall entrance on Kent Street. Should you be taking a taxi e door is marked as 394 Kent Street. Ralph s talk will be followed by an opportunity for questions and discussion, and en by refreshments.

7 The BCP Anniversary Essay Competition! In celebration of e 350 anniversary of e 1662 Book of Common Prayer and of e 50 anniversary of e 1962 Book of Common Prayer (Canada) in 2012, e Branch has announced an essay competition wi e intention of raising e interest in and use of e Book of Common Prayer amongst Canadians aged Prizes of $2,500, $1,500, and $750 are being offered for e best essays of approximately 3,000 words on e following topic: Discuss e relevance of e Book of Common Prayer in e 21 st Century, in e light of e following two quotations. The BCP is held in great affection by all kinds of Anglicans. This is not simply because of its beautiful language, but because it carefully reflects bo Holy Scripture and e teaching of e early, undivided Christian Church.... Prayers at have stood e test of time can still speak wi an uncanny freshness today. Sue Careless, Discovering e Book of Common Prayer, Volume 1, Anglican Book Centre Publishing, 2003, 2006, 2011, p. 24. Anglicans committed to e auority of Scripture have used and continue to use e Book of Common Prayer because it allows em to worship e Lord in e beauty of holiness and wi spiritual understanding. The Book of Common Prayer... is a well-tested way of praying e Holy Scripture in public worship and in a disciplined manner for e whole Christian Year, from Advent to e end of e Trinity season. Peter Toon, The Anglican Formularies and Holy Scriptures, Brynmill Press/Edgeways Books, Herefordshire, The Prayer Book Society of e United States, Philadelphia, 2006, p. 26. In October 2010, a group of traditional Anglicans formed e Parish of St Matew e Apostle under e pastoral oversight of Bp Mark Havilland of e Anglican Caolic Church, Original Province. Services at St. Matew s follow The Book of Common Prayer including e use of e BCP lectionary. Fr Peter Jardine, ordained eight years ago, is e Rector of St. Matew s. Fr Peter anticipates at e move will be good for e parish, it will allow us to reach out to far more people, knowing at we can accommodate em comfortably in greater numbers. He can be contacted at or pjardine@primus.ca. The Anglican Caolic Church is an orodox body dedicated to faifully continuing traditional Anglican liturgy and orodox belief. It was founded in 1977 after an international congress of nearly 2,000 Anglican bishops, clergy and lay people met in St. Louis, Missouri, to establish an orodox jurisdiction in which traditional Anglicanism would be maintained by returning to e fullness of e Fai of e undivided Caolic Church. Acting according to e principles determined by e seven great Ecumenical Councils of e ancient Church and adopting initially e name "Anglican Church of Nor America", e Anglican Caolic Church is now a worldwide body, having churches in e USA, e United Kingdom, Australia, Sou Africa, Haiti, and Sou America. Find out more at anglicancaolic.org. St. Matew s extends an invitation to everyone who is interested in traditional Anglicanism. Holy Communion is celebrated every Sunday morning at 8:45 a.m. at Our Saviour Lueran Church, 715 Roosevelt Ave (near Carling and Churchill). We are very grateful to is Lueran parish for eir warm welcome and for sharing eir church wi us.

10 NOTES FROM THE TREASURER I am delighted to report at we are experiencing a happy increase in e donations given to e Branch. In 2011, only a total of $2,783 was received during e entire year, but up to April 15 is year, we had already received $3,370. This is a most welcome change from e declining pattern of donations during e last several years, and I attribute it, at least in part, to e willingness of e Branch s membership to support e costs of e 2012 BCP Essay Competition, e largest project e Branch has undertaken for quite some years. In particular, anks to one substantial memorial donation, we have been enabled to entitle e Third Prize in e Competition The M. Elaine de Temple Prize in memory of a long-standing member of e Branch who died recently. The total cost of e Essay Competition Project will be approximately $6,500, as approved in e 2012 Budget proposed to e Branch s Annual General Meeting on April 11, We still have some way to go to meet ose costs, and any furer assistance at Branch members can give us will be greatly appreciated.
