3 Dearly beloved in Christ, The tradition about Holy Qurbana says that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which he was betrayed took bread he broke it and said Take, eat; this is my body He also took the cup after supper, saying This cup is the new covenant in my blood For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup you proclaim the Lord s death till he comes. 1 Cor. 11: Holy Qurbana has its etymological root in the Hebrew word korban means sacrifice. A sacrifice offered to God brings the worshipper closer to God just as the word connotes. The qurbana that we celebrate therefore refers to: 1. The instance taken place at the upper room just before Jesus death; 2. The very death (sacrifice) of Christ on the cross; 3. The ritual observed by the Christian churches to maintain the dynamic memory of Jesus and to accomplish his mission by totally identifying with him. By the means of qurbana we have the remission of our sins and the closest possible unity with Christ. To be part of the qurbana is the proud privilege of every Christian on the one hand and an inescapable commitment to fulfill his will on the other. Often times we reduce this to a mere ritual or an exclusive luxury for the church. We fight over the patterns, music, rubrics and traditions and risk the loss of its meaning and effect. Let us thank God for this great sacrifice that makes the sinner righteous and that makes us members in Christ s body. Let us reaffirm our commitment to live the life expected of a member in His body. It s a matter of great joy and excitement for us a parish that one of our children getting ordained as priest to serve the Lord through the church. Dn. Jess M George will be ordained God willing on 5 th August at our church. The parish, just like the family has enormous influence on its members with regard to their spiritual moulding. I do appreciate the parents and brother of Dn. Jess for encouraging to pursue his call and be supportive during the study period. I also appreciate and thank God for all the members of this community, who have inspired, encouraged and prayed for him. Now we all have a great responsibility to pray for this our son so that he could render exemplary service to the Lord through the church. We are half way through with regard to the scheduled programs for summer. Still many major meetings at the Diocesan and regional levels are yet to take place. Please uphold the conferences, meetings and activities in your prayers. It was highly anticipated to begin our construction work at least by mid July but we are forced to tarry due to unexpected practical obstacles. But our committee members are working hard to get it started at the earliest. I earnestly request all of you to pray for our project in your family prayers and give physical and moral support to those who are working for us. I am pretty sure that God cannot make mistakes and that He makes all things beautiful in His time. In the Lord s ministry Rev. 4 ASSISTANT VICAR S MESSAGE Sacrament of Holy Qurbana: Celebration of Salvation A Sacrament is a visible means of experiencing the invisible Grace of God. The Holy Qurbana is a sacrament instituted by the Lord Jesus at the Last Supper he had with his disciples. It is considered as the Queen of Sacraments and it comes under the Dominical Sacraments. It is a symbolic act of appropriating God s grace into our lives and it should be continued until the second coming of Jesus Christ. The meaning of Qurbana is offering or sacrifice. It reminds us the God s offering of His son Jesus Christ to die on the Cross for the salvation of the humankind. So as we participate in the Holy Qurbana it becomes the celebration of Salvation and also our submission to God as an offering for His divine purpose. It includes the confession of our sins for the renewal of fellowship with God and with fellow believers. So Prayer of Confession is a must before participating in the Holy Qurbana. It is the Lord who is inviting us to His table. As we participate in the Holy Qurbana we remember the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ and assurance of the forgiveness of our sin. We give thanks to God for redeeming us in Jesus Christ. St. John Chrysostom said, Jesus gave you all, and left nothing for Himself. Let us come to our Lord s Table remembering all that He has done for us and celebrate the salvation experience so that we can live new lives in Christ for witness and service in the world. Mathew 26:26 Holy Qurbana is a dominical sacrament. This is sanctioned by our Lord Jesus Christ and is needed to all Christians. The meaning of the Latin word "Domino" is the Lord. During last supper, Jesus ate the bread and drank the wine of the Passover and gave them to His disciples. "Take, eat and drink". This command forms the words of the institution of the Holy Qurbana. In Qurbana the Christian believers enter into a communion with Christ as well as with one another. Therefore it is called Holy Communion. This is also known as Lord's Supper. Holy Communion is a sacrament of meaningful fellowship and boundless spiritual and Holistic remembrance. It is an Parish Messenger August - September Page 4

5 institution of giving himself as symbol of giving His whole life. Holy Communion is a remembrance and it is a New Covenant. When the Jews sat for the Passover meal, the Head of the family used to say that it was the bread of suffering which their forefathers ate at the time of their exodus from Egypt. (Exodus 13:3-10) But Jesus added a new meaning to it, as self offering for the sins of the world. The word of institution (consecration) in the liturgy "when the sinless one, of His own will, chose to suffer death for us sinners, He took bread in His holy hands. He gave thanks, blessed broke it and gave it to His Apostles saying "Take, eat, this is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." Hence it is a remembrance of the deliverance from bondage of sin. It is God's intervention in history to redeem us. We remember God's love and sharing His life, this we appropriate through faith and hope. Here Christ is the host (Luke 24:35). He is known in the breaking of the bread. In the same manner He took the cup. He gave thanks, blessed. "This is my blood of the New Covenant shed for many for the forgiveness of sins. In exodus 24:4-8, we see the background. Moses sacrificed a bull, and sprinkled half of the blood on the people and made a covenant wit the people. "This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you." In New Testament the blood is not the bulls or goats, but it is the blood of Jesus. He is the lamb of God that took away the sins of the world." In the Holy Communion the three great themes of human religious aspirations are fulfilled. That is Reconciliation, Offering and Communion. Thank you and God bless you!
