3 From the Vicar s Desk Dearly beloved in Christ, First of all, It gives us great pleasure in wishing you all a Blessed & Grace-filled New Year in the name of the Almighty from whom all blessings come. There is an old saying which goes, Don t cry, because it is over; smile it happened. A new year is a time for new beginnings. It is time to start anew and do things which could make another soul smile. Before we enter into the New Year, God invites us to forget about all the distrust and fear, all the anxieties of the past, all the resentments we have been holding against others, all the criticism, to put them away and begin anew. This New Year gives us an opportunity for a new beginning not only as individuals, but as a family, a church, and a community. A familiar year has passed out, and an unknown future is approaching us. One thing we can be certain about the coming year is that the Lord is ahead of us. Our future is in His strong and caring hands. Remember, I will be with you and protect you wherever you go (Gen 28:15). The God who is the alpha and omega, the Lord who is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow and whose kingdom is going to last forever will be our rock and refuge in the New Year. In January, the church celebrates Epiphany. Epiphany means shining forth or manifestation of our God. God s glory was revealed to us through his son s birth, now it s time to witness God s glory in this world. So, Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you (Isa 60:1). In the early centuries, the feasts of Nativity and Epiphany were celebrated jointly on January sixth. There was only one feast of the Denho, which includes Nativity and Epiphany in the Eastern Church. The incarnation of the Divine Word and the baptism of our Lord, which he received from St. John the Baptist, were used to be commemorated together for a long time in the Church. According to the current practice of our Church, we celebrate those feasts separately. Being the Vicars of the Immanuel Mar Thoma Parish, we are grateful to our 2018 office bearers and executive committee members for their devoted and sacrificial services. Mr. Abraham Varghese, Mr. M.A. Varughese, Mr. Thomas Mathew, Mr. Binu Pappachen, Mr. Saji John & Mr. Jim Thomas deserves special appreciation. We were delighted to welcome the newly elected office bearers and committee members. May God bless you to continue His Mission faithfully and diligently. Our dear Saji Achen had a frightening car accident during our House to House Caroling. We experienced God s miraculous hands. We just had to give thanks to God for His protection. Because of the severe collision, the car was damaged completely, but Achen, his elder son Johan and Melvin were wonderfully protected by the almighty. We urge your continued support and prayers. Let us be united and strive for the extension of God s Kingdom. Mr. Oommen Jose, 67 years old, Brother-in-Law of Mr. K. K. John, ID 113 of Carmel Prayer Group and Uncle of Mrs. Bettina Manoj Raju, ID 586 of Tabor Prayer Group was taken into Heavenly Abode at Oklahoma. Mrs. Achiamma Thankachan, 78 years old, Sister of our Parish Member Mr. John Chacko, ID 177 of Horeb Prayer Group was taken into Heavenly Abode on December 18th at Kottarakara, Kerala. 9 LITURGICAL YEAR Season of Great Lent: Great-lent is the time of His Public Ministry; refers around the three and a half years that He ministered many those who believed in Him. The third period of the Liturgical Year is called as Great Lent Period; starts from Kothne-Sunday (Intervention of Jesus at the house of Cana) and ends with Gospel Saturday(After resurrection). The Great Lent period has two parts, namely, the Forty days of Lent ends on 40th Friday and then comes Lazarus -Saturday, Palm- Sunday which is followed by the Holy-Week. The theme of the Lenten Season is the redemptive Work of our Lord including His death on the Cross for the redemption of the humanity. In all seven Sundays and the following weekdays, the Church remembers the signs, symbols and wonders that He did for us in order to save us from the bondage of evil forces and to cure us well to witness and take part in His Passion, Death and Resurrection. Thus we meditate from the first sign He did at the marriage Feast of Cana, turning water into wine, to the last, rising Lazarus from the dead before He entered to Jerusalem for His final Passion and Death on the Cross. The Fathers of the Church arranged this period as a period of total repentance with fasting and abstinence, prostration and special prayer services, namely Lenten Prayers and Prayers for the Holy Week. Season of Resurrection: Feast of Resurrection to the Feast of Pentecost refers the time that our Lour being with us as Resurrected Being and Presence; covers the forty days till His ascension and the ten days that the Apostles and believers awaited for the Holy Spirit. It commemorates the mystery of the resurrection as the foretaste of our own participation in the risen glory of Christ in heaven. There are forty days between the Resurrection and Ascension. In those days the Disciples of Christ saw Him and He assured them of the blessed Resurrection that was sought by all the children of Adam. Through His resurrection and ascension, He guaranteed all the righteous the entry into the eternal communion with Him. Christ s descent down to the earth was in order to cause the human being to ascend to his kingdom. Through the renewal the human being can enter into the Paradise like First Adam who was there before the fall. Season of Pentecost: Pentecost to the Feast of Transfiguration refers the time of the Growth of the Church through the propagation of the Gospel by the Apostles, Prophets, Martyrs and holy Fathers of the Church. It celebrates the mystery of the power of the Holy Spirit worked upon the Apostles at the Pentecost. During the period the church recalled the Apostles and their disciples whom were going around teaching all people and establishing the Church in the Pentecost the, Birthday and Baptism of the Church. During this liturgical season, the Church commemorates the Apostles, their zeal for evangelization and sufferings and martyrdom through the Apostle- fast. The thirteen days Apostle-fast is on behalf of the twelve Apostle, of our Lord excluding Judas Iscariot and including Mathias, and St. Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles. The Apostle-fast begins on 16th June every year and ends on the Feast of the commemoration of St. Peter and St. Paul on 29th of June. Though other Apostles were killed in different dates and having their commemorations as well on those dates, however, the Church celebrates the Feast of All the Apostle together on 30th June as well. whole world. On the 50th day of his resurrection the Church acknowledges his promise of the Spirit, the Paraclete, who descended upon the apostles (Acts 2:1-4) and they preached the good news in diverse languages. Please fulfill your commitment by paying $20 / month or $240/year as early as possible. Thank you for your past and continuous support on this project. CHURCH OPENED FOR PERSONAL MEDITATION & PRAYER Our Church Sanctuary will be opened every Tuesdays from 9:00am to 1:00pm for personal meditation and prayer. Achens will be available at the Church during this time. I thank our Good Lord for His Grace that was bestowed upon us during our House to House Carol this year. The very talented and dedicated group of Singing Leaders Mr. Manosh Thomas, Mr. Mohan John Thomas, Mr. John K. Philip and Mr. Aju Abraham John, the untiring team of Instrument leaders Mr. Joji John, Mr. Sam Alexander, Mr. Vinu Jacob, Mr. Sajeev G. Kutty, Mr. Johnson Varghese and beloved Abhigith along with the marvelous and energetic group of singers did an excellent job, keeping the House to House Caroling so live and energetic. The able Leadership of the coordinator, our Vice president Mr. Abraham P. Varghese and the Area Representatives are highly commendable. The enthusiasm of our little children and their participation in singing needs special mention and are praiseworthy. Thanks to our Van Drivers Mr. Mathews Varghese, Mr. John Varghese and Mr. Thomas Thyparambil. Thanks to Mr. Johnson Varghese for the Videos and Photography. Our sincere thanks to Binju Kochamma, Mr. T. I. Rajan, Mr. John Varghese, Mr. Rajan Daniel and Dr. Sam Joseph who proclaimed our Lord s Birth thru Bible Verses. Very Many Thanks to one and all who participated in this year s House to House caroling enjoying the great fellowship. Mathew whose talent was once again displayed in the designing and printing of this year s Christmas Song Book.
