CHAPLAINS MESSAGE Deacon Dave Ludwikoski, PGK Assistant to the Chaplain My Brother Knights and Lovely Ladies: Hopefully, all of the May showers will bring June flowers, warmer, drier weather, and a chance for families to spend time together. June is traditionally the most popular month for weddings and graduations. It s also the time when summer vacations begin and kids are out of school. While we take the time to relax, travel, and spend time with friends and family, let s not take a vacation from God. Here s one idea. One of the most fun and interesting things my wife and I find when travelling is finding Catholic churches to visit: not only for Sunday Mass, but for the local cultural experience, especially if the opportunity presents itself to attend daily Mass. It s a way to really get to know the people in a community, especially if you plan to spend a few days in the area. We were visiting Block Island, RI a few years ago, and went to the neighborhood church for morning Mass. We found it closed, but then a couple drove up in an SUV, asked if we were looking for Mass, and happily drove us to the OTHER church on the island that was having daily Mass. It was just a dozen special people and the priest! So, while we re re-creating, let s take a few minutes each and every day to thank the One who created us, sustains us, and give us hope for eternal life. Thank Him for all of our blessings, and thank Him, too, for the challenges and hardships (yes, even the rain!), for he wants us to turn to Him for everything in our life, whether great or small. May God bless you and keep you safe, happy, and healthy. Supreme Chaplain s Message Archbishop William Lori From time to time any one of us may feel empty, alone, and isolated. Now and again the hardships and stress of life may get to us; and sometimes it s hard to maintain relationships with others and not become absorbed by our own worries, problems and needs. If you ve ever been there and I ll tell you right now that I ve been there then we should take a second look at the feast of Corpus Christi. This feast of the Lord s Body and Blood offers us three messages that address head on 1) our feelings of isolation and emptiness 2) our daily burdens and stress, and 3) our tendency to turn in upon ourselves a word about each. What does Jesus ask of us? Not five loaves and two fish but only a little bread and wine such as the high priest Melchizedek presented to Abram. This small offering becomes, not earthly food and drink, but the rather the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus by which we are superabundantly nourished, in the depth of our hearts. And this generosity is multiplied over and over again, every time Mass is celebrated. From this divine abundance, we derive the inner strength, the divine grace we need, to break away from a self-centered way of life, from all forms of stinginess, and instead to embrace a way of life that is generous and loving, that seeks to give glory to God by serving the needs of those around us, especially those who are poor, sick, and vulnerable. Fed by the abundant charity of Christ who loves us more than we ask or imagine, we in turn share that abundance with those around us as we strengthen relationships at home and at work, treat one another with courtesy and consideration, and seek to build up and strengthen the Church, the Body of Christ. So, as we celebrate Corpus Christi, the Solemnity of the Lord s Body and Blood, let us give the Lord thanks and praise, let us adore him in the Blessed Sacrament, and lay before him our emptiness, our pain, our self-centeredness confident that he will transform those very human realities into a joy and a peace that the world cannot give. O Sacrament Most Holy, O Sacrament Divine! All praise and all thanksgiving, be every moment Thine! 4 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

GRAND KNIGHT S REPORT Grand Knight Scott Luco Dear Brothers, it has been a pleasure to serve you as Grand Knight for the past two years. I hope I have left the Council in better shape than when I started! I will leave with one Big Thank You to everyone in the Council for all of the help you have given me. I believe we are on a good growth curve, with nearly forty new members added in the past two years, and many of you are getting active in programs and leadership roles already! That is what we need to strengthen our Council for our Parish and our Community. Congratulations to all of our newly elected Officers! I wish you all the best in the coming Fraternal Year, and you can be sure that I will be right here to help out and offer my free advice that of course is worth every penny you pay for it. May started off strong with our Fabulous 50 s Dance and Flea Market, both chaired by John Reardon. Thanks to John and his teams of helpers for two great events. They were very different in terms of the service they provided, but each was fun and successful in raising funds for our programs. The State Convention was a big success, as we took home second place for our recruiting efforts and first place for our Fr. Leo Council Report! These awards were just two of the many we bought home and that are a testament to all of the hard work you Brothers put in for Patapsco Council. Thanks to Worthy Grand Chef Mike Karpers for leading the way with food preparation for the District 17 Hospitality Room once again. Congratulations to new Brothers Gary Greggs, Joe Kline, Erik Shilling, Rick Sipes, Mark Tully, and Ray Wheltle. We exemplified both the Admissions and Formations Degree to them on May 17. Please welcome them to the Council next time you see them. Congratulations also to Brother Bill Lorenz who took the Formation Degree. In taking the Formation Degree, all seven Brothers are eligible for the Knighthood Degree to be conferred right here at Patapsco Friday June 3. The Degree begins at 7:30; please plan to attend to support your Brother Knights as they advance to Full Knighthood in our Order. We still need ten more new members in order to repeat as Star Council this year, so keep recruiting! Bring in a completed form 100 as soon as possible in order to have your candidate be interviewed, voted on and attend a degree in June. Get a Form 100 in front of your Catholic friend and sign him up! Do it today, and you and he will enjoy the benefits of Brotherhood for a lifetime. Vivat Jesus! 5 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT S REPORT Deputy Grand Knight Bernie Wrisk Oh what a joy it is to finally have some dry, warm, and even hot days already after so many cool rainy days. Summer is here and we welcome it heartily. With this time of year comes many graduations and weddings and therefore new beginnings. Let us give thanks to our Lord for these wonderful momments in life and ask for His wisdom and guidance as we move forward. It was a joy for me to attend the State Convention down the Ocean and celebrate the many honors that were bestowed upon our council for our past year s efforts. We are a large, strong, thriving, active council that is a great example to many in our community and amongst our brotherhood across our state. I am also very honored that this will be my last time giving a note as DGK as I have been elected to take my next role in our great council as Grand Knight. I look forward to this super challenge, especially following the great example that our current Grand Knight has provided us for the past two years. Vivat Jesus! CHANCELLOR S REPORT John Journell There have been a few more people showing up lately at our Council business meetings, and that is a good thing to see. We need more participation, and it all starts with simply showing up the rest takes care of itself. Let s remind ourselves that we need to keep our new Brothers under our wing and assist them through the activities of our Order. Let s keep encouraging participation at Council meetings, provide guidance on how to participate in our charitable events, and make them aware of the key points of contact, which can be somewhat daunting to a new member. And let s get our Brothers through their degrees. Let s make it a goal to get our brothers through the Third Degree, now referred to as the Knighthood Degree. And, if at all possible, let s challenge ourselves to get as many as we can into the Fourth Degree, our Patriotic Degree. As our Grand Knight likes to point out, those who attain the Fourth Degree tend to stay active and involved in charitable activities for life. Jesus did not just recruit His Apostles and leave them up to their own devices; he taught, led by example, and encouraged them. As we finish the Easter season, for all that this season implies for our faith, it would also do us well to remember our new Brothers, and especially ones who we have sponsored, and follow our Lord s example by reaching out to teach them how to follow in our own footsteps for the Knights of Columbus. Vivat Jesus! 6 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

PROGRAM DIRECTOR S REPORT PGK Barry Casanova Brothers and Patapsco Council family: WOW, what an exciting Maryland State Council Convention! The State Council Leadership election had seven candidates for State Warden, some exciting controversy with Resolutions, and quite a haul of awards for Patapsco Council. Highest congratulations and accolades go to the active members and leadership of this Council who put us in the top tier of award winners. I think I counted thirteen Awards that we won in a variety of categories. We did especially well with many members of the Degree Teams individually as well as recognition for the teams as a whole. Our Lecturer s program and great PK newsletter where recognized. As to the Surge for Service programs, I was initially frankly disappointed since I thought we had some outstanding reports until the end of the award programs when GK Scott was called to the podium and presented a First Place Plaque for the Dinner with Father Leo, a Council Activity Report, which will go on to compete internationally at the Supreme Council Convention in Toronto, Canada, later this summer. I think this is the most awards Patapsco has taken since the Columbian year. Like the thrill of getting Star Council last year after about a fifteen years wait, it was sweet to hear Patapsco Council 1960 and GK Scott s name repeated called from the podium. I have been kidding him that Now everybody knows your name! Congratulations to Tony Salvemini who was elected State Warden as well as the other State Officers who were re-elected to the next higher chairs. By the time this is published, the Council will also have had its elections for leadership in the next Columbian year. Congratulations to all those winners. You have a challenge: Do as well as this past year. To the Officers, Directors, Chairmen, Brothers and supporters who were active in all of our programs and those Brothers and families who supported and enjoyed Council activities, a profound thank you must go out to you who made this one of the most successful years Patapsco Council has seen in many years. My admiration and special thanks to outgoing Grand (soon to be Past ) Sir Knight Scott Luco and his supporting Lady Anne for a remarkable job showing the leadership to motivate, galvanize, and mobilize the Brothers of this Council to achieve another wonderful year. Indeed, only one matter is outstanding--will we get Star Council two years in a row? We are close; thirty days to go. It is a very difficult job for a large and mature A Class Council to achieve. We have to go back decades to find when that last happened. Star Council or not, what a year! Great job. Look for a full summer of activities including Crabs. Congratulations to our new Brothers, please stay active. Old or new Brothers, follow your interest it is YOUR Council. Thanks for the privilege of serving you this past year as Advocate, Council Delegate and Programs Director. Keep up the prayers for those threatened with religious violence worldwide and our men and women in uniform. Mary, Queen of Knights, pray for us. A MOVIE THAT IS MORE THAN A MOVIE Co-Editor Tim McCarthy There are two reasons that every Catholic family should consider watching the movie, GOD S NOT DEAD. First: It is a powerful underdog story in which a college freshman does battle with a tenured philosophy professor who is an atheist. To pass the class, the student must convince his peers that God DOES exist. With the teacher serving as judge the class serves as a jury. How will this play out? Second: Woven into the story is an original application of the Big Bang Theory. To follow this sophisticated presentation, I had to watch the film several times and click to those sections that presented Big Bang. In light of today s science, is it possible that Charles Darwin, in his own words, refutes his own theory? 7 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

My presence is a gift from God for all of you and an encouragement for conversion. Satan is strong and wants to put disorder and unrest in your hearts and thoughts. Therefore, you, little children, pray so that the Holy Spirit may lead you on the real way of joy and peace. I am with you and intercede before my Son for you. Thank you for having responded to my call. 10 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

Knights Out Inn JUNE SPECIALS June 3 Closed for 3rd degree June 10 Fried Chicken June 17 Shrimp Creole June 24 Fried Soft Crab In addition to our specials, we serve a regular menu of crab cakes, chicken tenders, shrimp salad, fried shrimp, cheese steak subs, and rib eye steaks. All meals are served with delicious sides and salads. Please come and join us for a great evening of fraternity and family fun. BEAUMONT NEWS John Reardon, Beaumont Holding Company House Manager Every Friday night, the Council home provides a dining spot for our Brothers and guests known as the Knights Out Inn. On average, we get 35 to 50 visitors every Friday, so the work involved is substantial. The work involved in running the Knights Out Inn is as follows: 1) buying the food; 2) loading and unloading the truck transporting the food; 3) storing the food; 4) cooking the food; 5) serving the food; 6) cleaning up after the meal. Running the Knights Out Inn is a task that continues to fall upon the same few members, whose average age is almost 70 years old. Simply put, we need our younger members to join in the effort and help on Friday nights. Additionally, we need the younger Brothers to help us maintain our building. We know our younger members have families, and responsibilities that go with these families, but we hope that some could help at least a couple of days a month. We look forward to seeing you at the Knights Out Inn on Fridays, not just as guests, but as volunteers. May God bless all our Brother Knights. 11 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

FAMILY OF THE MONTH In lieu of one family this month our council recognizes all families that celebrated a child graduating from high school. Achieving this accomplishment surely can be viewed as a team effort with all of the teenage challenges you must face. Give praises to God for the patience, endurance, and perseverance He granted to you and your family. Going forward our council could use a new chairman of this worthy effort to continue giving some positive recognition to the loving, nurturing, faithful families in our community. If interested, in helping, please contact your DGK Bernie Wrisk at bwrisk@verizon.net or Please remember the following people in your prayers. Paul Boettinger PGK Bob Carhart PGK Ed Canter John Lackey Patricia Johnson Tina Welzant Ellis Emil Glueck Jr. Norman Sanford Edith M. Sullivan Charlie Meyers Mary West The family of Thomas Walsh If you have any prayer intentions for someone in your family, please contact Chancellor John Journell to get the person s name included in our prayers. You may also fill out a prayer request form on our Council website. We believe in the power of prayer and would be happy to include your family members in our prayers. You can send your prayer requests to John via at chancellor1960@gmail.com. 12 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

SUPREME COUNCIL NEWS SPECIAL OLYMPICS FEATURED UNIFIED GAMES HELD IN ROME The Knights of Columbus hosted a unique Special Olympics event, May 20-22, at the Pius XI Field in Rome that featured eight teams composed of players with and without intellectual disabilities. Part of the Special Olympics European Football Week, the event was designed to break down barriers and offer a model for how communities can include people with intellectual disabilities. Representing the Knights of Columbus at the games was Deputy Supreme Knight Logan Ludwig. The tournament, co-sponsored by the Knights and the Italian Football Association, included four teams from Italy and one team each from France, Lithuania, Poland and Hungary. Players ranged in age from 18 to 30. The Knights of Columbus has been a supporter of Special Olympics since the very first games were held nearly half a century ago. Both in the United States and abroad, we have been strong supporters of these games and their clear message of human dignity, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. It is particularly fitting that this year Special Olympics games will be held on our fields in Rome, since these fields have been at the service of the people of Rome and their children for nearly a century. The Knights of Columbus have been generously supporting Special Olympics athletes not just in the USA, said Tim Shriver, chairman of Special Olympics International, who cited the Knights for their work JUNE MESSAGE across Italy, Europe and the rest of the world. The K of C has been a partner of Special Olympics since the first games were held in 1968, with Knights supporting the organization at the local, national and international levels. The Knights donated $1.4 million to the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles last year and $1 million to support the World Games in Ireland in The Knights of Columbus has run athletic fields in Rome since the 1920s, when the organization was asked to do so by Pope Benedict XV. The Pius XI athletic facility which was used for the Special Olympics games this week was originally constructed in the 1920s and is located adjacent to St. Peter s Basilica. It was from this facility that the Vatican ran its humanitarian food operations for the people of Rome during World War II. Following the war, the facility was also used by the Allies for food distribution to the children of Rome. In the 1960s, the Knights donated the land to the Vatican for the construction of the Paul VI Audience Hall. The athletic facility was then moved to its current location. STATE COUNCIL NEWS Stephen M. Cohen, State Deputy, Maryland Knights of Columbus My Brothers All, here we are in the month of June. Soon summer will be here. Remember, we just keep moving, do not stop and restart because we are in a new fraternal year. Continue recruiting, continue to have Admission degrees and continue to do good work in our Parishes. The State Convention was a great success. My sincere thanks to all who played a role in making it happen. My thanks also to all who attended. This has been our largest convention in many years. Congratulations goes out to all of our Award Winners, they can be seen in the State Newsletter. Building the Domestic Church: While strengthening our Parish continues to be in the forefront. The State is planning a large State Sponsored Event for this program. Each council should be following the recommendations in Columbia magazine and Knightline for sponsoring events in your parish. This is our New Initiative and one in which our Holy Father truly believes. Continue to work with your Pastors to implement programs in this area. I would like to take this opportunity to thank a GREAT TEAM, who made this year the success that it was. Everyone chipped in and made this a great Columbian Year for the Jurisdiction of Maryland. Hopefully, when the end of the month comes, We can say that the Great State of Maryland is again in the Supreme Knight s Circle of Honor. Remember, this only takes each council bringing in two new members before June 28th. Remember Always, We are the Knights of Columbus, We are a People of Life, For Life, Building a Civilization of Love. Vivat Jesus! 13 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

BALTIMORE CHAPTER OF GRAND KNIGHTS JUNE 2016 SCHEDULE The next meeting will take place on Thursday, June 9th, 2016, at 8:00 pm at Dundalk Council #2942 (Election Night). For more information, visit FRATERNAL BENEFITS NEWS KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NAMED A 2016 WORLD S MOST ETHICAL COMPANY The Knights of Columbus has been recognized as a 2016 World s Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institute for the third consecutive year. The World s Most Ethical Companies designation recognizes companies that align principle with action and work tirelessly to make trust a part of their corporate structure. Such companies help shape future industry standards by introducing tomorrow s best practices today. The Knights of Columbus is one of only two awardees in the life insurance category, underscoring the Knights commitment to leading ethical business standards and practices. This commitment will continue, as we promise to abide by principles in keeping with Catholic values, particularly through ethical selling, ethical business and ethical investing. Ethical Selling We professionally train our agents and rigorously hold them to the highest ethical standards. When contracted, each agent must sign a Code of Ethics, which is modeled after the Ten Commandments. When signing the code, agents commit to present, honestly and accurately, all the facts necessary to enable a member to make an informed decision. Our fraternal ties to our members, the code states, make it more incumbent on us, in our dealings with them, to assure that their interests are utmost in our minds as we provide solutions to their financial needs. Ethical Business The Knights of Columbus is committed to ethical business practices. We firmly believe that these practices have contributed to our business success and helped us to be consistently awarded the highest possible rating for financial strength from ratings agency A.M. Best. We also make guarantees to our members and their families, so they do not have to wonder about the decision to do business with us. We guarantee the cash value in our whole life insurance products. We guarantee the rates on our level term insurance. And we guarantee a minimum interest rate on our retirement annuities. Ethical Investing Our investment strategy is both safe and Catholic-based. We will not purchase junk bonds. We will not purchase derivatives. We will not invest in companies that deal in abortion, contraception, human cloning, embryonic stem cell research, for-profit healthcare that pays for any of the aforementioned, and pornography. The World s Most Ethical Company assessment is based on the Ethisphere Institute s Ethics Quotient (EQ) framework, developed over years of research and vetted and refined by the expert advice from Ethisphere s World s Most Ethical Company Methodology Advisory Panel. The EQ offers a quantitative way to assess a company s performance in an objective, consistent and standardized way. Those that demonstrate leadership in areas like citizenship, integrity and transparency create more value for their investors, communities, customers and employees, thus solidifying a sustainable business advantage, said Ethisphere CEO Timothy Erblich. We are honored that the Ethisphere Institute has again acknowledged our commitment. It is this commitment that makes doing business with the Knights of Columbus truly different.
