Summer is flying by way to quickly!! Secondly, I can t quite believe that I now find myself as the Grand Knight of the best Knights of Columbus Council in Marylandand I m somewhat in awe. I have served under some outstanding Grand Knights, and to say that I ve often worried whether I will measure up or not would be an understatement. But on the other hand, I believe that we have an outstanding chair of younger officers to support me and I couldn t be more confident in our future. We have some challenges that we will have no choice but to tackle, but we will also have a lot of fun as we prepare for, and go through, our Centennial Year, beginning this coming January. This is one of the best times to be a Grand Knight in our Council and I couldn t be more thrilled to be here, even if it does scare me a little! I will not dwell on our challenges for now, but I do ask each of you to make an effort to at least attend each business meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. That s one hour a month for your Council plus food. We will need the help of everybody in our Council, so if you ve been inactive for some time, now is the perfect time to get back involved, trust me. I honestly believe that the coming months are ones that you will not want to miss out on. I want to thank PGK Warren Norris, PGK/DD Scott Luco, and PGK Bernie Wrisk, all of whom I ve served under in the Council, for all of their council, wisdom, and advice, and leadership. PGK Norris is always at the Council and is the perfect expression of leadership by example in the Knights of Columbus. DD Scott Luco and PGK Bernie Wrisk were my Grand Knights as I rotated through the chairs and I can t begin to express my gratitude to both of them, as it was through them that I was introduced to, and got to experience, the inner workings of a Council as they did their best to prepare me for my own term as Grand Knight. I would like to express my gratitude to all of the other Past Grand Knights, Council Officers, and those who lead various programs and volunteer countless hours to running our Council and events. I won t list your names because I would inadvertently leave someone out, but you know who you are, and I want you to know that I appreciate your wise council, your support, and most importantly, your confidence in me to be at the helm of a this great council that you all have put so much sweat into and have cherished so much for so long. I also want to thank Robert Carter and John Hart as they become our new Deputy Grand Knight and Chancellor, respectively. They each have a growing family and other demands on their time, and yet they are both stepping forward to serve our Council as Chair Officers. I know from experience that rotating through the Chairs is a very rewarding experience, but it is not an easy one. Yet they have committed themselves to serve our Council as, what I see, a core of younger members with great ideas and skills who will guide our historic Council into and through our second century. One final note, our Installation of Officers will be held at the St. Mark Chapel on July 18th. Our District Deputy requests that all officers assemble at 6:30 PM and Mass will begin at 7:00. The Mass and Officer Installation will be followed by refreshments at the Council Home. Mass will be officiated by Fr Okeke. 2 P A G E 2 Knights Out Inn July Menu ~~ I joined the Knights of Columbus a little over 10 years ago despite my long history of attending Council-related events with my father, Hugh W. Carter, Jr., a long-time member of the Homeland Council. It was through these childhood experiences and memories that kept me drawn towards the Knights of Columbus. July 6 Seafood Platter July13 Salad Night July 20 Fried Chicken July 27 Hot Dogs & Hamburgers Culture of Life Years ago I was a reporter for the Baltimore Sun. One night I called in the story of a suicide and was told, "Unless the deceased is a prominent person we won't do a story. We've noticed that when we report suicides the number of suicides tends to increase." This sequence seems to be playing out now as well known celebrities take their lives. Suicides are on the increase. Such actions may be propelled by mental illness, substance abuse, financial hardship or relationship problems. How can we help? Should you find yourself talking to such a potential victim the best approach is not, "It's not really so bad." That message simply cannot be received by your listener. Of course you want someone calling the police while you engage your caller. But while you wait, the question most likely to help is, "Who would Deputy Grand Knight Report Brothers, As June comes to a close, July 1 starts a new fraternal year; and with this comes a slight change in Officers. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you as Deputy Grand Knight For the upcoming for fraternal year. I d like to take this opportunity to better introduce myself to you. But it wasn t until we moved to North East, Pennsylvania (Erie) to care for my in-laws so that they could die at home before becoming a 1st Degree knight at the suggestion of my brot her-in-law, Charles Moore, with the Saint Alphonsus Ligouri Council. It was at that council where I obtained my 2nd and 3rd degrees. Once we moved back to Baltimore, it was then Grand Knight Scott Luco who welcomed me to the Patapsco Council. During my past several years at Patapsco, I obtained my 4th Degree with the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Assembly. After a rather exciting experience as your Worthy Recorder this past year, I now have the pleasure of serving you as Deputy Grand Knight. Along with the responsibilities of being Deputy Grand Knight, I ll also serve as the Council s Program Director. You will be seeing more about upcoming programs in future newsletters however, please take a moment to look at what is coming up in the next month or two as I d prefer to have those members most interested in those programs help ensure they are successful for the Council. be upset most if they heard of your passing"? If you get a specific answer you know who needs to take your place on the phone. Get the person identified on the scene as quickly as you can. The national suicide hotline number is Tim McCarthy Moving forward, I also ask each of you to think about what you would like to accomplish with the programs we offer, as well as thinking about the realistic and achievable goals with those programs. I ll offer my humble vision at the next business meeting; but I welcome your constructive feedback as it is the collectiveness of our Council members that ensures our ongoing success and reputation with the church and the community. 3 V O L U M E 1 8 I S S U E 7 P A G E 3 Council Program Seminars To aid you in preparation for the new fraternal year, the Maryland State Council will conduct program seminars on the dates and at the locations noted below. The purpose of these seminars is to inform council directors and chairmen about the State Council sponsored programs that can be used to supplement their own favorites, as well as to offer suggestions and advice to assist councils with their Faith in Action programs. These seminars also provide the opportunity for the free exchange of ideas and concerns among councils, and with the State Team. A listing of the seminars, assigned by location for each council, is attached. We all have common program and membership goals, and a desire to see every council SUCCEED. Those council members requested to attend are the program and membership directors; Faith, Family, Community and Life activity directors; recruitment and retention chairmen; intellectually disabled (Tootsie Roll), incentive program (car raffle), charity fund, and Admission degree chairmen; and lecturer. The ladies auxiliary president and officers are also invited to attend. We encourage all council officers to attend the appropriate seminar. The Regional Advisors, District Deputies and District Wardens for the councils listed as well as the Grand Knights and Chair Officers are expected to attend. If any council director, chairman or officer cannot attend their assigned seminar, please select an alternate to attend. If a council decides to attend a different workshop, please let your District Deputy know so that he can make arrangements for your information to be at the alternate workshop. 4 Patapsco Council Degree Team The Patapsco Degree Team hosts a number of Degrees throughout the year. We are in need of a few Brothers to help by taking a speaking role in the Degrees. This is a significant role within our Order and your participation is important in welcoming Catholic Gentlemen to the Knights of Columbus. Consider becoming active in our Degree Team. Contact ~ Brother Knight Tony Viscardi or afviscardi@verizon.net "Should I take some chips off the table?" No one knows this answer...it's an individual preference. But we can tell you that it is prudent to manage your risk as you get older and that guarantees play a large part in our financial and emotion peace of mind. This is what the Knights of Columbus do so well...we provide guarantees that allow you to not worry what the world around you is doing. You don't have to be glued to CNBC or worry about what the guys at the diner are saying. Another factor to consider gentlemen, our wives and our families. As Catholic men, fathers and in many cases breadwinners we have a responsibility to take care of our loved ones. Part of that responsibility is to proper risk management. What items fall into risk management? 1. Adequate life insurance 2. Long term care insurance 3. Safety of principal for your 401K, IRA, TSP, etc. 4. Adequate homeowners and car coverage 5. Umbrella liability coverage (it's a litigious world out there) 6. Making sure your legal work is up to date 7. Disability Income insurance if your employer doesn't provide it or if it isn't adequate 8. Annually reviewing all of the above I am happy to assist you with the above. "Brother Knight caring for Brother Knight they aren't just nice words to me. MICHAEL DUFFY (FA) Michael.duffy@kofc.org

In this webinar we will help you: Understand the various roles and administrative responsibilities of council officers Incorporate teamwork into committee operation Build a fraternal calendar that works Register today to listen live or take advantage of listening on demand! Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Assembly normally meets the fourth Thursday of the month at Stafford Hall (St Agnes Council home) 2021 Frederick Rd Catonsville. the evening will start with a Mass by Fr Lacey at 6:30 pm, followed by dinner, which will then be followed by the regular meeting at 8 pm. Do you know a Catholic Gentleman? Have you asked him to become a Knight? What are you waiting for?

6 July Theme Witnessing to the Faith Because families play an indispensable role in the new evangelization, we want to share our faith with other families and those who are far away from God. Meditation From Pope Benedict XVI s Address to the Pontifical Council for the Family The new evangelization depends largely on the Domestic Church (cf. ibid. [Familiaris Consortio], n. 65). In our time, as in times past, the eclipse of God, the spread of ideologies contrary to the family and the degradation of sexual ethics are connected. and just as the eclipse of God and the crisis of the family are linked, so the new evangelization is inseparable from the Christian family. The family is indeed the way of the Church because it is the human space of our encounter with Christ. Spouses not only receive the love of Christ and become a saved community, but they are also called upon to communicate Christ s love to their brethren, thus becoming a saving community. The family founded on the sacrament of Marriage is a particular realization of the Church, saved and saving, evangelized and evangelizing community. Just like the Church, it is called to welcome, radiate and show the world the love and presence of Christ. The reception and transmission of divine love are realized in the mutual commitment of the spouses, in generous and responsible procreation, in the care and education of children, work and social relationships, with attention to the needy, in participation in church activities, in commitment to civil society. The Christian family to the extent it succeeds in living love as communion and service as a reciprocal gift open to all, as a journey of permanent conversion supported by the grace of God, reflects the splendor of Christ in the world and the beauty of the divine Trinity. 1.How can we as a family better communicate Christ s presence to others in word and action, thereby becoming a saving community that shares the love of Christ? 2.Remembering that the new evangelization is not new in content but new in ardor, methods and expression, what are some ways we as a family can evangelize, and what truths might we express? 3.Why is family such an effective voice for addressing important issues? Scripture Reading - Psalm 148:1-6, Family Project Invite a family member, friend or acquaintance to Mass, adoration or a faith-forming event with you. Also, write down ideas for small sacrifices and offerings on individual pieces of paper. Place these in a small bowl. Every day, have each member of the family randomly select one piece of paper to offer the sacrifice listed for the intentions of a relative or friend. At the end of the month, each family member might send a note to the person for whom they made the offering, telling him or her about their prayers and sacrifices.

9 Chancellor Report Greetings Brothers, first let me thank you for the honor of being voted in as Chancellor. Please pray for me that I can fully execute my responsibilities. I am grateful for this opportunity to speak to you but more importantly about outreach, recruitment, and brotherhood. The best way I can speak to this is the first welcome that I received from this venerable council. All the Knights, but more specifically our GK Bernie welcomed me with upon arms during the crab feast when I first happened to stumble in during my first ever visit to Catonsville. The brotherhood did not stop there Bernie reached out to my family while we were 7 people living in a two-bedroom temporary hotel and offered his daughters to babysit so that my wife, me, and my mother in law could get a much-needed break (escape the torture) from the kids and our Mastiff! That night we attended the 80 s night and had a blast! That respite after such an arduous Arizona move meant more than words can express. Since that great welcome all the Knights have greeted me with such kindness and a welcoming spirit as if I was a long -time brother of this venerable council! My great experience is what we all need to strive for in our recruitment and community outreach efforts. Let me submit my first challenge to this audience, ask yourself, in your heart of hearts, have you, yes you, individually done all that you can to reach out to our Catholic brethren to recruit? If that answer is no let s not look to the past, rather please come to me with your ideas for recruitment. The only way we can succeed is through prayerful teaming and brainstorming. Let me humbly submit that I have learned a few things from my previous council that we may leverage, and I will do my best to present those ideas and allow our brothers to refine and present them for consultation with our Most Holy Trinity in prayer. Fraternally, John Hart St Joseph Monastery Parish and Patapsco Council # th Annual Crab Feast Sunday, September 30th ~ 12:30-5:00 PM $50 per person ~~~Tickets available August 6 For more information contact Michael Doetzer at

10 What Are You Reading This month s selection of suggested reads is John O Neill s The Fisherman s Tomb: The True Story of the Vatican s Secret Search published by Our Sunday Visitor. This book is the most recent published relating the story of the search for the bones of St. Peter, which had for years been rumored to have been hidden beneath St. Peter s in Rome. John O Neill weaves a tale beginning before World War II, with connections to a rich Texas oilman, the intrigue of Vatican politics all of this spanning eight papacies. The tale is rich with side stories of Pope Pius XII and the Vatican s effort to help Jewish refugees in World War II, efforts of two Americans clergymen to secretly fund the search for the relics to be financed by a Texas oilman who wanted his efforts kept secret. We see that archeology as we think of it now was a relatively new science in the 1950 s but more important the tale speaks of science confirming religion not declaiming. And we find a renowned female archeologist devoting a lifetime to unlocking secrets of the catacombs beneath the Vatican and in that quest renewing her faith. The story of the search begins in 1939 with establishing the Apostle Project, a close kept secret within the Vatican. The tale weaves through the Vatican library and later secret excavations under St. Peter s in Rome. A good mystery read for this summer. Future Council Events July 18 ~~ Installation of New Council Officers July 22 ~~ Council Crab Feast September 30 ~~ St Joseph Monastery Parish and Patapsco Council #1960 Annual Crab Feast
