SUPREME CHAPLAIN S MESSAGE Archbishop William E. Lori Dear Friends in Christ, I write to you today to request your prayers and support for the victims of the current humanitarian crisis in northern Iraq. Sectarian violence has left hundreds of thousands homeless and without basic human necessities. Therefore, I would ask you to join me in responding to Pope Francis call for prayers and support of our suffering sisters and brothers in Iraq by considering a donation to Catholic Relief Services, which expects to provide food, water, education, counseling, and re-settlement assistance to 30,000 families in Iraq over the next six months. I hope that you are able to assist the people of Iraq. Thank you for joining us in praying for peace in Iraq in the words of Pope Francis: May the God of peace create in all an authentic desire for dialogue and reconciliation. Violence is not conquered with violence. Violence is conquered with peace. Let us pray in silence, asking for peace. Prayer for those Persecuted in Iraq (Archdiocese of Baltimore) O God of all the Nations, The One God who is and was and always will be, Who in your Providence willed that your Church be united to the suffering of your Son, Look with mercy on your servants in Iraq, who are persecuted for their faith in you. Grant them perseverance and courage to be worthy imitators of Christ. Bring your wisdom upon leaders of nations to work for peace among all peoples. May your Spirit open conversion for those who contradict your will that we live in harmony. And in all things may we be united in truth and freedom to seek your will in our lives. We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN 4 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

GRAND KNIGHT S REPORT Grand Knight Scott Luco On Wednesday August 20, Patapsco Council welcomed three new Brothers to our Order. Nicholas Calleri, Antoine Dara, and Robert Glueck joined us in the Exemplification of the First Degree, along with two other new Brothers from neighboring Councils. I would like to extend a special thanks to the Patapsco Brothers who participated: Life Member Bob Gardenghi, Sr., who witnessed the Degree; Brothers Mike Karpers, Dave Quigley, and Ed Schmitt, who prepared and served refreshments; and Degree Team Members PGK Michael Doetzer, Gary Warren, Jacob Luco, Bernie Wrisk, Ernie Schaefer, Ken Harness, and Charlie Myers, along with Degree Team Leader Tony Viscardi. I believe there are two fundamental reasons for participating in our Degree work, namely instruction and welcoming of new brothers. Personally, I have participated in more than 40 Exemplifications as a team member, and CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE 5 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE each time I take away something more. The instruction is not just meant for the new Brother, but for those with one, 10, or even 30 years of membership! I can also say that the charges given by our team members are delivered expertly and in a way that inspires me to greater service to God, Church, and Country. This means so much more when I am able to sit with the new Brothers afterward to share food, drink, and fraternity. Remember from our August newsletter that each Knight is a recruiter. It is our duty to offer membership, then to actively welcome our new Brothers! By participating in the Degrees of the Order as a witness or by serving on the team, we are instructed in the ways and purposes of the Order, and we fulfill our obligation to welcome new members. I strongly encourage each Brother to make the time to attend our Degrees, and join the team if you are so moved. The great food we share afterward is a bonus that makes for a great evening among friends. I urge you to support Nicholas, Tony, and Robert; learn more about our Order; and enjoy the company of your Brother Knights! Our next Exemplification will be the Second Degree on Wednesday, September 17, at 8:00 pm. I look forward to seeing you there! Vivat Jesus! We have a moral obligation to invite every eligible Catholic man to join the Knights of Columbus. Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson 6 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT S REPORT Deputy Grand Knight Bernie Wrisk L et us pray for all those families making the adjustments required for getting children back in school, as well all of the educators leading those classes. Let us also give thanks for allowing our Council to help so many this year with Catholic scholarship support, and ask that we may continue to work toward repeating this accomplishment next year. Please save the date for the 3rd Annual Couples Night Out, which will take place on Friday, November 14. The event committee will be meeting soon for planning. If you are interested in helping us make this annual event a huge success, please contact me at bwrisk@verizon.net. Thanks to our Council s great parking lot and location, a local club lacrosse team, Redshirts, had a successful car wash fundraiser on August 16. This fundraiser allowed girls ages 12 and 13 to raise more than $1,000 needed for a lacrosse tour to Canada. Thanks the Brother Knights that brought their vehicles for a good cleaning. Vivat Jesus! 7 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

PROGRAM DIRECTOR S REPORT PGK Barry Casanova B rothers and Patapsco Council family: Labor Day is upon us and the kids are back, or soon to go back, to school. Alabama, Ukraine, Gaza, the economy, IRS, drought, the VA, Ebola, Isis/ Isil genocide and beheadings yes, the world is still a mess, but Patapsco Council plugs on! We have had some successful events to close out the Surge Reporting period ending August 30 Chairmen, note reports are due to me by September 3. Thanks to those who have already submitted. Time seems to be thinning our ranks, but we have some new Brothers coming aboard. We are also awaiting numbers to see how much the Council s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has raised honoring PGK Tom Slifker. If you were not a dumpee (legal terminology), please write a check! Karen and I are matching President Obama s $100 donation (although I think he makes a bit more than I do). Nevertheless, I challenge all Past Grand Knights who can donate to follow suit. I guess it is about time for the airwaves to start with the November election ads. Let us pray that the electorate becomes informed and shows wisdom this time around. Join us for the many events planned this fall, including a final chance to eat crabs. Attendance is improving, so I look forward to seeing you at a business meeting. Mary, Queen of Knights, pray for us. PATAPSCO KNIGHTS PARTICIPATE IN ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE Patapsco Council participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Friday August 29, The event honored PGK Tom Slifker, who was recently diagnosed with ALS. All monies raised from the challenge will be donated to the John Paul II Medical Research Institute, which is a sound organization funding ALS Cure Research that does not fund any embryonic stem cell work. 10 PROGRAMS AND COMMITTEES Church (PGK Michael Doetzer) We helped out two families at the St Joseph Monastery Parish this month with tuition assistance. We awarded our grade school scholarships of $500 to Macenzi McNulty and Brandon Gaskins so they can continue their studies at St Agnes School in Catonsville. The Church will also sponsor a Spaghetti Dinner at the council home on October 26, 3:00-6:00 pm. We invite all Council members and their families to attend. Council (PGK Dennis Brose) Our Council crab feast on August 3 was a great success, with good company, fun games, great music, tasty food, and plenty of fat crabs for everyone. More than 180 people attended, which helped us to raise nearly $2,500 to support our Council work for the year. The music of Days of Vinyl was an enjoyable mix of faster, slower, and catchy dance tunes. Mike Karpers ace team of Brothers in the kitchen served up a tasty spread to get the feasting started, followed by the crabs and games of chance. There is not enough space here to name everyone who helped, but it consisted of just about every active Brother in the Council, so THANK YOU to the entire Council! Your work has paid off to help fund our newsletter and other work. We are looking forward to our 11th annual Crab Feast with St. Joseph Monastery Parish. It is always a great time and an excellent fundraiser for both the parish and the Council charity fund. Family (DGK Bernie Wrisk) On October 4, you can take the family out for a fun day in the country watching some mud fly as cars race around a dirt track and intentionally smash into each other. Yes, we re talking about the Demolition Derby in Arcadia, MD. Gates open at 1:00 pm, races start at 4:00 pm, and the day ends with fireworks after 9:00 pm. Contact DGK Bernie Wrisk if you want to carpool or join our Council s tailgate party at the race. Food for the Needy (PGK Edwin Cogswell) The Food for the Needy Program team is preparing materials for the annual mailing, which you will receive sometime in October. All of the proceeds of this effort help feed families in need in our community. Please support this Council Program as it celebrates its 31st year. Culture of Life (Tim McCarthy) Across the county, 80% of women who see their unborn child choose life. Local pregnancy centers offer free sonograms to expectant women, and these machines can cost up to $80,000. Protecting our youngest Americans is high priority for the Knights of Columbus. To that end, our Supreme Council in Connecticut has offered to match up to 50% of any state contributions toward the purchase of a machine. At our August 13 Council business meeting, we agreed to support this noble cause. Charity (DGK Bernie Wrisk) In response to requests at our last council meeting, the following donations were made from the Charity Fund: A $50 donation to Catholic Relief Services to aid the Christians in Iraq, and a $50 donation to the Maryland State Council for the Ultrasound Project. Community (Jacob Luco) Our next semi-annual Shredding Day will be on Saturday, October 11. This event will be held RAIN or SHINE. For information on what equipment will and will not be acceptable, please contact the Council at , or Mike Blair at mblair@beaumonthall.com. 11 CHANCELLOR S REPORT John Journell Many of you may have noticed that our Council is getting back to praying the Rosary regularly as a group. A Rosary is being said before each Business and Officers meeting, led by our Worthy Lecturer, Tim McCarthy. Our Worthy Grand Knight has asked me to lead our Rosary Team, which meets to pray the Rosary wherever requested, such as funerals and memorial services. Saint Pope John Paul II said, The Rosary of the Virgin Mary...is a prayer loved by countless Saints and encouraged by the Magisterium. Simple yet profound, it still remains, at the dawn of this third millennium, a prayer of great significance, destined to bring forth a harvest of Holiness. We are finding that living in the third millennium is to live in very trying times where the forces of evil seem to be surrounding us with nobody fighting back. The Rosary is a very powerful weapon that we all need to be saying in one voice. As the Blessed Pope Pius IX stated, If I had an army to say the Rosary, I could conquer the world. Let s all pull out our Rosaries in daily prayer, let us honor and ask for help from our Blessed Mother, and please join our Rosary Team to honor our Blessed Mother and those who request our presence when they need the power of the Rosary the most in their lives. Send an to me and I will make sure you will receive notice of when and where we are needed. Finally, notify me if you know of anybody who would like to have our Rosary Team in attendance. Please remember the following people in your prayers. Paul Boettinger PGK Bob Carhart PGK Reggie DiSante Robert Hoffman PGK Tom Slifker PGK Ed Canter John Lackey Wil Baldwin Jim Manning Helen Legg Patricia Johnson Paul Buckley Phyllis McVearry PGK Warren Norris Brad Jaeger Norman Sanford Chancellor Gary Lyles (Woodlawn Council) If you have any prayer intentions for someone in your family, please contact Chancellor John Journell to get the person s name included in our prayers. You may also fill out a prayer request form on our Council website. We believe in the power of prayer and would be happy to include your family members in our prayers. You can send your prayer requests to John via at chancellor1960@gmail.com. 11 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

MARIJUANA ROLLING THE DICE IN COLORADO CO-EDITOR TIM McCARTHY Science and our own experience confirm that abusing alcohol causes aggressive driving mishaps. With marijuana, the research for solitary use is different. Someone using marijuana is likely to drive below the speed limit and drive conservatively. This helps the user compensate for the fact that his judgment and reaction time are compromised. Research also shows that, when both substances are used, we get the worst of both worlds. Marijuana damages the user s judgment and reaction time, but the aggressive behaviors of alcohol use override the conservative tendencies of marijuana use by itself. We are told that fatalities from alcohol outnumber marijuana. Yet, it is also true that it is far easier to detect alcohol in a fatally injured driver than to detect grass. The citizens of Colorado suggest that, now that marijuana is readily available, the aggressive patterns connected with alcohol use will decrease. Nothing in the law prevents drivers from using both substances together. Since the use of both substances has unpredictable consequences, the year-end statistics could be alarming. Colorado residents have chosen to roll the dice and see what happens. The only clear way to be certain we are getting accurate information is by comparing total traffic fatalities in Colorado with the three years prior. Let us hope reporters from the Denver Post Dispatch are keeping track. OUR LADY, QUEEN OF THE KNIGHTS, PRAY FOR US! 14 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

FAMILY OF THE MONTH Our council recognizes James Jordan and his family as our Family of the Month. James and his wife, Andie, are raising their three children Andrei, Dimitri, and Palina in the Catholic faith as parishioners of St. Mark. James is a member of our Council and can be found regularly with his family at church. All three children serve either as altar servers or as a sacristan. The children attend St. Mark School and Mount Saint Joseph. Dinner time is important for their family s success, as it is one of the rare times they can stop for an hour and be a family. Sometimes during dinner, James tries to relate a reading from mass or the breviary to what s going on in their lives, or to life in general. Please suggest future Family of the Month candidates to Bernie Wrisk via at bwrisk@verizon.net or call (443) POPE FRANCIS PRAYER FOR THE MONTH THIS MONTH OF SEPTEMBER, THERE SHALL BE NO SORROW IN YOUR HOMES NEITHER SHALL THERE BE AFFLICTIONS OR CALAMITIES; ONLY SHOUTS OF JOY & GOODNEWS SHALL BE HEARD IN YOUR HOMES. STARTING FROM THIS MOMENT, THE GLORY OF GOD WILL SHINE UPON YOU, THE ANOINTING FOR GOOD HEALTH, SUCCESS, PROGRESS, PROSPERITY, MARITAL AND FINANCIAL BREAKTHROUGH SHALL REST PERMANENTLY ON YOUR LIVES IN THE MIGHTY NAME OF JESUS CHRIST... 16 SUPREME COUNCIL NEWS KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ANNOUNCES FUND TO HELP CHRISTIANS THREATENED WITH EXTINCTION IN IRAQ The Knights of Columbus announced today that it is establishing a fund to assist those particularly Christians as well as other religious minorities facing a horrific and violent persecution and possible extinction in Iraq and the surrounding regions. The Knights has pledged an initial $500,000 and will match an additional $500,000 in donations from the public. The unprovoked and systematic persecution and violent elimination of Middle East Christians, as well as other minority groups, especially in Iraq, has created an enormous humanitarian crisis, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. Pope Francis has asked the world for prayers and support for those affected by this terrible persecution, and we are asking our members, and all people of good will, to pray for those persecuted and support efforts to assist them by donating to this fund. Anderson added: It has shocked the conscience of the world that people are systematically being purged from the region where their families have lived for millennia simply for their faith. It is imperative that we stand in solidarity with them in defense of the freedom of conscience, and provide them with whatever relief we can. Those seeking to assist with the relief efforts can donate to K of C Christian Refugee Relief by visiting org/iraq or by sending checks or money orders to: K of C Christian Refugee Relief, Knights of Columbus Charities, P.O. Box 1966, New Haven, CT Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc., is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a charitable organization under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code, and 100 percent of all donations collected by Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc., will be used for humanitarian assistance for those Christians as well as other religious minorities being persecuted or displaced in Iraq and the surrounding region. Get more news from the Supreme Council website: STATE COUNCIL NEWS SEEKING SPECIAL SUPPORT Stephen J. Adamczyk, State Deputy Maryland Knights of Columbus In a balanced organization, working towards a common objective, there is success. As Knights our common objective is to share the vision and dream of Fr. McGivney with every eligible Catholic male over the age of 18. Never lose sight of his vision. September is another busy month; we have first degrees scheduled, many council events to plan, and our biggest charity month (Tootsie Roll) to get ready for. I am asking however that you all plan on going that extra mile on September 27th, 2014, for Maryland Knights of Columbus Rockin with Special Olympics Day. My dream is that all councils in the state will unite for one day, for one cause, and show that we as knights ARE united in charity, and when put to the test, can be a force to be reckoned with. When we show our UNITY for this event, it will disprove the myth that if needed, we Catholics CAN ban together for any event that would threaten Our Church, Our Faith, and Our Clergy Patapsco Knight Newsletter

BALTIMORE CHAPTER OF GRAND KNIGHTS SEPTEMBER 2014 SCHEDULE The next meeting will take place on Thursday, September 11, at Cardinal Gibbons Council #2521. There is a Shrimp Night planned for the Ladies. For more information, visit FRATERNAL BENEFITS NEWS KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS LAUNCHES LONG- TERM CARE PLUS On August 18, the Knights of Columbus launched its new Long-Term Care Plus product in 40 states, Canada (excluding Quebec), and Puerto Rico.* The new product is an enhancement and replacement of the Order s existing Long-Term Care insurance, where approved. Originally introduced in 2000, Knights of Columbus long-term care insurance is designed to help Knights and their eligible family members pay for skilled and custodial care whether at home or in an extended care facility without having to deplete their assets and their estate. While life expectancies have been improving steadily, living longer may very well mean needing more care. Statistics show that nearly 70 percent of individuals over the age of 65 will require at least some type of long-term care services during their lifetime.* And those services are becoming more and more expensive. On average, nursing home care can cost upwards of $83,000 per year, while at-home care can cost more than $60,000 per year.** Yet most regular health insurance plans or government assistance programs do not provide sufficient coverage for long-term care needs. Long-term care insurance from the Knights of Columbus helps mitigate that risk by helping you cover your costs. The new Long Term Care Plus product is available for issue ages 18-75, and is offered with two coverage plans: comprehensive coverage, which covers care at a facility or in a home, and facilityonly, which helps pay for nursing home or assisted living care. Long Term Care Plus contracts can be customized with the help of your Knights of Columbus field agent to best fit your projected needs and budget. Working with your agent, you can select the daily benefit amount, the benefit duration, and the elimination period that best suits your situation. Knights and their eligible family members can also take advantage of other features, such as the optional inflation rider which can help enhance the value of the product, and a spousal discount which is available to eligible applicants. Also included in each Knights of Columbus Long Term Care Plus policy is the Return of Premium Rider, which refunds premiums if the insured dies prior to age 65. For more information on Knights of Columbus Long Term Care Plus, contact your local Knights of Columbus field agent. * Not yet available in AZ, CA, CT, DE, DC FL, HI, IN, MT, NJ, ND, and NY 17 Patapsco Knight Newsletter
