STATE CHAPLAIN S MESSAGE Reverend Milton E. Jordan As we celebrate a month that includes the annual feast of St. Joseph the Worker as well as Pentecost Sunday, we are, most of us, I believe, more inclined to consider May the month we dedicated to the mother of Jesus, Mary, the Mother of our Church. In the May issue of Magnificat, the editor, Fr. Peter Cameron, OP, suggests a relationship between the Mother of God and the Holy Spirit that can be read in the Catechism. Here are the words from the Catechism that Fr. Cameron suggests for some prayerful consideration: (1) the Holy Spirit prepared Mary by his grace ; (2) In Mary, the Holy Spirit fulfills the plan of the Father s loving goodness ; (30 In Mary, the Holy Spirit manifests the Son of the Father ; and, through Mary, the Holy Spirit begins to bring men... into communion with Christ. Perhaps, after reading these citations from the Catechism, one might feel that our Catholic faith surely puts some challenging thoughts before us. For sure to understand these remarks fully, one might need a short course in some of the theology that we profess in our Catholic religion. During these days of renewed Evangelization programs, the challenge before us does require of us some reading, even more reflection and perhaps not being ashamed to ask questions of our priests, religions sisters and brothers and even one another. Father Cameron suggests that through some of those gifts of the Holy Spirit given to us at the time of our Confirmation and through our prayers and petitions to the ever-ready presence of Mary perhaps we can come closer to our God. Father Cameron noted that Pope Francis has encouraged each of us to an understanding of what is truly beautiful in our experience of life and the world that God has given us. To be a Knight of Columbus we profess to have a special allegiance to Mary, Mother of God. I bring to your attention some of the words of a Prayer of His Holiness, Benedict XVI, again quoted in the May issue of Magnificat. Of course the entire prayer can be found on the Vatican website. The previous Pope said made these petitions which may be helpful for each of us during this Mary Month. We come before you today to implore your protection. My brother Knights, does this intercession not remind us that in those difficult Council moments, in challenging family situations, there is a particular person who is there for us. With Pope Benedict, we, too, can pray...with a Mother s care, guide [us]... so that they may always be a leaven of harmonious coexistence among all citizens. In our darkest moments, in times when our faith is challenged, we can pray Mother of hope, in the darkness of Holy Saturday you journeyed with unfailing trust towards the dawn of Easter. Grant that your children may discern at all times, even those that are darkest, the signs of God s loving presence. As priests and chaplains, I do believe we share in the experiences of other Knights as well as the true believers in our parishes in the pains and sufferings of many others. At the present time, we know that there are so many true believers who are suffering not only a lack of financial well-being but substantial abilities to resolve or end what makes life so miserable for themselves and their families. And how many children and wives have had to witness or learn that a husband and father has had to pay with his life because he said Credo, I do believe. Brothers, during this month of Mary, let us turn to her, imploring her assistance for our Brother Knights who are suffering, perhaps for reasons we do not know, perhaps because of serious and prolonged illnesses and perhaps because of unfortunate circumstances that have occurred in our families. Mary is there for us. Let us not forget to be faithfully dedicated to that rosary our State Deputy so frequently reminds us to carry and prayer each day. Let us pray that we may continue to be the witnesses to our faith with the dedication of our Founder, Fr. Michael McGivney. Vivat Jesus! 4 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

GRAND KNIGHT S REPORT Grand Knight Scott Luco May is the month of Mary, Mother of the Church and of her Knights. Remember to carry your Rosary with you always, and pray it as often as you can! Also remember to honor all mothers this month; thank them for their Yes to the gift of life! With Mother s Day comes our annual Mom s Night Out, chaired by our Worth Deputy Grand Knight, Bernie Wrisk. Please join us on May 8 to honor all mothers and enjoy the harmonies of the Cherelles. We also have elections this month, so plan to make your voice heard in the Council by attending our Business Meeting May 27 at 8:00. We will pray the Rosary prior to the meeting, so get there early to pray for our Council, our Parishes, our City, State, and Country. All need prayers! We had one of the busiest Aprils in memory, and I would like to give a huge note of thanks to all of the Brothers who pitched in to make it successful. Shredding Day and the Flea Market were both blessed with record turnouts, and the funds raised will help us continue our work. The Chicken Dinner with St. Joseph s Monastery also went off without a hitch, and the St. Agnes Breast Cancer Fundraiser was a big hit again. As if that wasn t enough cooking, our Fr. Leo event on April 23 took the cake! Fr. Leo gave a great demonstration and homily on the importance of eating meals together as a family, and we had the rare opportunity to spend a great deal of time talking with him individually. I really enjoyed watching the laughter of all of the guests at Fr. Leo s wit and the deep level of understanding of his message. This was an epic family event, and we will be happy to host Fr Leo again in the future! Thanks to all of the chairmen Mike Blair, Ed and Joann Fuller, Michael Doetzer, and Chancellor John Journell. This was a fun month! Remember: each Brother has a moral obligation to offer membership in our Order to each Catholic man he knows. The events we held in April brought joy to our community and Council, services that are much appreciated, and charity to those in need. This is what fulfills men, and I for one can t get enough. I want to share this wonderful tired-yetfulfilled feeling, don t you? Make a point TODAY to share our work with a Catholic man and invite him to join our Order. Vivat Jesus! 5 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT S REPORT Deputy Grand Knight Bernie Wrisk Showing our faith through our works. May they see the face of God in your giving of yourself for them. I have an opportunity to help a coworker build her much needed handicap-accessible new home through Habitat for Humanity on May 9. There are other spots available for more volunteers if you are able to join me. There also is a GoFundMe account and trust fund set up for this single mom and her two children (one age 13 with lifelong struggles due to brain tumors). She needs help coming up with her deposit required by June 1. You can learn more by going to gofundme.com/amorganelmo. Please contact me at bwrisk@verizon.net if you would like to join me or plan for another date to help. While I volunteer, I will adorn one of my KofC shirts as my work shirt and would love to have other brother Knights alongside me. Hats off to John Journell for chairing the incredibly successful Grace Before Meals event. The dinner and cooking presentation by Fr Leo was so much fun and inspiring for us in the Catholic faith that we must repeat it. I expect, at the time you are reading this over the first weekend of May, to be enjoying the fraternity with many of you at my first State Convention in Ocean City. Vivat Jesus! John Journell CHANCELLOR S REPORT I lead our Rosary Team, which meets to pray the Rosary wherever requested, such as funerals and memorial services. Saint Pope John Paul II said, The Rosary of the Virgin Mary...is a prayer loved by countless Saints and encouraged by the Magisterium. Simple yet profound, it still remains, at the dawn of this third millennium, a prayer of great significance, destined to bring forth a harvest of Holiness. The Rosary is a very powerful weapon that we all need to be saying in one voice. As the Blessed Pope Pius IX stated, If I had an army to say the Rosary, I could conquer the world. Let s all pull out our Rosaries in daily prayer, let us honor and ask for help from our Blessed Mother, and please join our Rosary Team to honor our Blessed Mother and those who request our presence when they need the power of the Rosary the most in their lives. Send an to me and I will make sure you will receive notice of when and where we are needed. Finally, notify me if you know of anybody who would like to have our Rosary Team in attendance. 6 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

PROGRAM DIRECTOR S REPORT PGK Barry Casanova Brothers and Patapsco Council family: It s May! Having e-filed, I am awaiting the computers to do their jobs and send refunds. Meanwhile, the Council slips into high gear with many activities and the State Convention in Ocean City. Best of Luck to GK Scott in OC. Let s see if we get some recognition for our Council Surge Programs. I think we had an active and fulfilling year with many fine programs, which demonstrated part of what it means to be in the Knights of Columbus. Thanks to all who helped or participated. On Wednesday, May 27, we will have Council Elections. Remember, the Rosary starts at 7:30 pm, and the meeting will be at 8 pm. That is the most important business meeting of the year, so please try to attend deep snow and ice are no longer valid excuses. Those nominated as Officers so far are listed in this Patapsco Knight, but, remember, nominations can be made from the floor. Next year s leadership is important; we wish to continue the momentum generated by successful new ideas and programs of this past year. Share your thoughts and ideas with your Brothers so we can have strong Council leadership relevant, innovative, growing the Council and hopefully getting more young members to help our demographics! 9 TODAY S NEW STANDARDS Co-Editor Tim McCarthy In past eras, all of us did not necessarily always do the right thing, but at least we knew what the right thing to do was. Today, the distinctions aren t so clear. Our children hear rap music blaring from a parent s car espousing violent acts against women and police. When a 6 year old hears this, how do we expect him to know this really isn t a good thing? In 1960, the government did nothing to distribute condoms or to require sex education. The illegitimacy rate in 1960 was 3%. Today, it is above 40%. Is it possible there is some connection here? The act of sodomy has been consistently condemned since the writing of the Old Testament. Today, we are told that if a man or woman get married to someone of the same sex, this is a virtuous act. Children who live inside the womb may be killed. But if they are located outside the womb, they may not be killed. How does movement through a physical location create personhood? In today s world, people seem to accept that, if enough people agree that something bad has become good, we can all take part. In 1960, Bishop Sheen used to say, Right is right if nobody s right and wrong is wrong if everybody s wrong. We must indeed pray for today s children. The distinctions they are asked to make between right and wrong are far more difficult than anything that was ever expected of us. DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT Deacon Hugh Mills Brothers, I have a lot of experience with hospice care. We care for men and women who are at the end of life. We go in and hold the hands of those who are dying for as long as it takes hours or days. And we talk to them. The last thing that actually dies is a person s hearing. A person who is at end of life can hear right to the end, and I prefer to say the 23rd Psalm. In my experience, when you start saying the 23rd Psalm and you get to the part where you talk about the valley of the shadow of death, the person smiles. Shortly after, they go home to God. It is so much a thrill to be a part of that. To see a person who is suffering actually smile is wonderful. That one scripture reading is extremely important to those who have been in the valley of the shadow of death and have feared no evil. Vivat Jesus! 9 Patapsco Knight Newsletter

SUPREME COUNCIL NEWS DOCUMENTARY ON ST. JOHN PAUL II DEBUTS ON NATIONAL TV A new K of C-produced documentary on St. John Paul II and his relationship with North and South America will screen soon on national television networks. John Paul II in America: Uniting a Continent explores how the papacy of St. John Paul II left an indelible mark on the American continent. Driven by his singular conviction of a United American Continent under the patronage of Our Lady of Guadalupe, John Paul II s papal travels from Argentina to Alaska generated massive crowds, shaped an entire generation and ultimately changed the course of history. Narrated by actor Andy Garcia, the film features rare archival footage and insightful analysis from leading figures, including Cardinal Seán P. O Malley of Boston, Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson, John Paul II biographer George Weigel and former Vatican spokesman Joaquín Navarro-Valls. Viewers will be both intrigued and moved by the documentary s unprecedented framework for understanding one of the giant figures of our times. John Paul II brought a great renewal of confidence, excitement and joy to Christian life that was manifested in such events as the canonization of St. Juan Diego in Mexico City and the World Youth Days in Buenos Aires, Denver and Toronto. He also issued a renewed call for human dignity, the gospel of life, respect for indigenous people, and a commitment to the poor throughout Latin America and North America. ---Supreme Knight Carl Anderson STATE COUNCIL NEWS MAY IS THE MONTH OF MARY Stephen J. Adamczyk, State Deputy, Maryland State Council Hail Mary, Full of Grace! Blessed art thou, amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. When we say this prayer with every decade of Mary s Rosary we carry as her Knights, and pray often, do we really think about what she did for us as sinners on earth? It is through her we receive the Lord and Savior into this world! She is the vehicle of our salvation! Remember that, when you pray to Mary, Jesus would refuse his mother nothing, so ask for her intercession. I wish to thank the entire State Family for the excellent progress we have made this year to date. The attention to detail has been superlative, and your energy and enthusiasm has been infectious. We have accomplished many of the goals I had set for myself as the State Deputy, and will continue to do so through the end of this fraternal year. The open communication from all of you has assisted the State Officers in achieving many SUCCESSES where, if it were not for you bringing it to our attention, we may not have seen the issue. You hospitality and friendship is much appreciated and means a great deal to all of the Officers and our wives. I ask Mary to bless all of you and your families during the month of May. Dear God, Please keep my family, friends and loved ones safe. Please watch over them always, and let good health, happiness, and good fortune befall them. Amen! Pray your Rosary! God Bless and Vivat Jesus! 13 Patapsco Knight Newsletter
