2 THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD Each week we gather in this holy place to be nourished at the tables of word and Eucharist. Isaiah s words in today s first reading beckon all who hunger and thirst to come to the Lord. This is precisely what we have done in our own hunger and thirst for the Lord. We listen carefully to the voice of God, who proclaims that Jesus is the beloved One God s only Son. As God s word is proclaimed today, let us God s beloved be nourished and ask God to strengthen us in our commitment to share the Good News with all we meet. 3 The Baptism of the Lord After Jesus was baptized, He came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened for Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon Him. Matthew 3: The Christmas season comes to a conclusion today as we remember the baptism of the Lord in the Jordan by John the Baptist. How fitting it is that the refrain for today s responsorial psalm is, The Lord will bless His people with peace. as we celebrate the continued manifestation of Christ to the world, we recognize the tremendous potential for peace that exists in the hearts of all who have been baptized into the Christ. Isaiah tells us that God s chosen ones are those who have been called for the victory of justice. Let us not leave the work of justice and peace to others. Let us listen attentively to God s saving word and pray that we, in whatever ways possible small or large will bring justice and peace to those people and to those places where injustice, suffering, and violence flourish. The interim Parish Council members were just so amazed at the workings of the Holy Spirit here in the Parish from February 2008 to November Now that we have a Pastoral Council we are just in awe and credit it all to the workings of the Holy Spirit. Let s keep the Spirit moving among us. Next week we will have a volunteer sign-up sheet in the bulletin. There is something there for each of us to do. If everyone does a little, then no one is over worked and besides it will be fun and rewarding! As the saying goes, Try it, you ll like it! 4 Think About It Isn t it funny how $10.00 looks so big when we take it to church...and so small when we take it to the store? Isn t it funny how big 60 minutes are when serving God, but how small when we are fishing, or playing golf or basketball? Isn t it funny how laborious it is to read a chapter of the Bible, but how easy to read 200 or 300 pages of a novel? Isn t it funny how we believe what a person or newspaper says, but question what the Bible says? Isn t it funny how we need 2 or 3 weeks to fit a church event into our schedule, but have no problem adjusting for a social event at the last minute? Isn t it funny how we get thrilled when a football game goes into extra-overtime, but we complain when a sermon is longer than we expected? Isn t it funny how people scramble to get a front seat at any game, but scramble to get a back seat at church? Isn t it funny how everyone wants to go to heaven, provided they don t have to believe...think...say...or do anything?
