2 SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: 2 Kings 4:42-44 Elisha the prophet feeds 100 people with 20 barley loaves. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 145:10-11,15-16,17-18 The Lord feeds his people and answers their needs. Second Reading: Ephesians 4:1-6 The Ephesians are encouraged to live the unity of their Baptism. Gospel Reading: John 6:1-15 Jesus feeds the crowd of more than five thousand people with five barley loaves and two fish. Today's Gospel passage from John begins the famous Bread of Life discourse. Everyone has a place at the table. Not only are all fed, but there is plenty left over--which John tells us is enough to fill twelve baskets. The number twelve in scripture always recalls the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles. In short, it refers to all people. However, awareness of the miracle of what Jesus did when he fed them is not immediately apparent to those in the crowds. Understanding this comes slowly and gradually. Jesus must step back and wait for the right time. He withdraws from the crowds, but they are left with the taste and the memory of his presence among them. Jesus left with us his real and true presence in the Blessed Sacrament as a sign of his love for us. Tickets are $20 for 17 weeks of the regular football season. In the past, we have had several $500 winners, a few $250, $100, and $50 winners, and several $25 winners. 3 IMPRESSIVE AND JOYFUL ST. AGNES SUMMER FESTIVAL Our Summer Festival of 2012 was a great success a wonderful gathering of the community and a joyful display of the spirit, energy, and support for our St. Agnes School. Final figures will be given in a future bulletin. Also, it was for me a special and impressive sight to see ALL those hard-working volunteers. You have my heartfelt remembrance. We cannot thank everyone individually, but we say THANKS to everyone collectively all the chairpersons, all the workers, all who donated, and all who were patrons. And our prayerful thanks to the Festival Chairperson, Jason Bevan, the Games Chairperson, Beverly Stavor, and their dedicated committee staff and the endless list of unnamed volunteers who made our St. Agnes Summer Festival impressive, joyful, and profitable!! A very special thanks to Bev Stavor who has served the Festival in a chairperson capacity for the past 10 years and who will now be stepping down. Bev's commitment and service are deeply appreciated. Prayerfully others in the parish will volunteer to continue our successful festivals. Many parishioners may not be keenly aware of all the behind-the-scenes work that went into preparing for this annual 145th Festival. An enormous amount of work was done by a handful of dedicated and willing parishioners. I do express my heartfelt and prayerful appreciation to these concerned parishioners who joyfully did the work and many other parishioners who pitched in to help. You are the Litany of Saints for St. Agnes!! We need to say thanks to the Lord and God willing, we will do it again for next year s 146th Festival as we continue our dedicated efforts in the support of our St. Agnes School. 4 150 Mass Journals were distributed through the display at the entrance to St. Agnes Church! As we look forward to the Year of Faith, proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI to begin October 11th, 2012, the St. Agnes Pastoral Council is hopeful that our faith community will use the Mass Journals to prepare for Mass and to jot down what God is speaking to each of us individually through the Scripture readings at Mass. Please remember to use the Mass Journals for their intended purpose. Have you noticed that the Opening Prayer, the Collect, is special for each Mass? After the Penitential Act (or after the Gloria when prescribed), pay attention to the Opening Prayer, the Collect, which is unique and especially meaningful for each liturgy. It prepares us for the Scripture readings of the day. Reasons to Come to Sunday Mass: We can obtain the spiritual richness of an intimate union with Jesus by receiving Him in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Jesus commanded us to Do this in remembrance of Me, changing bread and wine into His Body and Blood and instituting the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist to be with us always. Jesus gave authority to the Church to determine that the best way to accomplish Jesus command is through our Sunday obligation and privilege to participate in the Mass. We are in communion with fellow worshippers. The dates of Natural Family Planning Awareness Week, July 22nd through July 28th, highlighted the anniversary of Humanae Vitae, the papal encyclical which articulates Catholic beliefs about human sexuality, conjugal love and responsible parenthood. The dates also marked the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne (July 26th), the parents of the Blessed Mother.
