2 FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT The fourth Sunday of Lent is sometimes called Laetare Sunday. Laetare is a Latin word that means rejoice. Traditionally, Sundays are named after the first word of the liturgy's opening antiphon. On this Sunday, the antiphon is taken from the book of the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 66:10-11). Even as we observe our Lenten sacrifices, we rejoice in anticipation of the joy that will be ours at Easter. Today's Gospel reading is taken from John's Gospel. It consists of two parts. The first part is the final sentence of Jesus' reply to Nicodemus, the Pharisee who approached Jesus at night. Nicodemus acknowledged Jesus as someone who had come from God and seemed to want to be a follower of Jesus. Jesus greeted Nicodemus with the observation that one must be born from above to see the Kingdom of God. The dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemus that followed was about the meaning of this phrase. Nicodemus misunderstood Jesus at every point, but there was no animosity in the questions he posed to Jesus. In the part of the conversation with Nicodemus in today's Gospel, Jesus referred to an incident reported in the Old Testament. When the Israelites grumbled against the Lord during their sojourn in the desert, God sent venomous serpents to punish them for their complaints. The Israelites repented and asked Moses to pray for them. The Lord heard Moses' prayer and instructed him to make a bronze serpent and mount it on a pole. All who had been bitten by a serpent and then looked upon the bronze serpent were cured. By recalling this story, Jesus alludes to the salvation that would be accomplished through his death and Resurrection. The second part of today's Gospel is a theological reflection on Jesus' words to Nicodemus. The Gospel of John is known for this kind of reflection offered within the narrative. The words of the Evangelist are in continuity with the words of the prologue to John's Gospel. In these reflections, John elaborates on a number of themes that are found in his Gospel: light and darkness, belief and unbelief, good and evil, salvation and condemnation. In John's reflection, we find an observation about human sinfulness. Jesus is the light that has come into the world, but people preferred the darkness. We wish to keep our sins hidden, even from God. Jesus has come into the world to reveal our sins so that they may be forgiven. 3 Anniversary of St. Agnes Parish Founding It was on March 19th, 1867, that a Mission of St. Peter s Parish in McKeesport was canonically established as a Parish by Bishop Michael Domenic, Bishop of Pittsburgh, and placed under the patronage of Saint Agnes. So on Monday, we as a parish, will be 145 years old. For all these years the Catholic Faith has been passed on, and continues to be passed on from parents to children. And while we are long in years, we are ever young at heart. May the Lord continue to bless and guide our Faith Community. So we wish all parishioners a Happy 145th Anniversary. Feast of St. Joseph Celebrated on Monday Saint Joseph was chosen by God to be the Foster-Father of Jesus and the Husband of Mary, who herself was chosen by God to bear and bring forth the Son of God in human form. Joseph was honored on March 19th since the end of the 10th century; declared the Patron of the Universal Church in 1870 by Pope Pius IX and Guardian of the Redeemer in 1989 by Pope John Paul II; patron of workers and carpenters; also of Austria, Belgium, Bohemia, Canada, Mexico, Peru and (south) Vietnam; mentioned in the Roman Canon. As we celebrate his feast on Monday, March 19th, we pray, St. Joseph, pray for us and intercede for our Faith Communities. Easter Flower Memorials for Living/Deceased As in the past, the lilies and other flowers that will enhance the Sanctuaries at Holy Trinity and St. Agnes at Easter can be memorials for the living or deceased. If you wish to make a donation toward these flowers in memory of someone, please put it in the special white envelope found in your monthly packet of envelopes and write on it their name/s as well as your own. ANNUAL EASTER SLOVAK MASS On Saturday, March 31, 2012, Prince of Peace Parish (South Side) will host its annual Slovak Mass and Easter Customs Breakfast. Please note the new, earlier times: The Holy Rosary will be prayed in Slovak at 9:45 am at St. Adalbert Church (162 So. 15th Street), immediately followed by Mass, also in Slovak, at 10:00 am. After Mass, everyone is invited to the Prince of Peace Parish Center (81 So. 13th Street) to sample an Easter breakfast - Slovak style - with sunka, kolbasy, pysanky, paska, siretz, hrin, and kolace. Cultural displays, craft demonstrations, a bake sale, unique gifts and a "Slovak Auction" will also be available. A basket filled with goodies needed for a traditional Slovak Easter breakfast, under a handembroidered basket cover, will be raffled. A free will donation is asked to help defray the cost of the meal and is gratefully appreciated.
