2 Sunday, January 27, rd Sunday in Ordinary Time This weekend there is a second collection for the Church in Latin America. Many people in Latin America and the Caribbean do not have access to church programs and ministries because of difficult rural terrain and a lack of ministers. Your support provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, and other programs to help share our faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ. To learn more, visit usccb.org/latin-america Catholic Schools Week Jan. 27-Feb. 1 The observance of CSW began in Schools and parishes around the country will hold activities such as Masses, open houses, and family gatherings to celebrate the communities they represent. The week also highlights the educational and community successes of Catholic schools nationwide. Ninety nine percent of Catholic school students graduate from high school and 86 percent of Catholic school graduates attend college. This percentage has been consistent for over 20 years. Faith Formation Maggie Ogram, Coordinator Prayer Partners Thank you to everyone who has signed up for a prayer partner! Currently, all of our kids receiving sacraments this year have a prayer partner. If you would like a prayer partner but did not get in contact with me, give me a call and we can work something out! Catholic School Eric Sonnek, Principal Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten Classroom News The Pre-K students focus their learning through fun, and fun is what we ve been having! Our classroom curriculum centers around the alphabet. Each week we learn a new letter. We practice writing our upper and lower case letters, learn letter sounds through visual and written phonics, and we do an art project with the letter in it. We grow in our self-confidence by being the calendar helper and show and tell. We are expanding our love of music with Ms. Buhr and Story Time with Ms. Amy at the Wabasha Public Library. This is a class time favorite. The kindergarten room has been a busy and productive place to be! We are becoming super readers, writers, explorers, scientists and mathematicians. Most importantly, we are learning how to work together and solve problems and recognize that we are all Children of God. We are a creative group of learners and enjoy enhancing our learning through song, movement, music, and creative lessons. Our possibilities are limitless! We are having so much fun learning that we would like to extend an invitation to anyone interested in learning about all the wonderful things School has to offer. Adult Faith Formation Program PRAYER- Finding Intimacy with God Begins January 30 th -- a six week program Please join us for a video series and discussion on Prayer from the Augustine Institute's Lectio series. Prayer is one of the most basic elements of a life of faith, but it isn t always easy to do. We re taught that prayer is a conversation, we often feel as if the conversation is completely one-sided. In six video sessions, Prayer: Finding Intimacy with God, we can learn the secret to opening our hearts and minds to Scripture as the means to hear from God and then respond in conversation. The sessions are held on Wednesday or Thursday in the afternoon from 1:00-2:30 pm at the Hust home th St. E, Wabasha. Please call Nancy Hust at (651) if you have questions or to register. We need background to understand what s happening in today s First Reading. Babylon having been defeated, King Cyrus of Persia decreed that the exiled Jews could return home to Jerusalem. They rebuilt their ruined temple (see Ezra 6:15 17) and under Nehemiah finished rebuilding the city walls (see Nehemiah 6:15). The stage was set for the renewal of the covenant and the re-establishment of the Law of Moses as the people s rule of life. That s what s going on in today s First Reading, as Ezra reads and interprets (see Nehemiah 8:8) the Law and the people respond with a great Amen! Israel, as we sing in today s Psalm, is rededicating itself to God and His Law. The scene seems like the Isaiah prophecy that Jesus reads from in today s Gospel. Read all of Isaiah 61. The glad tidings Isaiah brings include these promises: the liberation of prisoners (61:1); the rebuilding of Jerusalem, or Zion (61:3 4; see also Isaiah 60:10); the restoration of Israel as a kingdom of priests (61:6; Exodus 19:6); and the forging of an everlasting covenant (61:8; Isaiah 55:3). It sounds a lot like the First Reading. Jesus, in turn, declares that Isaiah s prophecy is fulfilled in Him. The Gospel scene, too, recalls the First Reading. Like Ezra, Jesus stands before the people, is handed a scroll, unrolls it, then reads and interprets it (compare Luke 4:16 17, 21 and Nehemiah 8:2 6, 8 10). We witness in today s Liturgy the creation of a new people of God. Ezra started reading at dawn of the first day of the Jewish new year (see Leviticus 23:24). Jesus also proclaims a sabbath, a great year of Jubilee, a deliverance from slavery to sin, a release from the debts we owe to God (see Leviticus 25:10). The people greeted Ezra as one man. And, as today s Epistle teaches, in the Spirit the new people of God the Church is made one body with Him.

Life and Dignity of the Human Person Responding with Love in a Polarized World A morning reflection on the Life and Dignity of the Human Person is being held in McCauley Hall at Pax Christi Church in Rochester on Saturday, February 2, from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm. Tom Parlin, from Catholic Charities will be the presenter. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Free will offering will be taken. The evening concludes with Benediction. Stay for fellowship and refreshments. Come for all or part of the evening. Just come and experience God s love and mercy.
