Harvest Festivals are again with us and across our nine parishes we are half way through. It s been a difficult summer for farmers and growers, indeed all of us, with the weather conducting itself like the proverbial drunken sailor in the popular folk song! We seem to have had a lot of reeling about with loads of rain and only short bursts of fine weather. So much human life seems to be like that with all its ups and downs! The Psalms in the Bible reflect this turbulence as there is nothing new under the sun. The Psalmist is extraordinary in experiencing the whole range of human emotions and experiences, including raging against God when things go wrong Hear my voice O God in my complaining: preserve my life from fear of the enemy. (Ps 64:1) At the same time, the Psalmist knows that God will always be there he is my Rock and my Salvation (Ps 62:2) even though there are times when God can get angry too at Man s shortcomings (Ps 74).. Yet God is forbearing and is always there willing to be a constant, loving Presence in our lives (Ps73: 25) yet he can and will challenge us from time to time. Where s the best picture of God to be found? My favourite is Jesus parable of the Prodigal Son - he is like the Father who seeing his estranged son afar off runs to meet and welcome back the repentant child with open, forgiving arms! Ritchie adds Over 90 people came. We took over 600 on the draw. After expenses, we paid 300 to Lydham P.C.C. and the balance of 607 is the profit to More P.C.C. In spite of the rain and with a huge thank you to all who helped and gave donations and came, especially to Sarah Screen who had Over 90 to lunch with notice of a full hour and a half, I think it was a great success! Lydham News Holy Trinity Church, Lydham "100" Club Lydham PCC has a "100" Club lottery to raise funds to keep its 800 year old church open and provide monthly to three lucky winners a cash prize. WENTNOR FETE: Many thanks to all those who came and those who put on the Wentnor Fete! Huge amount of hard work went on putting the Fete and Dog Show on! The Rector and are immensely grateful for such tremendous support! Despite the weather, we did very well in the circumstances and raised over 3,600 - well down on the past couple of years but very good really when the forecast was so dire! Amazingly, there was literally rain on all sides of the valley but somehow we were protected!

3 SNEAD BALLOON & DOG SHOW: Sunday 2 September was amazing! Thank you Trish and Albert for all you did organizing the whole day...dog Show and Balloons - it all went so well! Big thanks to everyone else who came and helped! Great team effort! The Tea was especially good...wonderful cakes and so many helping in the kitchen! Karen weaved her magic as ever when it came to ticket sales! 4 TWENTY YEARS AGO! Norbury had a successful Flower Festival raising 3,200! A Race Evening would be held at the Inn on the Green for the Ratlinghope Restoration Fund; there was a Report of a Taize Pilgrimage by Matthew Jones; the Bishop of Hereford wrote about our lower nature having attended a London Peace Conference; Clunbury was enjoying new hymnbooks; there were successful Gift Days in the Clungunford parishes; a Steam Rally took place at Walcot. Many will have recalled a year ago when she was able to celebrate her 100the birthday at Lydham Village Hall, an event she had long looked forward to! Everyone was pleased that on the day she was well and in very good form! She fully enjoyed the occasion surrounded by family and friends. A summary of her life follows but, as her Parish Priest since 2000, as I said at her funeral, I wish to record our deep sense of gratitude for all the support and love she gave to St Peter s, More for over 50 years as PCC member and much more! Many will remember her well into her nineties still helping out at Summer Fete stalls! Si monumentum requires, circumspice for a memorial look around you, and so it was some four years ago that Miss Bullock proposed that the More PCC get on with the job of replastering and repainting the church after many years of fundraising - and the job was brilliantly done typical of the drive and determination that characterised her life, a long one in which she showed great charm, consideration and sympathy for others. Emma had a deep and abiding Christian faith. At her funeral it was with a deep sense of thankfulness to God that her life was celebrated at More Church and that she should be laid to rest in the churchyard with her late sister. Here is a summary of a life originally delivered at her 100 th birthday Emma Bullock was born in Glasgow on the 1 st September 1911, one of six children. In 1934 the family moved to Shrewsbury, where Emma started her nurse training, living in the nurse s home at the Royal Salop Infirmary. On successfully completing three years training and gaining State registration in 1937, Emma was awarded the Gold Medal for all her hard work. In 1940 Emma was promoted to Ward Sister and in 1941 to Casualty Sister. When the late Matron of the Royal Salop Infirmary, Miss Evans, decided to establish a Nurses League in 1944, she invited Sister Emma Bullock to join her. Emma took on the post of League Secretary a position she held until She remained a Committee Member until In 1946 Emma decided she wanted a career change and made the decision to become the Companion to Lady More, wife of Sir Jasper More. She moved with them to Netley Hall, Dorrington in 1946, and again to Linley Hall, Bishop s Castle, in Eventually retiring in 1997, Emma moved with her sister to Linley Lodge, where she stayed until her sister s death. In 2005 Emma moved to what would be her final home - Abbeyfield House in Bishops Castle. It was here on 1 st September 2011 that she celebrated her 100 th Birthday with family, friends, residents and staff from Abbeyfield House. Some guests travelling from as far away as Australia. Emma was extremely pleased also to have lived to receive her much coveted 100 th Birthday Card from Her Majesty the Queen. Emma confessed to having had a wonderful life, of which she would not have changed a thing. Miss Emma Bullock was considered a True Lady. The funeral of Lavinia Emilie Snodin (93) took place at Churchstoke on Thursday 28 June. Lavinia grew up in the Midlands and had a distinguished War record. She joined the WAAF and worked on RADA which was just coming into operation (and which along with Spitfires and Hurricanes saved us the WW2) She told the story how in Scotland in 1941 she tracked in a lone Messerschmitt Bf110 when she told her superiors she was quietly sidelined did somebody know something? The Messerschmitt Bf110 was being flown by Hitler s deputy Rudolph Hess on an abortive Peace Mission or was it? No-one has been very clear what Hess was up to! In Post-War years, Lavinia worked for BEAand in Hotel Reception. She was always very good with people. She was devoted to her family, having many nieces and nephews. In latter years, in the 1980s, she came to live at Churchstoke at Hall Bank, was keen on Art and Pottery, fond of animals, she kept a donkey. She remained active and outgoing to the end, and in her final weeks, her Carer described her as an inspiration to the elderly!
