2 MAY 24, 2015 Pentecost - Memorial Day Weekend EZEKIEL 37:1-14 The prophet gives voice to God s deep desire to encourage the people following an Exile that has devastated their hopes.. ACTS 2:1-21 Months following the resurrection, the disciples gather as commanded to receive a gift beyond comprehension: God s own Spirit. WHAT IS PENTECOST? Pentecost literally means 50 days and it refers first to the feast that comes fifty days after the Passover, a Jewish holiday celebrating the deliverance of Israel from Egypt and the coming of the Angel of Death. Christians now celebrate this time marking the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church. It follows 50 days after Easter. For those who may not know, you can find restrooms in our Fellowship Hall or the Education Building (immediately behind the Sanctuary). You can find our nursery in the Education Building as well, staffed by both a paid worker and a volunteer. Any of our ushers or greeters will answer further questions you have or find someone who can! 2 SERVICE OF WORSHIP Sunday, May 24, :00 a.m. Worship on Sunday morning differs from the Sunday night service in several important ways. The Processional is an important visual representation of the theme. The bulletin serves as the common guide for the flow of the service as opposed to a screen for detailing liturgy. We make use of the Celebration Hymnal, primarily, as well as music from other sources. While leadership for the service is done principally through the pastor and choir, the responsibility of interpreting God's Word is shared by all. But for all the differences, one thing that is the same between the services is the goal of glorifying God. BUILD Prepare for the Word PROCESSIONAL, PRELUDE & CANDLELIGHTING WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS INTROIT Sweet, Sweet Spirit *CALL TO WORSHIP (based on Zechariah 4:6) God draws us from all the places we know, from the concerns that we bear, from all that would distract us to come together in faith. Let us be called to worship. Leader: How shall we accomplish all God means for us to do? People: In what ways shall we gather our strength, our resources, our skills? Leader: How shall we honor the gifts God has provided?. People: In what ways shall we demonstrate our gratitude to God? Leader: By what power shall our destiny as God s people be realized? People: Not by might. Not by power. But by my Spirit, says the Lord of Hosts. *HYMN OF PRAISE Spirit Song #384 *CALL TO CONFESSION We confess our sins because we should. God forgives because God chooses. Let us live into God s mercy and confess our sins together. Let us pray the Prayer written in your guides to worship.

3 *PRAYER OF CONFESSION We are sorry, God, for the things we allow to get into us, for the things we allow to inspire us instead of you. We are sorry for taking the availability of your Spirit for granted and for thinking just being here is enough. Help us exercise the breath of God you place into us all and to recognize where your Spirit is at work, even if it is not here in this place with us. May this birthday celebration of your Church be full of our actions responding to your love and making real your grace for many. In the Great Name of your Holy Spirit may we so live... *SILENT PRAYER *ASSURANCE OF GRACE Leader: God sent Jesus to answer the question our sins made evident. My brothers and sisters in Christ, believe the good news of the Gospel! People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Leader: The Peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you. SERVICE OF WORSHIP Sunday, May 24, :00 p.m. The Hawfields Alive! Worship service takes place in the Fellowship Hall. While a bit more experimental, this service is rooted in Scripture and the idea that God is relevant now more than ever! Use of multimedia and songs from multiple sources, skits and other ways of worshipping and learning about God are a big part of this tradition now in its 14th year! 4

A sandwich lunch (drinks included) will be provided and a donation of $4-$5 will be requested to help offset the cost of the lunch. Please let David know if you are able to attend in order to make plans for the lunch. In addition, if you have any question/s that you would like answered regarding the shepherd process, please let David know so he can address it at the training. CHURCH (during the morning service) and Hawfields Hangout (during the evening service). This is a program for our children aged 3 through 2nd grade. Following the children s sermon, the children go to the education building for a Bible story and age appropriate activity. The leader brings the children back to worship following the sermon. A lesson plan and all needed materials are provided for you. 7 As the Ezekiel passage is read, make a blowing sound or the noise of wind where indicated. The word for wind is interchangeable in its meaning for wind, breath and spirit. This exercise will help you to hear this the way Ezekiel s original hearers might have. EZEKIEL 37:1-14 Valley of dry bones 1 The Lord s power overcame me, and while I was in the Lord s (BLOW), he led me out and set me down in the middle of a certain valley. It was full of bones. 2 He led me through them all around, and I saw that there were a great many of them on the valley floor, and they were very dry. 3 He asked me, Human one, can these bones live again? I said, Lord God, only you know. 4 He said to me, Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, Dry bones, hear the Lord s word! 5 The Lord God proclaims to these bones: I am about to put (BLOW) in you, and you will live again. 6 I will put sinews on you, place flesh on you, and cover you with skin. When I put (BLOW) in you, and you come to life, you will know that I am the Lord. 7 I prophesied just as I was commanded. There was a great noise as I was prophesying, then a great quaking, and the bones came together, bone by bone. 8 When I looked, suddenly there were sinews on them. The flesh appeared, and then they were covered over with skin. But there was still no (BLOW) in them. 9 He said to me, Prophesy to the (BLOW); prophesy, human one! Say to the (BLOW), The Lord God proclaims: Come from the four (BLOW), (BLOW)! (BLOW) into these dead bodies and let them live. 10 I prophesied just as he commanded me. When the (BLOW) entered them, they came to life and stood on their feet, an extraordinarily large company. 11 He said to me, Human one, these bones are the entire house of Israel. They say, Our bones are dried up, and our hope has perished. We are completely finished. 12 So now, prophesy and say to them, The Lord God proclaims: I m opening your graves! I will raise you up from your graves, my people, and I will bring you to Israel s fertile land. 13 You will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and raise you up from your graves, my people. 14 I will put my (BLOW) in you, and you will live. I will plant you on your fertile land, and you will know that I am the Lord. I ve spoken, and I will do it. This is what the Lord says. (based on the Common English Bible) 7
