SERVICE OF WORSHIP Saturday, December 21, :00 p.m. Worship on Saturday night differs from the traditional Sunday service in several important ways. Because of the use of the projector, the detail of the liturgy is on a screen rather than printed. For this reason, it s important to use the screen in order to participate well. Songs are shared together using the screen and led by the Worship Team. The Prayer of Confession is often done as a visual experience rather than a recited prayer. And from time to time the sermon may feel unconventional. Music, of course, is the principal difference between the services. But for all of these differences, one thing that is the same between them is the goal of glorifying God. There will be NO HAWFIELDS HANGOUT OR JR. CHURCH this weekend due to the Cantata. CIRCLE #2 will meet January 13, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the home of Harriett Covington. "For where two or three gather in my name, there I am with them" (Matthew 18:20). THE PRAYER COMMITTEE is asking that you reach out to another person in the church and establish a prayer partner! All that's required is that you check in with each other on a regular basis and pray for each other. What a great way to share your needs, celebrations, hopes, and thanksgivings! The Session has been doing this over the past year and it has proven to be a rich source of connection between folks. Call someone and connect today! THE COMPASSION COMMITTEE is looking for new members: men, women, young & mature! We are looking for new ideas as to how to continue to minister to the congregation and community in a loving and compassionate way. Please consider joining...it is a very rewarding committee to serve on and we need your gifts and talents! Please talk to Sandy Muller or Ellen Lawrence if you have questions on the committee's responsibilities. DON'T FORGET! We still need your Christmas stories for the Christmas Eve Services. If you are interested in sharing one for our video camera please see David Ealy as soon as possible. Thanks SERVICE OF WORSHIP Sunday, December 22, :00 a.m. Worship on Sunday morning differs from the Saturday night service in several important ways. The bulletin serves as the common guide for the flow of the service as opposed to a screen for detailing liturgy. We make use of the Celebration Hymnal, primarily, as well as music from other sources. While leadership for the service is done primarily through the pastor and choir (as opposed to the Worship Team) the responsibility of interpreting God's Word is shared by all. But for all the differences, one thing that is the same between them is the goal of glorifying God. PREPARATION FOR THE WORD PRELUDE & CANDLE LIGHTING WELCOME, ANNOUNCEMENTS & FELLOWSHIP TIME CONGREGATIONAL INTROIT Angels We Have Heard on High pg. 278 *ADVENT WREATH LIGHTING: Dancing with Peace! (Psalm 30) Leader: God s anger lasts for only a second, but God s favor lasts a lifetime. Weeping may stay all night, but by morning, joy! All: You changed our mourning into dancing. You took off our funeral clothes and dressed us up in joy and peace! Leader: so that our whole being might sing praises to you and never stop. All: Lord, our God, we will give thanks to you forever! Advent Prayer: Lord, we give you thanks that the peace we ve been searching for has come. We give you thanks that the life you ve promised is possible. We give you thanks that, with the arrival of Christ, you bless us and keep us, your face shines on us and is gracious to us. In Christ, you smile on us and give us peace, now and forever more. Amen. THE PRESENTATION OF THE WORD IN SONG: THE CANTATA Silent Night! Holy Night! arr. Russell Mauldin Love s Pure Light Opener (Silent Night! Holy Night! With Birthday of a King) Son of God, love s pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth. In the little village of Bethlehem, there lay a Child one day, And the sky was bright with a holy light o er the place where Jesus lay. Alleluia! O how the angels sang, Alleluia! How it rang! And the sky was bright with a holy light, twas the birthday of a King. Twas a humble birthplace, but O how much God gave to us that day. From the manger bed what a path was led, what a perfect, holy way. Let There Be Light with We Three Kings From the beginning the Father, had a magnificent plan, revealed through the law and the prophets to fulfill the redemption of man. He spoke after centuries of silence, in the midst of a still, starry night. And Emmanuel came down among us, and the Father said Let there be light! Let there be light, let it shine bright, piercing the darkness with dazzling white. Hope for the hopeless was born on that night, when God sent His Son, and said, Let there be light. 3

4 People who walked in great darkness, gathered from near and a-far, shepherds with flocks in their keeping, three kings who followed a startogether the poor and the richest, witnessed that Bethlehem night, and the sky full of angels announcing, the birth of the glorious Light. We who are his have this calling, to praise Him and make His name known. So one day the presence of Jesus shines in every heart and every home. Star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright, westward leading still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light. My Soul Magnifies the Lord with Angels, from the Realms of Glory Good news of great joy, for every woman, every man. This will be a sign to you, a baby born in Bethlehem. Come and worship, do not be afraid. A company of angels, Glory in the highest!, and on the earth a peace among, those on whom His favor rests. Come and worship, do not be afraid. My soul, my soul, magnifies the Lord. He has done great things for me. Unto you a Child is born Unto us a Son is given. Let every heart prepare His throne, let every nation under heaven. Wonderful, Counselor, Everlasting Father! Worship Christ the newborn King! 4 Blessings We pray for blessings, we pray for peace, Comfort for family, protection while we sleep. We pray for healing, for prosperity, we pray for Your mighty hand, to ease our suffering. And all the while You hear each spoken need, yet love us way too much to give us lesser things. Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops, what if your healing comes through tears? What if a thousand sleepless nights is what it takes to know You re near? And what if trials in this life are Your mercies in disguise? We pray for wisdom, Your voice to hear. We cry in anger when we cannot feel You near. We doubt Your goodness, we doubt Your love, As if every promise from Your word is not enough. And all the while, you hear each desperate plea, and long that we d have faith to believe. When friends betray us, when darkness seems to win, we know that pain reminds this heart, that this is not our home! What if my greatest disappointments, or the aching of this life, is a revealing of a greater thirst this world can t satisfy? And what if trials of this life, the rain, the storms, the hardest nights, are your mercies in disguise? SERVICE TO OUR COMMUNITY The Session, in our efforts to be a good neighbor and servants to the cause of Christ, have agreed to allow our space to be used to support Alcoholics Anonymous. As some of you may know, this group is dedicated to dealing in concrete and effective ways with the problem of alcoholism and its destructive force on individuals, families and communities. We are proud to host a very active, co-ed group of folks who are using the Fleming Classroom 9

5 30 At that very moment, Jesus recognized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and said, Who touched my clothes? 31 His disciples said to him, Don t you see the crowd pressing against you? Yet you ask, Who touched me? 32 But Jesus looked around carefully to see who had done it. 33 The woman, full of fear and trembling, came forward. Knowing what had happened to her, she fell down in front of Jesus and told him the whole truth. 34 He responded, Daughter, your faith has healed you; go in peace, healed from your disease. 35 While Jesus was still speaking with her, messengers came from the synagogue leader s house, saying to Jairus, Your daughter has died. Why bother the teacher any longer? 36 But Jesus overheard their report and said to the synagogue leader, Don t be afraid; just keep trusting. 37 He didn t allow anyone to follow him except Peter, James, and John, James brother. 38 They came to the synagogue leader s house, and he saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, What s all this commotion and crying about? The child isn t dead. She s only sleeping. 40 They laughed at him, but he threw them all out. Then, taking the child s parents and his disciples with him, he went to the room where the child was. 41 Taking her hand, he said to her, Talitha koum, which means, Young woman, get up. 42 Suddenly the young woman got up and began to walk around. She was 12 years old. They were shocked! 43 He gave them strict orders that no one should know what had happened. Then he told them to give her something to eat Common English Bible It may seem odd to look at a passage like this during Advent or in anticipation of Christmas. But Advent is about the arrival of Jesus Christ and this story not only speaks to that, but also to the effect the mercy of God has on us. For the unnamed woman and Jarius, Christ's arrival fires their imaginations. In their desperate situations they seek out Jesus by his reputation. They both come wanting Jesus to rectify what they experience as impossible brokenness. Christ's arrival means one last chance to be healed. They boldly embrace this possibility. But what does Christ s arrival mean for the healing of our community? What do we hope changes for Hawfields as we welcome Jesus into our midst? What wounds must close or what ailments must be cured? One thing we must recognize is that the woman and Jarius both had to "come clean" about what they wanted: the woman after the fact and Jarius before the fact. What are we willing to admit needs to be fixed by God? Are we willing for our wounds, our sins, our violations to be out in the open? A real curiosity in this passage is the fact that, at first, Jesus calls out the woman in the midst of the crowd and then warns Jarius and his family not to reveal how his daughter got healed. What gives? I submit that in both cases Jesus is doing what Jesus does best: pointing to God. In the woman's case, he responds, "Your faith has made you well." in Jarius' case, he wants God to get the glory. Jesus has nothing to prove. But openness is the only way we prove that we are committed to seeing ourselves God's way. We can want to change. But real change only comes when we're accountable for seeing that change through. We must be ready at all times to approach the arriving Jesus in our midst with all that needs healing. In these final days of Advent, let the healing possibilities of God's mercy be the real gift we anticipate. May our real decorations be the delight of God's peace washing over us. May our preparations for Christmas be more than looking for the baby in the manger. Let us look for Christ's arrival to heal us, heal our land, heal our world. Amen. Tell the World There is cause for celebration, born in Bethlehem tonight. Come and behold the Gift of heaven in the glow of stable light. Tell the darkness dawn has broken. Tell the silence Love has spoken. Tell the waiting we will wait no more. Tell the world that Christ is born! Tell the hopeless He s the Promise, now fulfilled before their eyes. Tell the restless in His presence, every need is satisfied. Glory to the newborn King! Tell the wounded and the weary, He has come to be their peace. Tell the desperate soul in mourning, every tear He will redeem. Shepherd s Quake Underscore Infant Holy Medley (Silent Night! Holy Night!/ Infant Holy, Infant Lowly/We Will Glorify) all is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and Child. Holy Infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace. shepherds quake at the sight. Glories stream from heaven a-far. Heavenly hosts sing alleluia. Christ, the Savior is born! Christ the Savior is born! Infant holy, Infant lowly, for His bed a cattle stall. Oxen lowing, little knowing, Christ, the Babe, is Lord of all. Swift are winging angels singing, Noels ringing, tidings bringing; Christ, the Babe, is Lord of all. Swift are winging angels singing, Noels ringing, tidings bringing; Christ, the Babe, is Lord of all. We will glorify the King of Kings, We will glorify the Lamb, We will glorify the Lord of Lords, who is the great I AM. Hallelujah to the King of kings, Hallelujah to the Lamb, Hallelujah to the Lord of Lords, who is the great I AM. What Christmas Really Means with Birthday of a King Alleluia! O how the angels sang, Alleluia! How it rang! And the sky was bright with the holy light, twas the birthday of a King! We re invited to the sacred manger where Glory sleeps upon the hay. To bow in wonder at the mystery of all that is fulfilled this day. O Hallelujah! Where there was darkness, now heaven s Light has intervened. A Child is born and we watch breathless, to see what Christmas really means. We re invited to relive the journey from Bethlehem to Calvary. The Lamb will lead us to the hillside where every willing soul is freed. 5

6 O Hallelujah, He dies to save us and we fall silent at the scene. O pierce our hearts to feel the sorrow. This is what Christmas really means. We re invited to the tomb now empty, for dawn has come and hope is here. The curse is swallowed up in victory, and there is nothing left to fear. The wise men came from a-far. They were guided by a shining star To see King Jesus where He lay in a manger filled with hay. Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere. Go, tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born. *HYMN OF SENDING Dancing with Peace by M. Farrow Take one step, surrender and bow your head Open up your clenched hands and forgive Turn, turn around the kingdom has come near Rejoice, again I say, Rejoice May our lives sway at only your rhythm Triune God we will dance with you O Hallelujah, Jesus has risen. Come sing the song of the redeemed. As we proclaim to men and angels. Behold what Christmas really means! O Hallelujah, we ll shout forever. Love s final chapter is complete. And He will reign and we will worship. O Hallelujah to the King! Tell His Wonder Finale (Silent Night! Holy Night!/Jesus, What a Wonderful Child/Go, Tell It on the Mountain) Son of God, love s pure light, Radiant beams from Thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth. Jesus, Jesus, oh, what a wonderful Child! Jesus, Jesus, so lowly, meek and mild. New life, new hope, new joy He brings, Won t you listen to the angels sing? Glory, glory, glory to the new-born King! He was heralded by the angels, born in a lowly manger. The virgin Mary was His mother, and Joseph was His earthly father. RESPONSE TO THE WORD MOMENT FOR MISSION: The Joy Gift Offering OFFERTORY & OFFERING We place the time for the Offering in the part of the service reserved for responding to the Word. This is intentional. For us there is no initiation. We love because God first loved us. We have grace because God in Christ died for us. We give because God has so richly give to us. Let us respond with joy, then, to God with the symbol of our gratitude. *DOXOLOGY Praise God from whom all blessings flow Praise God all creatures here below Praise God above ye heavenly hosts Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & LORD S PRAYER Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory forever. Amen. *As you are able, please stand Chorus: Let s dance with a love, that sacrifices Let s dance with mercy, that heals all wrongs Let s dance with justice and dance with praise Let s dance with all of our voices raised Find us here Waiting and dancing with peace Dancing with peace until you come Reach out your arms to love one another Hold close to your bosom the mourners that weep Look past idol hills and pray without ceasing Rejoice, again I say, Rejoice May our lives sway at only your rhythm Triune God we will dance with you Bridge: Glory to God in the highest And peace on earth to all whom God favors *CHARGE & BENEDICITION *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Refrain from O Come, O Come, Emmanuel Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel The mission of Hawfields Presbyterian Church is to BUILD DISCIPLES, GROW IN FAITH, and SHARE CHRIST with all. ADVENT MEDITATION: Out in the Open With the Cantata, we experience the Word in song, dance and speech. Before Christmas Eve, take time to read this brief story from Mark and its message for faith. Mark 5:21-43 Jesus heals two people 5:21Jesus crossed the lake again, and on the other side a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. 22 Jairus, one of the synagogue leaders, came forward. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet 23 and pleaded with him, My daughter is about to die. Please, come and place your hands on her so that she can be healed and live. 24 So Jesus went with him. A swarm of people were following Jesus, crowding in on him. 25 A woman was there who had been bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a lot under the care of many doctors, and had spent everything she had without getting any better. In fact, she had gotten worse. 27 Because she had heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his clothes. 28 She was thinking, If I can just touch his clothes, I ll be healed. 29 Her bleeding stopped immediately, and she sensed in her body that her illness had been healed.
