3 Blessed are you... The passive tone of the beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount in St. Matthew's Gospel must be read in concert with the mandate to act in St. Luke's version of the same event in his Sermon on the Plain. Rev. Abuna Elias Chacour is a Melkite Catholic priest who was born in Biram in Galilee (northern part of Israel). His family and fellow villagers were forced off of their land and out of their homes by the Israelis. He speaks Aramaic, the language that Jesus spoke. He translates the Beatitudes in a more proactive way. He proposes that Jesus meant: "You who are poor - who seek justice - peacemakers - get up, go ahead, do something, about your poverty - justice - peace - and you will be blessed." Complacency and timidity about our condition in life and our world is not a blessing. But blessed are those who act to benefit themselves and others. So let us get up, go ahead, do something to make life better for ourselves and others. Ash Wednesday Mass Schedule Wednesday, March 6th at 12noon & 5:30pm in English and 7pm in Spanish. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En muchos santuarios de Latinoamérica y Europa se pueden encontrar diversas ofrendas que han dejado los fieles a través de los siglos. Entre estas ofrendas es de particular relieve el exvoto. Exvoto (una frase en latín que se traduce del voto ) es el regalo que se le presenta al santo o a la santa en reconocimiento del favor recibido. Esto también se llama manda. Los exvotos o mandas toman varias formas desde pequeñas medallas en forma de la parte del cuerpo que fue sanado hasta pinturas del milagro concedido. El exvoto más antiguo en América es de una pintura mandada a hacer por Hernán Cortés en honor de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de Extremadura (España). Esta imagen reconocía el hecho de ser salvado del piquete de un alacrán mientras estaba en México. Lamentablemente esta pintura se extravió en el siglo XIX. En realidad el santo o la santa no necesita el exvoto pero los creyentes sí. Estas mandas nos recuerdan el poder de la intercesión divina en la vida humana. BIENAVENTURADOS O DICHOSOS Cuando pensamos en la palabra bienaventuranza pensamos en el discurso de hoy del Evangelio según Lucas, o en el más familiar según Mateo (que comienza Dichosos lo que tienen espíritu de pobre... ). En realidad, las bienaventuranzas ocurren en los profetas y evangelios. Hoy, en Jeremías (con un eco en el salmo) oímos: Bendito el hombre que confía en el Señor (Jeremías 17:7). Luego de su resurrección en el Evangelio de san Juan, Cristo proclama: Dichosos los que creen sin haber visto! (Juan 20:29). Los evangelistas colocaron estos dichos por todos los evangelios como cortos recordatorios sobre las caracteríscas de quien sigue a Cristo, características que ayudarán a diseminar la Buena Nueva en esta vida y llevarnos a la dicha eterna en la próxima. En latín, los santos son llamados Beati o Beatos porque son aquellos que viven la vida feliz descrita por Jesús en los evangelios. SACRAMENTOS Bautismo para los Niños: Bautismos para niños menores de 7 años se celebran durante el año (excepto en el tiempo de Cuaresma). Se requiere que los papás y padrinos asistan a una preparación. (Antes de escoger padrinos les pedimos que sean casados por la iglesia o solteros y tengan el sacramento de la Confirmación) Catequesis de Adultos (R.I.C.A.) Domingos 10:00 am. Los adultos pueden recibir los sacramentos del Bautismo, Primera Comunión y la Confirmación después de un tiempo de formación. Sacramentos para Niños y Adolescentes:Todos los niños deben asistir a las clases de catecismo cada miércoles a las 6:30pm. (Inglés). Quinceañeras NO es un Sacramento pero es un sacramental: Se pueden celebrar cualquier sábado mientas esté disponible la Iglesia, excepto durante la Cuaresma.

We would also like for you to pick up a card at Mass or the church office this week to write them a note of encouragement! for our Parish Healing Mission All are invited to our 3-day mission presented by Deacon Keith Strohm Monday-Wednesday, February 18-20th from 6:30-8:00 each evening in the church. Free child care (which includes dinner) will be provided in the Parish Hall each evening beginning at 6pm but we ask you to call the office for reservations. for our men The first session of the reinvigorated Men s Prayer Breakfast was a great success! men met for breakfast, fellowship, prayer and a talk given by John Congleton. All men are invited to attend each month on the second Saturday from 7:30-9am in the Parish Hall. The next breakfast is scheduled for March 9th.
