1 The God s love flowing through us into the world Monthly Newsletter of South River UMC May 2015 Inside This Issue From The Pastor Attendance Church Financial Reports Adm. Council Minutes Birthdays & Anniversaries Prayer Concerns Announcements Monthly Events Calendar South River UMC 2880 South River Ch. Rd. Woodleaf, NC (704) Randy Powell, Pastor Parsonage:(704) Cell: (704) randypowell@southriverumc.org Robinette Steele, Preschool Director Home: (704) preschool@southriverumc.org Linda Cranford, Church Secretary Home: (704) Cell: (704) linda@southriverumc.org Ann Cartner, Financial Recording Secretary Cell (336) ann@southriverumc.org Traci Steele, Church Tresurer Home: (704) Cell (704) traci@southriverumc.org From The Pastor... TRUST I believe most of our church family has seen our granddaughter Mary at church. Recently Elizabeth and I were taking Mary to a playground near her house. We had to walk a short distance from the car to the playground area. Elizabeth and Mary began to play together on the playground equipment. I noticed how Mary had to trust her Mamaw as she pushed her high in the swing, as she slid down into Elizabeth s arms from the big slide, and how she held on to the Monkey Bars as Elizabeth stood below her. The way Mary trust Elizabeth and did what she said, is how I am to trust God. Whatever He says to do or where He leads, I must follow. How is your trust walk with God? Do you have the obedient trust that God desires us to have? When we hear His voice, we are to immediately respond by doing what He said to do. In our obedient trust to Him, God s will is completed and we are the instruments He desires to use, but it only comes through obedience. I agree with what Paul said concerning the world in Acts 21:13 The issue in Jerusalem is not what they do to me, whether arrest me or murder me, but what the Master Jesus does through my obedience. Child-like trust is no questions asked trust Child-like trust is I know you have my best interest trust Child-like trust is my life is in your hands trust Matthew 18:3 Let us have child-like trust in our heavenly Father Love in Christ, Pastor Randy Worship...average attendance for the last month was 109. We have Contemporary Worship at 9:15am and Traditional Worship at 11:30am each Sunday. Check us out on the web... Life Groups..Life Groups & kids programs for all ages are held at 10:30am each Sunday morning. The average attendance for the past month was 55.
2 Church Financial Report March 2015 Estimated Monthly Budget Needs $14, Monthly Collections $13, Monthly Expenses $16, Collections YTD $41, Expenses YTD $41, Missions Financial Report March 2015 Missions, Food Pantry & RX Account Balance Forward $16, Collections - $ Expenses $ Current Balance $16, WRBTA Offering Collections - $ Administrative Council Minutes Sunday, April 12, 2015 With 15 people in attendance, Larry Cranford (CP) called the meeting to order. Susan Cobb opened with prayer. Larry thanked Traci Steele for filling in for him last month. Susannah Kelty (Sec.) read the minutes from the March 2015 meeting and they were approved as read. Traci Steele (Treas.) handed out the financial statement and went over the information. She reported that Fifth Sunday offerings affected the way the accounts posted for Missions, Preschool, WRBTA, and Youth, but these accounts are balanced. Parsonage mowing and church mowing were switched on the report. Traci will correct that. The Library Fund has not been closed yet because there is still $3.83 remaining. Traci will take care of that. Collections for March were short because we missed the first Sunday because of ice. Fifth Sunday offering went to the Cemetery Fund. That leaves the Year-to- Date total short by about $3000. Missions: Mike Aistrop (CP) reported that the Missions Committee will donate $500 to Alex Hunter s summer mission trip to El Salvador. Youth: Youth did a great job in the Maundy Thursday service. The Maundy Thursday offering will go to Food Pantry. They have a Youth Retreat coming up on April Trustees: Ashley Webb (CP) has been researching options for for a UV water treatment system. It would cost $500-$1000, plus replacement of lamps. It is designed to deal with coliform. A residential model would be sufficient for our church needs. In order to cover the whole church, the system would need to be installed as near the well as possible. We would still need to get quarterly sampling. A motion was made, seconded and carried to allow the Trustees to exceed their budget limit in order to buy and install a UV water treatment system for the church. Finance: Jered Webb (CP) explained the complexities of the yearly audit, and suggested that all church money be at the same bank to simplify the auditing process. Traci explained that Ann Cartner (Financial Sec.) deposits money into various bank accounts, depending on the designation of the donations coming in. It would simplify things for Ann, if these deposits were made at one bank, rather than several. Jered moved to start migrating all accounts to Allegacy. The motion was seconded and carried. It was agreed that Jered and the Finance Committee can decide with Robinette Steele that she only needs to report donations in her yearly report rather than monthly. Preschool: Traci Steele reported for Robinette Steele (Preschool Director) that registration is full for next year. Cemetery: David Lee Johnson (CP) plans to dress up the front yard, since that is under his job description. Children s Ministry: Sherry Crider (CP) reported that planning for VBS is still moving forward. The missions project for VBS will be decorating reusable shopping bags and collecting food to donate to Food Pantry. (Mike Aistrop said to bring green beans, corn, sweet peas, tuna, or vienna sausages.) Old Business: Barry Atwell reported that follow-up water samples from the well came back good, so the church is now back on a quarterly sampling schedule. Mike Aistrop reported that he has given Traci Steele the information she needs for Barbara Browning s headstone. Mike or Jody Steele will order it this week. Pastor Randy talked to the insurance company, and they said the only people who are bonded are paid employees: treasurer and financial recording secretary. Stewards who count the offering are NOT bonded. He
3 asked the insurance company to mail a policy to the church. Jered recommended that the church invite an insurance agent to meet with the Admin Council to explain options for bonding people with decisionmaking or financial responsibilities in the church. Pastor Randy will contact the insurance company to ask them to send an agent to meet with us. Ashley Webb reported that the Trustees just reviewed the policy last year. Youth have requested that June 7 be the date for the combined Youth Sunday and Graduation Recognition Sunday. Jered Webb reported that Ann Cartner is taking checks to her workplace and scanning them there. So Jered did not pursue the purchase of a scanner for checks. Pastor s Report: Pastor Randy reported that the Easter Services were well attended. He gave dates for upcoming events: Worship Outside the Box will be on May 17. The next Fifth Sunday is May 31, so the Fifth Sunday Social will occur as usual during the Life Group hour. The Fifth Sunday Community Singing will be held at Needmore Baptist Church at 6 pm. Graduate Recognition and Youth Sunday will be June 7. Annual Conference will be June 21. Dates for VBS (July Family Nights) are July 7, 14, 21 and 28. Jered suggested that worship committee might like to plan a song service sometime this year. It could be done on one of the Sundays when Pastor Randy is gone -- maybe conference Sunday in June? New Business: Payments for background checks for Safe Sanctuary come from the Church Program Functions line item. Traci Steele pointed out that the church needs to use a system to follow up on people who are missing attendance at services. She asked that we pray about implementing a system that will work for us to do a better job of following up on our people. Susan Cobb mentioned that the SPRC has also discussed this issue and agreed that it is important. The suggestion was made to consider a family model that spreads the work across the church family. The Council reaffirmed that our connections with each other are very important, and agreed to pray about strengthening this ministry. Pastor Randy and Susan will meet to consider possible solutions. Jered made a motion to adjourn. April made a second and the meeting was adjourned. Pastor Randy closed with prayer. Respectfully submitted, Larry Cranford, Chairperson Susannah Kelty, Secretary Newsletter Option The monthly church newsletters can be ed to you. This reduces our paper, copying and mailing expense.
