3 Messiah Faith Story for January 2015 Spirit, lead me to where my trust is without borders. Nepal Dalton Hayes writes us this letter: I am now a senior at Simpson College in Indianola. My faith has grown so much since I have been in college, and I am looking for ways to continue growing. On a soccer trip to Costa Rica, I was blessed to volunteer in an orphanage. It was an amazing experience and it left my heart craving more. I pray that God will fill me with a passion and fire to serve him, and that I will be provided with a path to continue this service. I heard this message again in one of my favorite songs: Set a fire down in my soul, that I can t contain and I can t control. I want more of you, God, I want more of you, God. There s no place I would rather be than here in your love. I feel called to spend all my life in God s love and to share His word and love with people who otherwise may never experience God and his grace. And I feel called to travel to Nepal to share His love. God has blessed me with the opportunity to serve in Nepal this May, on a mission trip to share His word and love with people who may never have experienced God s grace. I will be in Nepal May 7-22, with a team from Salt Company, from Indianola, Iowa. We will be working in a juice factory in Katmandu, the capital city, and then traveling into the mountains to help set up a new Christian church. We will travel to Pokhara, home of the World Peace Pagoda, and volunteer in a Tibetan refugee camp. The last six days of the trip, our team will hike into the Annapurna Mountains with local sherpas. We will ascend to over 14,000 feet, with the mountains around us as high as 27,000 feet! God has given me a beautiful life, and I am confident He will continue to assist me in my journey. I am raising financial support for this trip, about $3500, and am praying that God will help me raise this money. If you wish to support me on this faith venture, I am asking for your prayers that we have a successful trip and return home safely. Any financial support you wish to give me can be sent to New Heights Church, 210 W Ashland, Indianola, Iowa 50125, with my name on the memo line. Thank you for reading my letter and for your prayers. If you want to talk to me some more about my mission and my faith journey, please call my mother, Jana Hayes, and she will give you my phone number. Yours in Christ, Dalton Hayes Sr. High Youth Group Wednesday, January 28th, 7:30-8:30pm-Youth Room Registration is happening now!! 4 Messiah Preschool News Greetings from the Children s Wing of the church. The BIG NEWS for 2015 is that Registration is underway for the sessions. Our list will start to fill up and we would love to invite your child or grandchild or a neighbor to come join us. If you would like a registration form or need more information, please call Ms. Margie (our Director) at ext. 2. As always, thank you for your support of our preschool and its mission to Shape Futures. Have a Blessed and Happy 2015!!! From the Pastor s Desk I am looking over my shoulder at the year that has ended. I see gains and losses, and much that has yet to be categorized and summed up. Wayne is officially retired from Faith Lutheran, retired for the third or fourth time since I ve known him. Both my children are now married. I have grandchildren who can say my name. Messiah is living up to her mission, again, for yet another year, her 156th, I think. Roger Hatteberg says it right: Messiah will always make it through. He s right, thankfully. God bless you for being the church you are. Bless you for your creativity and your good, common sense. Bless you for loving the children in your midst. Bless you for keeping watch over eachother, and for keeping vigil with our friends in Liberia. Bless you for singing in worship, in the choir and in the congregation and in Sunday school. Bless you for meals, for brown bread, and for a thousand poinsettias. Bless you for filling the sanctuary with quilts, and the back of the social hall with boxes of food for the hungry. And the Salvation Army barrels and the mitten tree. Bless you for discovering a new sidewalk. Bless you for getting to all those meetings..you get the idea! St. Paul writes to his favorite congregation, in Philippi, on the north coast of Greece: I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the One who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. And it is right for me to think this way about all of you.for all of you share in God s grace in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. The Lutheran Study Bible calls Philippians Paul s most joyful letter. At the end of his letter, Paul gives his advice to the Philippians: Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things, keep on doing them and the God of peace will be with you. We lose things at our house, and I spend a lot of time looking for those lost things. But we also have a sign on the wall, a Martin Luther quote: I have gained and lost many things in my life. But I have found that whatever I have placed in God s hands will be mine forever. Looking ahead, at 2015, we ll place Messiah in God s hands, for another year. What we pray for, and what we work for, in the new year, will happen under God s grace. I m sure of it. Pastor Susanne PAGE 4 V O L U M E L IX, IS S U E 1
