4 Messiah s adult mission trip to Detroit, a group faith story I have been hoping to begin a new tradition at Messiah for some years, a mission trip for adults and families. We have a start. We re going to spend a week this coming summer, from Sunday July 15 through Saturday, July 21, working on urban preservation and community gardens in inner city Detroit. Detroit was a bustling auto manufacturing center when I lived there in the summer of That was the summer of the Detroit riots, and I have stories to tell, because I was there. This will be my first trip back there since then. Detroit has changed: the auto industry has flagged, whole neighborhoods are literally gone, some blocks are nearly returned to countryside, and those families who have stayed are asking for our help. Rippling Hope is a Detroit non-profit that has been collaborating with city neighborhood associations for years, stabilizing homes, cleaning neighborhoods, and supporting urban farming. The week we are there, we will stay in Rippling Hope s mission house and work different projects every day. Rippling Hope s staff will feed us, equip us, and supervise our work. And yes, I am calling this a faith venture. Kelly Benz, who took Messiah s youth to the last national youth gathering in Detroit, says that when they did a day s service work in the city, they were safe, they were appreciated, and they got at least as much of a boost in faith as did the people they were sent to help. Mission trips have a way of doing this they are serious faith journeys! The more we give away of ourselves, the more we receive from God and from our companions in faith. Detroit s neighborhood associations make the decisions about what work needs doing, and Rippling Hope selects the projects and invests in making mission accompaniment a good experience for volunteers. Pastor Brice Hughes, from Zion UCC in Burlington, is on Rippling Hope s board, and Zion s group is going to Detroit the week of June Some members of the Zion group will be coming to Messiah to meet with us on Sunday evening, March 25, 5pm, in the conference room. We are inviting members from all the area Lutheran churches to join us. The cost for each participant is $300, and we will find ways to reduce the cost for all participants. Would you like to know more? Come to the March 25 information meeting. Talk with Pastor Susanne, Dennis Wohlers in the church office, or Messiah member Joe de Jesus. And check out Rippling Hope s website, BRIDGES OUT OF POVERTY Pastor Susanne+ On February 6th the Burlington Bridges out of Poverty class graduated 7 individuals who have learned to be dependent upon their self for survival in the world s economy. The class called Getting Ahead is sponsored by different churches in the area and they help individuals and families learn how to be self-dependent instead of depending on the government, churches, food banks, and any other dependencies. They are taught the language of dependency, financial possibilities, managing family situations, and other complex situations that assist them out of poverty. This organization needs your help! One way is to take the time to prepare a meal for the next Getting Ahead Tuesday night class. Become a sponsor that provides meals or provide funding for the class. Another way to help these people is to become a Staying Ahead teammate. The graduates get linked with a teammate whose purpose is just to let them know someone cares that they continue staying ahead of poverty. I currently am a teammate as is my wife. There is no financial responsibility with this program. It is just meeting with them, talking to them, helping them with situations that just need an ear. Or even lead them in the right direction for finding solutions to their problems. What needs to be done the most is showing them a different way of life without lecturing! The Staying Ahead individuals have gotten to the point of being self-dependent and sometimes need an ear, or a smile, or just a simple how do you do? Contact me in the church office ( ) or you can contact Mona Ash in the Loft (Jefferson Street). Dennis Wohlers PAGE 4

5 Messiah Preschool SHAPING FUTURES THROUGH FAITH BASED EDUCATION 3, 4, & 5-Year-old Sessions Registration is underway for the sessions. Our list is beginning to fill up and we would love to invite your child or grandchild or a neighbor to come join us. Preschool is a very important start for our children today. It is their first glimpse at structure and learning how to form friendships. Learning is essential at all ages! The benefits of a developmentally appropriate preschool are tremendous! Growing in a Faith Based Education is icing on the cake! A new benefit of being a member of Messiah Lutheran Church is a discount in tuition for your child. I can help you with that process if you come see me. If you would like a registration form or need more information please, call Ms Margie (our Director) at ext. 2. As always, thank you for your support of our preschool and its mission to Shaping Futures through a Faith Based Education. If you are interested in providing tuition for a preschooler next session or making a donation to the preschool fund, please see Ms Margie. Happy St. Patrick s Day from Messiah Preschoolers and our Teachers. Spring is coming and we are so ready and excited! Come and share our day it will enlighten you to the joy of learning hands on!
