2 Kinsmen Connection February 2016 A Note from the Senior Pastor Since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. (Romans 3:23-25) On Sunday, February 21, we invited a Muslim speaker to come to Kinsmen to talk to our group going to the Holy Land and to anyone else who wanted to attend. We are preparing the travel group to be minorities in the midst of a Muslim majority while we are in the West Bank. (We are also preparing them to be minorities in the midst of a Jewish majority while we are in Israel by having a Jewish speaker in March.) This is the least we can do to prepare trip participants for this very different context. However, that is not the only reason for us to invite our Muslim neighbors to our church. Jesus asks us to love our neighbors (even Samaritans and Muslims and all others) and we are able to love our neighbor better when we know more about them. We can learn about similarities and significant differences when we hear about other faiths. Perhaps the most personally enriching reason why we listen and learn from other faiths is that it makes us go back to our core beliefs as Christians and hone our understanding of them. I never learned more about why I was Christian than when I studied about Islam in seminary. It was at that time that I realized most clearly the true radical message of the gospel: As Christians, we believe in a God that loves us enough to die for us. No other faith believes that! And it s not because we were great and godly people it is precisely because we were in bondage to our sins and could not free ourselves that God paid the ultimate price and gave his son to pay and to make our relationship with him right once again. Our Always Reforming study during Lent helps us zero in on the radical nature of our faith. We are saved by God s grace. God gives up power and becomes a servant obedient to death on the cross for you and me. This kind of self-giving, unconditional love is so unique and rare in our world today. Our world tells us that we can save ourselves by following all of the laws. That is not the Christian message. Paul s letter to the Romans says: since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. (Romans 3:23-25) God s relationship with us is not based on the If you do this, then I will do this proposition. The unique message of the cross is based on the Because, therefore good news: Because I love you, therefore I am giving my son to die for you. As you look at the cross during Lent and Holy Week this month, reflect on the unique message we have to share with the world. Christ died for the sins of the world: for you, for me, for our neighbors. Go love your neighbors and find ways to share this good news with them through words and deeds. He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed! 2
3 February 2016 Kinsmen Connection A new sermon series : always reforming ALWAYS Sermon Series Mar. 6 Love Mar. 13 Watch Mar. 20 Risk Always Reforming semper reformanda was a key phrase used by Martin Luther during the 16th century. His 95 theses nailed to the Wittenburg Church door in 1517 signaled a call to be a church that is always forming and reforming itself. But what does that mean? We are a forming church in that we are always teaching and learning and passing on the faith. We are reforming in that we are always trying to be a community that follows Christ today and this may look different depending on the context. Regardless, as a community, we are to be signs/ foretastes of redeemed humanity as the church wherever we find ourselves. We will be exploring what this means for us as individuals and as a community during weekend worship and midweek worship services during Lent. Easter lilies may be ordered from the Flower Committee They cost $10 each and may be dedicated in honor or in memory of a loved one. Order forms are available at the Welcome Center, or you may order online at Orders due by March 20 to be recognized in the Easter Sunday bulletin. 3
4 Kinsmen Connection February 2016 Lent is a season when the church focuses on the continual process of conversion for everyone. It is a solemn and penitential period. Lent is grounded in and modeled after the forty days Jesus spent in the desert, tempted by the devil. As people of faith, we lay aside those practices and material goods that lead us into temptation. We do this not to enamor ourselves of our own sanctity, but rather to gather with the whole Christian community as it practices its participation in the death of Christ that we might know the alleluia of the resurrection with Christ. 7 February 2016 Kinsmen Connection UPDATES This strategic team is tending to God s activity in the 5-mile radius around Kinsmen exploring how Kinsmen can become more relevant. Update from the Circle The Circle is a team of congregation members who are working to understand how Kinsmen can become more relevant in communities within a 5-mile radius of the church. Through this effort congregational leaders will be developed who will be able to hear from the perspective of other cultures and respond appropriately to what is heard. This effort is also part of Pastor Beth s Doctor of Ministry research project. Twenty-six congregation members comprise the PAR Leadership Team. This strategic team is tending to God s activity in the 5-mile radius around Kinsmen exploring how Kinsmen can become more relevant. Let s meet the PAR Leadership Team. They are: Benita Engle, Patsy Fretwell, Mark Adam, Dennis Ivey, Terry Richter, Caleb Shaw, Renee Alfaro, Bob Boller, Nathan Anderson, Myron Menk, Peter Abt, Andy Chow, Darlene Menk, Mike Nash, Linda Martens, Rick Miller, Egons Dunens, Update ON THE CONE Kevin Edwards, Hope Agard, Jason Ruen, Mark Hanson, Michele Ivey, Sandra Gutierrez, Adan Plata, Scott Nott and Pastor Beth. This group began conducting community interviews in January to obtain data to help Kinsmen better understand how communities have changed and will continue to change including the challenges they face. The first round of ten plus interviews has been completed. A second round of follow up community interviews are now being conducted. The reaction to the interviews is best expressed by PAR Leadership Team members. When asked to share one word that best conveyed their feeling about the interview they conducted, they responded: Reflective ~ Enthusiastic ~ Critical ~ Connecting ~ Fun Intriguing ~ Progressive ~ Enlightening ~ Inspirational Exciting ~ Surprised ~ Educational ~ Multi-faceted Committed ~ Flabbergasted ~ Challenging ~ Diverse Intriguing ~ Uncertain ~ Eye-opening ~ Awareness more to come next month barriers to inviting someone to follow Jesus, especially if our first step is to invite them to worship. I L Last month, Pastor Beth and Bob Boller introduced our focus on the area surrounding our congregation and the ongoing interviews of members of the community in order to learn more about where we might be more effective in making connections. As this group focuses on the circle, the area surrounding the Kinsmen campus, the Discipleship Team will focus on some of the areas where our members live or what we are calling the cone. Like many congregations, our membership is not found in the immediate vicinity of our campus. If you remember the Re:Mapping Our Hearts sermon series, the membership map showed clusters of members living in Jersey Village, Klein, Cypress, Tomball and places in between. As we think about connecting with people who feel far from God or far from a faith community, we recognize that the location of our campus may initially be one of many Therefore, we want to create a place for people to connect with our church before they come to our campus. We are at the very beginnings of recruiting leaders to lead a new type of group. These new mid-sized groups will have a larger membership than our small groups. These groups will be based in the neighborhoods where our members live and have a core of Kinsmen members. These groups will have a common cause or interest that shapes the direction of their outreach. These groups will be intentional in how they connect with people in their neighborhood or network who feel far from God or far from a faith community. These groups will be places for people to invited to belong before they believe or begin worshipping on our campus. If you would like to learn more about our vision for these new groups, contact Pastor Mark England mengland@kinsmenlutheran.org or Mark Hanson. 7

Did you know.when considering how you want your estate, whether small or large, distributed to heirs, you can establish a simple Charitable Remainder Trust right now. With a church or charity as the beneficiary for a portion of your estate, you can receive an income flow for the rest of your lifetime, a legacy for your heirs and the church, plus significant tax savings. 2. Did you know You can set-up a donation to the Kinsmen Endowment that will pay YOU an annual interest amount while you are living AND will someday be available to the Endowment Fund for use in future ministries. 3. Did you know A Charitable Gift Annuity between you and the Kinsmen Endowment Fund guarantees you a fixed annual income for life. For example, a $10,000 annuity at age 70 guarantees $510 (5.1%) each year. You will 18 receive a tax deduction, avoid immediately declaring capital gain, receive some tax-free income, and never worry about your income payments being reduced. 4. The ultimate purpose of a quilt is to provide warmth, an essential need for people in every climate, and LWR tries to ensure top standards in fabrics and filler accordingly. a sack for transporting those goods to market; a sunshade; a shawl; and most importantly a constant reminder that someone, far away, cares a lot. 22 Kinsmen Connection February 2016 Live well 2016 The Zika Virus is making the rounds on the news. I want to take this opportunity to share some information about Zika Virus. These imported cases could result in local spread of the virus in some areas of the United States. What are the symptoms of Zika? About 1 in 5 people infected with Zika will get sick. For people who get sick, the illness is usually mild. For this reason, many people might not realize they have been infected. What is Zika virus disease (Zika)? Zika is a disease caused by Zika virus that is spread to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week. People usually don t get sick enough to go to the hospital, and they very rarely die of Zika Is this a new virus? No. Outbreaks of Zika previously have been reported in tropical Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Zika virus likely will continue to spread to new areas. In May 2015, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an alert regarding the first confirmed Zika virus infection in Brazil. Since that time, local transmission has been reported in many other countries and territories. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, or conjunctivitis (red eyes). Symptoms typically begin 2 to 7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. How is Zika transmitted? Zika is primarily transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, the same mosquitoes that spread Chikungunya and dengue. These mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters and they can also bite at night. Mosquitoes become infected when they bite a person already infected with the virus. Infected mosquitoes can then spread the virus to other people through bites. It can also be transmitted from a pregnant mother to her fetus during pregnancy or around the time of birth. No local mosquito-borne Zika virus disease cases have been reported in US states, but there have been travelassociated cases. With the recent outbreaks, the number of Zika cases among travelers visiting or returning to the United States will likely increase. 22
23 February 2016 Kinsmen Connection What can people do to prevent becoming infected with Zika? There is no vaccine to prevent Zika. The best way to prevent diseases spread by mosquitoes is to protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites. Here s how: Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Sleep under a mosquito bed net if you are overseas or outside and are not able to protect yourself from mosquito bites. What is the treatment for Zika? There is no vaccine or specific medicine to treat Zika virus infections. Stay in places with air conditioning or that use window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside. Treat the symptoms: Get plenty of rest. Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents. All EPA-registered insect repellents are evaluated for safety and effectiveness. Always follow the product label instructions. Drink fluids to prevent dehydration. Take medicine such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) to reduce fever and pain. Reapply insect repellent as directed. Do not spray repellent on the skin under clothing. If you are also using sunscreen, apply sunscreen before applying insect repellent. If you have a baby or child: Do not use insect repellent on babies younger than 2 months of age. Dress your child in clothing that covers arms and legs, or Cover crib, stroller, and baby carrier with mosquito netting. Do not apply insect repellent onto a child s hands, eyes, mouth, and cut or irritated skin. Adults: Spray insect repellent onto your hands and then apply to a child s face. Treat clothing and gear with permethrin or buy permethrin-treated items. Treated clothing remains protective after multiple washings. See product information to learn how long the protection will last. *Information from ()/cdn0.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/ /zika_virus6.0.jpg If treating items yourself, follow the product instructions carefully. Take some time to live well! Do NOT use permethrin products directly on skin. They are intended to treat clothing. 23
