Recently it has come to my attention that there are questions and rumors about this report. Now is the time to get the facts rather than passing on information which is not accurate. Get the right information and the truth will set you free from rumors and false hearsay. Msgr. Guy A. Massie BOOK CLUB Our Book Club met on Monday, July 13th to discuss Leaving Time. Our new book is The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. Our next meeting to discuss this book will be held on Monday, August 24, 7:00 PM in the Parish House. You must read the book to participate in the discussion. As followers of Jesus, one of our primary tasks is to share the Good News with others. This is especially important for those of us who are parents, called at our child s baptism to share the light of faith with them. The Faith Formation Program here at SHSS is privileged to be part of this spiritual formation. If you have children currently enrolled in the program, or want them to begin this fall, we invite you to call the Religious Education Office, beginning Tuesday, August 18th to schedule an appointment to register. Open registration will take place on Sunday, September 13th after all the Masses. Our opening Parent Meeting will be held on September 20th, Catechetical Sunday, beginning at the 10:00 AM Mass and the meeting following in Cabrini Hall. May God bless our faith journey this year.
4 Dear Parish Family: Today is the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Today we begin a series of readings concerning the Eucharist. Due to the brevity of the Gospel according to St. Mark when we are in Cycle B of the Liturgical readings, we are given an additional reading from the Gospel according to Saint John. From today until the Twenty First Sunday, the Gospel reading will be coming from the sixth chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John. Food for the journey is the major theme of today s readings. In the first reading from the second Book of Kings, (from the Hebrew text) the Prophet Elisha tells his servant to give twenty barley loaves of bread, which Elisha had received as a gift, to the whole community. When his servant objects to his instruction due to the large amount of people in the community because there would not be enough bread for everyone, Elisha says that all will eat and there would be some left over. This first reading points us to the Gospel which tells us about the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. The Gospel and the first reading remind us of the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the center of our Catholic life. We believe that the Eucharist is truly, really and absolutely the real presence of Christ Jesus. We believe that in this sacrament, we most fully participate in redemptive work of Christ. By our reception of the Eucharist we enter most perfectly into the passion, death and resurrection of Christ. We believe that we are encountering the person of Christ Jesus in the Eucharist. The Eucharist, which is the real body and blood of Christ, makes us into the Body of Christ which is the community of Christ or the Church. So wonderful is this Blessed Sacrament that we reserve it in the tabernacle for communion for the sick and the dying and for prayer and meditation. This is the reason for the constantly burning sanctuary lamp at the altar. This burning candle alerts us to the presence of Christ in the Eucharist in the Tabernacle. The Eucharist is our food for the journey. It is the Body and Blood of Christ which is the food for the journey to God. The Eucharist is foor for our entire life. The Eucharist is our life here and now and especially at our death. It is the Eucharist which sustains us through death to new life. In fact, the sacrament of the dying is the Eucharist. The second reading from Ephesians urges us to live in the manner worthy of our vocation as disciples of Christ. The grace and the strength to live out our discipleship comes from the Eucharist. It is the presence of Christ in us which helps us in our striving to live as a follower of Christ. The life of a Disciple of Christ is all about Christ. To better prepare for Litugy, please read the Gospel of Saint John, Chapter 6. Msgr. Guy A. Massie
5 Page 5, Sunday, July 26,2015 REFLECTING ON GOD S WORD In many homes, meals begin with grace and end with putting away the leftover food. Those leftovers are either eaten later by someone who missed dinner or added to tomorrow s meals. The meal in today s Gospel is somewhat similar. Before the meal Jesus gave thanks. After all had eaten he asked that the leftovers be gathered so that nothing will be wasted. (John 6:11,12). It s not a stretch to see the similarity to our Liturgy of the Eucharist, which begins with a prayer of thanksgiving. It ends with the remaining Eucharist being reserved for those who couldn t be present and the crowd being sent to share Christ s sacrificial love. It s miraculous enough that all who are present can eat and have their fill. That is something to be truly grateful for. Yet, the miracle extends beyond the table. The hand of the Lord feeds us (cf. Psalm 145:16) with leftover love to spare. The abundant leftovers are meant not to be wasted, but to be shared with all those in need of Christ s love. LIVING GOD S WORD TODAY S READINGS Each of the miracles in today s scriptures begins with someone contributing what little they have to others. It s easy to belittle our paltry gifts and let them go to waste. Today s scriptures encourage us to offer what we have and watch in gratitude as the Lords turns it into something miraculous. FIRST READING: Elisha feeds a hundred people with twenty barley loaves (2Kings 4:42-44). PSALM: The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs (Psalm 145). SECOND READING: Paul urges the Ephesians to live in a manner worthy of the call they received (Ephesians 4:1-6). GOSPEL: Jesus feeds a large crowd with five barley loaves and two fish (John 6:1-15).
