Stewardship is determined by: 1.) Being properly registered and active for at least three months; 2.) Faithful participation at Sunday liturgies; 3.) Regular and identifiable support of the parish; 4.) Involvement in at least one parish ministry, program, activity or organization. These criteria are used to verify parishioner status for: sponsorship; parochial schools; participation in sacramental, educational, pastoral and social ministries, activities and enrichment programs; and use of facilities and services. PARISH SERVICES SVdP ~ The direct Helpline Number for St. Vincent de Paul Society is Baptism ~ The next parental prep session will be held at 6:30 pm, Wednesday, August 16th, in the Church Commons. After attending this session, Baptisms may be scheduled during a daily or weekend Mass (outside of Advent & Lent), as well as at 11am or 7pm on Saturday, or 1pm on Sunday. Please register for the session by contacting the parish office. Godparents and grandparents are also welcome. Avoid the need for a babysitter, attend while still pregnant! Marriage ~ Engaged couples should contact Deacon Jim Walter at deaconjim@sjbsummerville.org to set an appointment to begin the process of preparation at least six months prior to the date of marriage. Miraculous Medal Novena ~ Mondays at 9:45am. Rosary ~ in the Chapel at 9:45 on Friday. Anointing of the Sick and Pastoral Visitation ~ To arrange for a priest, deacon or lay minister to visit a loved one who is sick, homebound, or hospitalized, please contact the parish office. Because of HIPAA policies, a hospital cannot notify the church, so a family member must take the initiative. Anointing is also offered following Mass. An immediate response is not always possible, so don t wait until a crisis occurs! Cancer Support Group ~ Meets first Friday of each month at 9:30 am. Sessions are open to all. Contact Sister Carol. RCIA Inquiry ~ Next session will meet on Tuesday, August 10th, at 7:00pm in Madden Hall. Anyone who has questions about the Catholic Church is welcome to attend. Contact Sr. Carol. Children's Liturgy of the Word ~ celebrated during the 9:30 & 11:30 Mass each Sunday for youngsters in Kindergarten through Grade 4. 3 Bishop s Annual Appeal ext week s special collection will benefit the N Bishop s Annual Appeal. The Bishop s Annual Appeal (BAA) is a primary source of funding to help sustain and expand the ministries of the 96 parishes, 21 missions, 34 Catholic schools, and multiple agencies throughout the Diocese of Charleston. All 117 parishes and missions of the Diocese partake in the annual appeal. It is through this appeal that many of the programs supported by the Diocese can be offered in our communities today. Without the Bishop s Annual Appeal, thousands of families who rely on support from these programs would go without. As a steward of God s gifts, you are asked to support the needs of our Diocese through your Prayers and donation. We join our larger Catholic family throughout South Carolina to help fund many important ministries that are at the core mission of our church. Each year, the Bishop s Annual Appeal allows us to look outside our parish boundaries and support the universal causes of our church. In 2015 we raised over $4.1 million dollars to support our Diocesan-wide ministries. We hope to continue our success this year not only in dollars raised but by increased participation as well. We cooperate with God in our own redemption and in the redemption of others. We are also obliged to be stewards of the Church collaborators and cooperators in continuing the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, which is the Church's essential mission. This mission proclaiming and teaching, serving and sanctifying is our task. It is the personal responsibility of each one of us as stewards of the Church. All members of the Church have their own roles to play in carrying out its mission: Parents, who nurture their children in the light of faith; Parishioners, who work in concrete ways to make their parishes true communities of faith and vibrant sources of service to the larger community; All Catholics, who give generous support time, money, prayers, and personal service according to their circumstances to parish and diocesan programs and to the universal Church. People who want to live as Christian disciples and Christian stewards face serious obstacles. In the United States and other nations, a dominant secular culture often contradicts religious convictions about the meaning of life. This culture frequently encourages us to focus on ourselves and our pleasures. At times, we can find it far too easy to ignore spiritual realities and to deny religion a role in shaping human and social values. As Catholics who have entered into the mainstream of American society and experienced its advantages, many of us also have been adversely influenced by this secular culture. We know what it is to struggle against selfishness and greed, and we realize that it is harder for many today to accept the challenge of being a Christian steward. It is essential, therefore, that we make a special effort to understand the true meaning of stewardship and live accordingly. The Spirit shows us the way. Stewardship is a part of that journey. St. John Jamboree!! on the Parish Grounds Saturday, September 24th 11:00pm-3:00pm Food, games, and a live performance by YeeHaw Junction! Vendor applications are available on our website under the Jamboree logo or by contacting the parish office at or office@sjbsummerville.org. Vendor fee is $25. The fee will cover an approximately 10ft x 10 ft space for you to set up and display your products for sale. Vendors are responsible to bring a table and chairs, any displays, or other items (tent, generator, etc.) you wish to use. Sorry, no power is available from the facility for vendors. A space code will be provided upon payment. Set up will begin at 10AM on a first come first served basis. The festival will proceed Rain or Shine. Groups, Individuals, Craft Circles, Small Businesses, etc. are welcome to participate as vendors and sell hand made and unique items of interest to the general public. So, you think you have the tastiest chili? Put it to the test! Entries will be judged on taste, appearance and consistency in the following categories: Traditional (no beans) Specialty (vegetarian or game) Five Alarm (hottest) Best with Beans People s Choice Participants must supply a minimum of 6-qts of chili in a crockpot. Participants are also responsible for any serving instruments and any condiments needed for their chili. Tasting cups and spoons will be provided by the church. Don t forget, our Jamboree will feature free entertainment by the famous Bluegrass band : Yee Haw Junction We need you! We are looking for interested, passionate, organized people to be part of the Jamboree team. This is a huge event to put on each year, but many hands make light work. 5 Jubilee Year of Mercy ~ December 8 - November 20, 2016 We would like to thank Jessica Hobbs, Susan Gehring and all of their volunteers that made our Vacation Bible School a wonderful success. We had a phenomenal enrollment of 99 children, and we could not have done it without these wonderful volunteers! A special thanks to Publix for donating all of the food and snacks for our children and Volunteers! Youth Ministry Back to School Donation Drive Youth Ministry is collecting school supplies and toiletry items (such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, etc.) All items will be donated to a local elementary school. Thank you for your generosity! Catholic Young Adult Leadership Training: Go and Bring Christ to the World! 'Go and bring Christ to the world! A rephrasing of The Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20), was a lasting reminder and call to Swiss Guards as they retired from their posting under the papacy of Pope St. John Paul II. This mission, to bring the message of Jesus Christ to the world, has fueled and engulfed the hearts and minds of Christian disciples for over two-thousand years. In a world seeking to know the true love of Jesus Christ, the role and witness of the Disciple is greatly needed. As baptized and confirmed members of the Body of Christ, we are equipped with the graces needed to bring this message of peace, love, and mercy to humanity. Join young adult leaders from across the Diocese, August at the Diakonia Retreat Center in Salem, SC, as we re-equip ourselves to answer the Great Commission, and go into our homes, work places, parishes, and communities to go and bring Christ to the world. Scripture Reflection n the Parable of the Rich I Fool, Jesus said to the crowd, Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one s life does not consist of possessions. Most of the Parables shared by the Lord in Holy Scripture address the issue of possessions and how we treat them, how we use them as a measurement of success. Consistently those who write about the challenges we face in living lives of stewardship point to this same problem. Jesus certainly understood it. Christ was living in a society that was very different from that we experience today, but that basic difficulty existed then, as it does now. The problem is not that possessions exist, but that they can become the dominant motivation in our lives and how we live them. The Lord cautions us, as He does in the Parable of the Rich Fool from today s Gospel, that storing up treasure and possessions means that we may be wealthy in the eyes of society, but not in what matters to God. This is one of our ongoing stumbling blocks to being stewards living a Christian life. Our Holy Father Pope Francis speaks often about this same problem. In a recent homily he said, True joy does not come from things or from possessing. It is born from the relationship with others; it is born from feeling accepted, understood, and loved, and from accepting, understanding, and loving. It is saying to one another, You are important to me, not What you have is important to me. Possessions are nothing but an illusion.
