3 Catechetical oday, those who the T Community have designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. We would like to thank all of our Catechists for their service at St. John the Beloved. We are called to serve, are challenged to thrive and we are committed to be a place of discipleship, distinction and diversity. We continue to seek new ways to form and to be formed by our Catholic faith. As disciples living in, but not of the world, we acknowledge the challenge and reward of providing top quality opportunities to share the faith. The Scriptures and our Tradition are a treasure trove that we draw from in spreading the Good News of Jesus. Disciples are called to be a force for moral good in a world that often seems to rely on shifting values rather than on clear truths. The whole parish works together to create encounters with the risen Lord and to share the responsibility of passing on the Catholic faith to children and adults alike. ministry assists parents in their vocation by providing a safe place to hear the Good News and to learn how to live the message of Jesus. Our commitment to our children and to the whole parish continues - formation that is life-long and life-eternal. sessions are starting this week and we can hardly wait to have children of all ages filling the halls, eager to know and to love Jesus and His Church. There is a sense of newness, of God s wonderful grace, knowing that He gives us another new beginning. As we start this new season please pray for our bishop, priests, deacons, support staff, directors, catechists and all who work together to form us in faith. We are so grateful for the support of the whole parish in this ministry. We are proud of our multigenerational faith formation programs at St. John the Beloved. We welcome your ideas and insights as to how we might improve our current programs and new ones you d like to see offered. 4 Hurricane Relief This week, we are having a second collection to assist those affected by Hurricane Florence in North and South Carolina. Funds will be forwarded to Catholic Charities of South Carolina Disaster Services for distribution. While we mourn those who have lost their lives in this natural disaster, we must also join in prayer and action as a Catholic community. As we saw in 's reading from St. James, "If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, 'Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,' but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also, faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead." Let us show our faith by sharing what we can. If you are unprepared to help this week, but would like to, Disaster Recovery envelopes are available in the Commons, and can be dropped to the parish office or in next weekend s basket. Bishop s Annual Appeal Next week s special collection will benefit the Bishop's Annual Appeal (BAA). BAA is the primary source of funding for many critical ministries. We are impacting the lives of our brothers and sisters both spiritually and physically - but there is still much to do. We must continue to fund programs focused on charitable works, outreach, education and evangelization. Every gift to the BAA allows us to continue to fulfill the mission that has been entrusted to us.. We thank you for your continued generosity and support! Tour of the Church The Welcome Committee is offering a church tour on Wednesday, September 26th at 6:15 pm. Everyone is welcome, especially those new to the parish. Scripture Reflection his week s readings teach us T that living as Christian stewards requires us to swim against the tide of our me-first culture and stake out a path for our lives that may be different from that of our neighbors, friends or co-workers. Jesus illustrates in today s Gospel. Taking a child, He placed it in their midst, and putting His arms around it, He said to them, Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me. In this context, Christ is speaking not only of youngsters, but all little ones, those who are vulnerable or needy in any way through poverty, physical or mental illness, advanced age, difficult family situations the brothers and sisters St. Teresa of Calcutta would call Jesus in distressing disguise. They are all around us if we open our eyes. Like Jesus, we can put our arms around the little ones in our world and channel some of our energy, ambition and talent towards them. Giving the best of ourselves to these brothers and sisters may be a little messy at times. It may put us in situations that are far outside our comfort zones. Maybe our colleagues and neighbors will not understand our actions. But in reaching out to little ones in Jesus name, it is Jesus Himself we are touching. And that is a most privileged way of life. This week, ask the Lord for the wisdom to see the little ones in your neighborhood, community, or this parish and to show you concretely how you can reach out to them. Take at least one step. You will be stepping closer to Jesus Christ Himself. Who is the Greatest?
