3 An Easter Meditation THE SON A wealthy man and his son loved to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire the great works of art. When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war. He was very courageous and died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was notified and grieved deeply for his only son. About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands. He said, Sir, you don t know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and he died instantly. He often talked about you, and your love for art. The young man held out his package. I know this isn t much. I m not really a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this. The father opened the package. It was a portrait of his son, painted by the young man. He marveled at the way the soldier had captured the personality of his son in the painting. The father was so drawn to the eyes that his own eyes welled up with tears. He thanked the young man and offered to pay him for the picture. Oh, no sir, I could never repay what your son did for me. It s a gift. The father hung the portrait over his mantle. Every time visitors came to his home he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected. The man died a few months later. There was to be an auction of his paintings. Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having an opportunity to purchase one for their collection. On the platform sat the painting of the son. The auctioneer pounded his gavel. We will start the bidding with this picture of the son. Who will bid for this picture? There was silence. A voice in the back of the room shouted, We want to see the famous paintings. Skip this one. But the auctioneer persisted. Will someone bid for this painting? Who will start the bidding? $100, $200? Another voice shouted angrily. We didn t come to see this painting. We came to see the Van Goghs, the Rembrandts. Get on with the real bids! But the auctioneer continued, The son! The son! Who ll take the son? Finally, a voice came from the very back of the room. It was the longtime gardener of the man and his son. I ll give $10 for the painting. Being a poor man, it was all he could afford. We have $10, who will bid $20? Give it to him for $10. Let s see the masters, the people shouted. $10 is the bid, won t someone bid $20? The crowed was becoming angry. They didn t want the picture of the son. They wanted the more worthy investments for their collections. The auctioneer pounded the gavel. Going once, twice, SOLD for $10! A man sitting in the second row shouted, Now let s get on with the collection. The auctioneer laid down his gavel and said: I m sorry, the auction is over. What about the paintings? I am sorry. When I was called to conduct this auction, I was told of a secret stipulation in the will. I was not allowed to reveal that stipulation until this time. Only the painting of the son would be auctioned. Whoever bought that painting would inherit the entire estate, including all the paintings. The one who took the son gets everything! God gave His son 2,000 years ago to die on a cruel cross. Much like the auctioneer, His message today is: The son! The son! Who ll take the son? Because, you see, whoever takes the Son gets everything! Happy Easter!

4 D uring the course of Jesus' revelations to Sister Faustina on the He asked on numerous occasions that a feast day be dedicated to the and that this feast be celebrated on the Sunday after Easter. The liturgical texts of that day, the 2nd Sunday of Easter, concern the institution of the Sacrament of Penance, The Tribunal of the, and are thus uniquely suited to the request of Our Lord. This Feast, which had already been granted to the nation of Poland and been celebrated within Vatican City, was granted to the Universal Church by Pope John Paul II on the occasion of the canonization of Sr. Faustina on 30 April The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments stated that "throughout the world the Second Sunday of Easter will receive the name Divine Mercy Sunday, a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials that humanity will experience in the years to come." These papal acts represent the highest endorsement that the Church can give to a private revelation, proclaiming the certain sanctity of the mystic, and the granting of a universal feast, as requested by Our Lord to St. Faustina. Devotions will be held in our church next Sunday, April 23rd, at 3pm. O Lord, You who are everlasting mercy, give me a tender heart today towards those to whom the morning light brings less joy than it brings to me: those in whom the pulse of life grows weak; those who must lie in bed through all the sunny hours; the blind, who are shut off from the light of day; the overworked, who have no joy of leisure; the unemployed who have no joy of work; the bereaved, whose hearts and homes are desolate. Dear Lord, grant Your mercy on them all, now and forever. Amen. Today is a day of great joy I for us as Catholic Christians. The joy is reflected all around us in the way that people are dressed, in the way they approach Mass on this day. They key for us today is to carry that joy away from Mass to our celebrations and our lives. We hear about similar joy in today s Gospel from St. John. When Mary of Magdala goes to the tomb and discovers it empty, she does not walk leisurely back to tell the others. She runs, filled with excitement and with the same joy we must feel. Joy is contagious. That is what we need to spread when we go forth on this glorious day. Easter for us should be an encounter with the Risen Lord. We are to share the Good News. That is what Mary of Magdala does. Perhaps we have a difficult time talking about the joy we feel at Easter and at other times in the Church. We should not be hesitant; sharing the joy is part of being a disciple of Christ; it is what makes us an Easter people. All of the Gospels tell of the Resurrection of Christ. They may differ in some details, but they all agree that Christ is Risen. When His Apostles go forth to spread the Good News, they speak of His Resurrection, not the empty tomb. That is what we need to do, what we need to share the Easter joy of being a Catholic and a Christian! * Indicates a requirement for Safe Haven and/or Background Screening Easter Outreach Ministry Sunday, May 21st: Cook team 1: The Peterson s team, making Macaroni Casserole.
