1 God s People Worship Communion, January 6, 2019, 9:30 a.m. [* THOSE WHO ARE ABLE, PLEASE STAND] For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. - John 3:16 Pray and watch eagerly in the quietness of your heart during the prelude this morning as you prepare to worship God Almighty. Prelude Star of the East arr. Roger Wilson Welcome Announcements * Greet One Another Call to Worship * Prayer of Invocation and the Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. * Praise Songs His Name Is Wonderful Majesty Offering and Offertory The Three Kings Gordon Young * Doxology Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! * Prayer of Dedication Choral Anthem The Three Kings arr. Patrick Forbes [CHILDREN ARE DISMISSED TO DISCOVERY TIME] Scripture Readings Exodus 17:1-7 NIV Page 76 Matthew 16:13-20 NIV Page 1026 Sermon Get a Piece of the Rock Dr. Don Hoagland Pastoral Prayer * Affirmation of Faith - Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father by whom all things were made; who, for us, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory, to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. * Hymn of Preparation "Away in a Manger 24 Celebration of the Lord s Supper Communion of the People

5 Stewardship & Finance Year-End Update for Year End Annual Year End Actual Budget Actual Contributions 462, , ,377 Expenses 478, , ,153 Net Surplus/(Deficit) (15,152) 0 1,224 We thank you for listening and responding to our messages calling for your financial support. The fellowship and unity that our members and friends displayed in November and December were incredible. We look to carry over this experience to achieve more than ever for our members, friends, missions and community in We will provide additional details and discussion at the Annual Meeting on January 27th. Adult Education Join us today at 10:45 a.m. for one of our three new Adult Education classes, described below: Keep Calm and Be Encouraged (A Study of Second Corinthians) Led by Russ Hensel and Jay Eibner, Fellowship Hall Paul had a tumultuous relationship with the church at Corinth. After founding the church on his second journey, problems in the church caused him to write to them four times, visit at least once, and send at least one emissary there on another occasion. Two of the four letters have been lost, and the one we call Second Corinthians is actually the fourth and final one. By the time Paul wrote this letter, the problems had been resolved, and the letter reflects that reconciliation and the encouragement it brought to the apostle. It s a deeply personal letter and gives us insight into Paul as a person and pastor. In Second Corinthians, Paul summarized the efforts he had made in the cause of Christ and provides practical advice to the Corinthians on how to keep their faith strong. His message is as applicable to us today as it was to them 2000 years ago. He talks about how God's faithfulness and love give us hope and enable us to persevere in the face of adversity. He teaches that, for churches to be effective, they must confront and solve problems, not ignore them. The letter also addresses stewardship, and the need for sound doctrine. Join us as we delve into this letter each week this winter. The Life You ve Always Wanted Led by Chuck and Jan Wormington, Sue Dunswell, and Bob Flanagan, Parlor What does true spiritual life really look like? What keeps you from living such a life? How can you pursue it? John Ortberg invites you on a road to transformation and spiritual vigor that anyone can take. Cultivate new intimacy and confidence in prayer. Taste the benefits of slowing life s frenetic pace. Learn how to be guided by the Holy Spirit. As in a marathon, the secret lies not in trying harder, but in training consistently. Proven by followers of Jesus over the centuries, the spiritual disciplines are exercises that strengthen your endurance race on the road of growth. As you continue down that road, you ll see the signposts joy, peace, kindness, and all the hallmarks of a faith that s vital, real, and growing. Adult Confirmation Class Led by Pastor Don Hoagland, Crossroad Center In this class we will use scripture to examine aspects of faith such as the sacraments, the trinity and the church. You will be able to write your own Statement of Faith. If you have any questions about this class, speak with Dr. Hoagland.
