1 The Supplement January 2019 From the Pastor Our Relationship With God How would you describe your relationship with God? If someone asked you about the connection you currently have with the Lord, what would they say? Would they use words like searching, content, solid, periodic, energizing, bland or contagious? Recently I have been doing some reading in a book entitled The Ransomed Heart by John Eldredge that prompted me to think about this all important issue of our relationship with the Almighty. As Eldredge points out, the scriptures use a number of metaphors to speak about the condition of our relationship with God, and particularly as we know God in Jesus Christ. Some of those metaphors or depictions are very elementary, while others are very endearing. When scripture speaks of the potter and the clay we often envision ourselves as the lump that God works with or that fragment that God s love is trying to make whole. Jesus also speaks of the shepherd and the sheep, which emphasizes our need as sheep for direction, guidance and protection from the great shepherd, Jesus. Does that characterize your relationship with God? Do you see Jesus as your source of comfort and direction? The metaphor of the father and child used in scripture helps us to know that we are indeed privileged people, that God sees us as his own children, and that we are dearly welcomed. Is that how you see God? Do you approach your Heavenly Father with the wonder and enthusiasm of a child? Do you relish the unconditional love of God for you? And then Jesus refers to us as friends. We are not simply thought of as sheep or a lump of clay but as friends of Jesus. To be a friend of Jesus is to be welcomed into a relationship that is trustworthy and everlasting. Jesus is the kind of friend who would, and did make the ultimate sacrifice for his friends, that s us. During this Season of Epiphany please give prayerful consideration to your relationship with God. Think about those metaphors and others, and brood on what lengths God went to include you in His Kingdom. 2 Annual Meeting The Annual Congregational Meeting of Supplee Memorial Presbyterian Church The meeting will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2019, immediately following the 9:30 a.m. Worship Service. The purpose of the meeting is to review the reports of all church committees and organizations, approve the Pastor's Terms of Call, and to transact all such business as may properly come before the meeting. In addition there will be a meeting of Supplee Memorial Presbyterian Church as a corporate body. The purpose of that meeting is to review the budget for 2019, receive the Treasurer's Report and to transact all such business that may properly come before the meeting. January 5 & 6 Get a Piece of the Rock Exodus 17:1-7 & Matthew 16:13-20 January 13 The Harvest Is Plenteous Matthew 4:18-22 & Matthew 9:35-37 January 20 The Antidote for Life s Ills Deuteronomy 11:18-32, John 5:44-47 & Jonah 1:1-3 January 27 A Post Christmas Prescription John 15:1-11 MISSION of the Month Jon and Cindi Hampshire H Translation Way, Orlando, FL jon-cindi_hampshire@sil.org Organization: Wycliffe Bible Translators, PO Box Orlando, FL Cindi and Jon have served with Wycliffe Bible Translators for 30 years. They served overseas for 17 of those 30 years. Since 1917, Wycliffe has been translating the Bible into hundreds of native languages around the world. Wycliffe brings the Word of God to people who otherwise would literally have no opportunity to hear it. The diversity of language is in great trouble, today. One spoken language disappears forever every 14 days. By the year, 2,100, appropriately 7,000 more languages will be lost. For the past 10 years they have lived and served at Wycliffe s USA headquarters in Orlando, FL. But God is moving them back to Africa in a few months. Jon will move back into the branch director role. Cindi will work in the office in various roles including assisting Jon, and leading the prayer department. The Hampshires ask for prayers for Africa. Now that they have the opportunity to hear God's Word, the prayer is that they will receive it in their hearts. Thank you so much for your partnership with them in this important ministry of Bible translation! Fellowship News Church members and friends of all ages are invited to eat and play together at the annual Soup & Bingo night on January 26 at 6:00. Warm up with some delicious homemade soups and get your belly laugh on with some friendly bingo games. We are looking for 8-10 people to share their talents at a Family Craft Day on March 2. You might teach us how to make jewelry, greeting cards, art, slime, hair braids or sponsor a service project like making prayer blankets or neck pillows. Consider this opportunity for enriching relationships and creating new ones. Event will run from 9: Sign up in the narthex or contact Faye Kolos or Jenn McKnight Please mark your calendar for the following events: Telestration Family Game Night on March 23 Dutch Apple Theater on April 6

3 Adult Education New Class this January Three all new adult education classes will be starting on January 6. Look for details in the bulletin. Choose a class and join us for this fun and educational time! Women s Association News The Women's association met briefly in December before enjoying our annual Christmas luncheon at The Old York Road Country Club. Thanks to Jane Storck for the trivia and games, we enjoyed while we were there. The Christmas Bazaar was a great success and we appreciate everyone who donated, baked, setup, worked, and cleaned up after. Without your help, the Bazaar would not be possible. This February, all the women of Supplee and their sisters, mother, neighbors and friends are invited to join us for our Annual Valentines Day brunch. The brunch is held in fellowship hall on February 9th at 10 am. There will be good food, fellowship and entertainment. Please plan to join us. There will be a sigh up in the narthex soon and if you are able, please sign up to bring a casserole dish or some coffee cake or muffins. Notes From Supplee Youth Group by Evan Lehman For quite some time now, the youth group has been using the God s Word for You book series as our Sunday School curriculum. Their books take you on a slow, detailed walk through individual books of the bible. As a teacher, I have been impressed with what the group is able to gain from slowly moving through the scriptures. So far we have completed Titus and Romans. By the time this issue of the Supplement is released, we will have one remaining lesson in the book of James. The series is still in the process of being written, so they do not have a guide for every book of the bible yet. Once have completed James, our Sunday school will vote on which book we want to dive into next. After having read and studied with God s Word For You, I would highly recommend these studies to anyone. Compared to other series that I have used with the students, as well as in my personal life, I find the God s Word For You series to be very helpful and unique. They follow a 3 part approach called Read, Feed, and Lead. The Read portion is meant to be a guide to help you understand the bible as your read it. The Feed section is designed to work as a personal daily devotional. Lastly, the Lead section gives you enough material that if you wanted, you would be able to lead a study on the particular portion of scripture. Their three part approach make them amazing books as they can be used by Christians in leadership as well any believer during their daily devotional. I hope that you keep these books in mind the next time you are looking for a new personal devotional book. Upcoming SYG Events: 1/6 Fellowship Meal and Youth Group 5:30 8:00pm 1/13 Youth Group 6:00 8:00pm 1/18-1/20 Winter Retreat with FPCA 1/27 Youth Group 6:00 8:00pm Women s Retreat On January 18-20, 2019 we will return to Ocean City, New Jersey for our annual Women s Retreat (January 18-20, 2019). Mark the date on your calendar now so you won t miss a great time of spiritual refreshment, fun and good food. All women of Supplee and their friends are invited! The cost will be $60 per person. 4 2019 Offering Envelopes Now Available Please pick up your 2019 offering envelope boxes from the table in the hallway outside of the Parlor. This saves us from having to mail them. Thanks! Also, if you do not have envelopes there but would like to receive some, just let the office know at Sanctuary Flowers The Deacons thank all who have provided flowers for our chancel and communion table throughout the year. Your contributions toward this fund allow us to bring color and sunshine into the lives of our sick and shut-in church members, as well as beauty to the sanctuary for our worship services. The 2019 Chart is now available through September It is on the bulletin board on the left in the hallway leading out of the narthex. If you would like to donate flowers, please sign next to the date, choosing chancel (listed first) or communion table. There will be only chancel flowers on communion Sundays (the first Sunday of the month). At the same time, please pick up a flower envelope (at the bottom of the chart) and fill it out. When doing so, be sure to check whether or not you will take the flowers and also include your dedication information. The cost of chancel flowers is $40; a communion table arrangement is $20. Please make your check payable to "Supplee Presbyterian Church." Scrapbooking Day If you like to scrapbook, or want to learn, come to the church Fellowship Hall for a day of scrapbooking. Date: Saturday, February 23 Time: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or come when you can during that time and leave when you want Bring: Your lunch (beverages will be supplied) Cost: Free If you are new to scrapbooking, there are people that will help you get started. All you need are your pictures, an album to put them in, adhesive or other replaceable items. Trimmers, scissors, a Cricut machine and cartridges and non-replaceable products will be available for use. The day is open to all church family and friends. Contact Doris Beck for more information or reservations at or DLB1716@verizon.net (please put scrapbooking in the subject line). News From Supplee Nursery School by Karen Kohler, Director I realize this article should be all about January, but it s being written in mid-december, and the children are just exploding with anticipation. I wish you could be here to see their glowing eyes, hear their voices as they practice their Christmas songs and smell the cinnamon ornaments and gingerbread cookies.it was also so nice of Pastor Don Hoagland and Evan Lehman to come to the classes to talk and read about Christmas. Wouldn t it be wonderful to go back, be 3 or 4 years old again, and feel the magic! Being here in the Nursery School, we are lucky enough to be part of it all. But now, January! We have great things planned Mrs. Dunswell and her whales, Ice Painting, Sensory Fun, baking blueberry muffins on blue day, eating oranges on orange day, H is for hibernation we ll learn about our 5 senses, make instruments, and of course, celebrate winter in all her frosty glory! The end of the month brings Conferences, where we will share with one another the growth and development we have seen this year, discuss what will follow and recognize the uniqueness of each of the children. We continue registration for Demand for our full-day Pre-K was so strong we needed to add another class. But we have an equal number of parents who prefer the half-day Pre-K schedule for this last year before Kindergarten. And our 2-3 s and 3-4 s are filling quickly, too! If you or someone you know would like to take a tour of our program, please have them call , or go online to our Facebook page, website, or us at nurseryschool@suppleepc.org. Happy, healthy 2019! We hope your new year is filled with blessings and all good things!

Please send a card, sign your name, and Supplee Church. This is a wonderful way to remind them that God cares and so do we.
