1 SHILOH BAPTIST CHURCH NEW SITE SIS. ANGELA B. COLEMAN, EDITOR, PUBLISHER Inside this Edition Thanksgiving Message Community Recognition. 3 Jr. Missionary ALZ Walk Message from Pastor Parrish Foundational to the Christian experience is the act of thanksgiving. Our level of thanksgiving often defines who we are and what we are called to express daily in tangible ways. Couple that with the Thanksgiving holiday and, Pink Ribbon Sunday. 9 Missionary Ministry Clergy Appreciation Sunday Usher Ministry Fall Revival 14 Prayer Ministry 15 Young Adult Ministry November Birthdays..18 Save The Date From the Library 20 potentially, you have a powerful worship experience that blends the best of the Christian faith. Thanksgiving, though not a distinctly Christian holiday, at least in America, is still important. Throughout these United States, churches and families gather to express their appreciation to God for all that God has done. It is one of the moments of the year where worship is both easier for, and expected by, all who attend church services. The premise being, of course, that all of us have something for which we can be thankful. 1

2 Within the African American faith community, Thanksgiving is both a holiday and an ongoing act that speaks of our passion and love for God who has, throughout our struggle in this country, brought us a mighty long way. Thanksgiving allows us to gather as family and celebrate the many marvelous acts of God. As the Christian church gathers to celebrate Thanksgiving, it is a great time to reflect upon the suffering and challenges that have arisen throughout the year and how God has, through Jesus Christ, enabled us not only to endure but also to grow. I believe that Churches of Color and many of our families place great value on Thanksgiving Day because this holiday calls us together to remember and celebrate the blessings of God s grace evident despite all our conditions. Though we may have had great challenges throughout the year, God has been faithful. Testimonies of God s faithfulness come through as we gather each year. This celebration should, perhaps more than any other, place emphasis on the God who continues to be faithful despite the challenges of our lives. Our time of worship should reflect the depth of our appreciation to God and should be designed to point to God and all that God continues to do for us through Jesus the Christ. We gather both at the House of Worship and in our homes to offer thanksgiving in ways that are meaningful. When we think of the goodness of the Lord and all He has done for us, for this and so much more we are thankful, mighty thankful. Be Blessed this Thanksgiving season. Pastor 2

9 Pink Ribbon Sunday The Women s Ministry of Shiloh Baptist Church organized the Pink Ribbon Sunday Event to help bring awareness to Mammograms. The event was held on Sunday, October 14, The members of the church were asked to wear pink in recognition of this event. The Women s Ministry distributed pamphlets, pens, and pink ribbons to the congregation. Sister Fernanda Kain also gave a brief message to the congregation about the importance of early detection and how mammograms save lives. Early detection is key to survival so let s make sure you complete your self-examinations every month and get regular mammography screenings. One suggested means of remembering to do this, is to use your birthday as the date to get it done each year. Life is precious and definitely worth saving! So, get yourself checked out. 15 Prayer, (Our first, not last decision) ~ Deacon Jeri Swann, Christian Education Ministry~ Today, we live in a world of uncertainties which can cause many to lose hope, doubt, and be in despair. Many are unsure about our present, past and future. Some are even unsure about this very day. We make hasty and unwise choices and decisions trying to solve life problems on our own. We look to man for help in solving our daily problems; the government, president, politicians, local and world leaders. We invest in stocks, bonds, and other money markets, only to find that the rates change from hour to hour and day to day. Rates can be up increasing our investments or down, dropping or even eliminating them completely. Despite of our uncertainties, one thing stands out and will never fail: PRAYER. The Bible instructs us to pray without ceasing. The Bible is our foundation for our convictions about prayer. When we believe and practice what it says, we can be confident that the Lord will hear and answer our prayers. Prayer is the most power weapon on earth and the best way to fight our battles is on our knees. Many scriptures in the Bible contain God s promises concerning prayer. A few of my favorites are: 1 John 5:14-15 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him. Mathew 7:7-8 Ask and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be open to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Matthew 21:22 And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive. John 1:5-7 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. Thus, our first step always is prayer. When you pray, ask in Jesus name and ask with a pure heart, believing and expecting that the Lord will send an answer to your request. Before we can receive an answer to our prayer, we must first place our faith in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins. God is holy. Our sins have separated us from Him. When we repent and believe that Christ died on the cross to pay our sin debt in full, we receive Salvation. We enter a relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. Then, we can converse with Him and be certain that He hears us. Jesus came to open the door for us to have a relationship with our heavenly Father and have access to Him through prayer. He promises to answer the prayers of those who have been forgiven and reconciled to the Lord. Once we have entered a relationship with the Father through Jesus Christ, we can confidently expect answers to our prayers. So, PRAY and watch God work it out for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. 15

16 Shiloh Baptist Church (New Site) Young Adult Ministry A Fresh Start & New Beginnings For a while now, it s been a known and widely felt sentiment that Shiloh could certainly use some new faces in the young 20 something department. And if you ve been hearing all the excited responses we re getting you probably know by now that the Young Adult Ministry is aiming to bring just that. So, what is the Young Adult Ministry? The backstory - In September 2016 Ministers Devin and Jonique Waiters began discussing the idea of having a ministry to serve our not high school but not quite 30 either crowd. At the time, our college students had a place to call their own in the Transitions Sunday School class which was taught by Deacon Kevin Barnes. After discussing the idea with Deacon Barnes, the three of them began working together to provide something to draw in more college aged men and women for Bible study and fellowship. Shortly after that, with God s grace and an approval from Pastor, the three of them began co-facilitating Bible study and Sunday School discussions. This increased engagement led to a fellowship night with the college students. Fast forward to the summer of 2018, and the three agreed to present the need of a full-fledged ministry to Pastor Parrish. On September 1st, 2018 they presented the ministry proposal to Pastor Parrish, and the Young Adult Ministry was officially born! So, who are these young adults? Well, they are the adult members (and soon to be members) of the congregation between the ages of 18 and 30. Yep, Sorry 31-year olds! You were born too soon. All jokes aside, Ministers Devin and Jonique along with Deacon Barnes have very carefully and thoughtfully considered how best to set up a ministry such as this for New Site, and who it would specifically serve. That said, we should probably add some context here. Just so we re clear (Not because anyone has said this. Wink wink.), the ministry is for young adults. If we can speak for the young adults for a moment, Contrary to popular belief, we are NOT youth, not youth adults, or mama s baby all grown up (even though we might come home for Mama s cookin ). The young adults are also not merely college students. Most of them will be year old s who may also include working graduates, engaged or married couples, and young parents. Our message to the young adults. Because we know that young adults are keen on knowing that the ministry is truly for them, (speaking to you now young adults) we want to assure you we have taken into account that all of you are not the same. Because we understand each may have different spiritual and social needs depending on where you are in life, we (the ministry leaders) are working diligently to create an atmosphere and culture where we can grow together but still respect that sometimes college students, college graduates, parents, and married couples respectfully need and want to study and fellowship within their own exclusive secret societies without contaminating the sanctity of their association (all in the love of Christ of course LOL). 16

17 Final message The ministry is excited about getting started, and we know it s going to take a lot of help and support from EVERYONE to make this ministry a success. Just like it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a community of Christian brothers and sisters working together with God to grow a ministry. As we grow together in the Spirit and love of Christ please don t hesitate to reach out to us if you believe God has placed the desire in your heart to help us in some way! Love you and God bless, Ministers Devin Waiters and Jonique Waiters Director and Assistant Director, Young Adult Ministry Shiloh Baptist Church (New Site) 17
