2 Sis Barbara Bowie By Sis Tonya D. Hayes Sister Barbara Bowie was diagnosed with breast cancer in March of When the cancer was initially detected by the doctors they described the cancer as being in the aggressive stage and they also discovered it was the size of a green pea. The cancer was hidden between the breast on left side bone wall. When she first received the news, she was shocked and devastated because she knew there was not a history of breast cancer in her family. Her first surgery was one month later in April of Sister Bowie had 4 treatments of chemotherapy and 35 treatments of radiation. Sister Bowie s #1 support network was God, The Good Lord. She was determined to live and not die. Sister Barbara Bowie breast cancer has been in remission for 15 years. Sister Bowie would like to share some advice to all women. Early detection is the best protection. Pray, always keep in touch with God. Ask the Lord to guide your path. Read your bible regularly. Listen to your doctors, get a second doctors opinion, and make sure you are comfortable with the team of doctors prescribing your treatment plan. Get regular mammograms. Do daily body self-check exams. Have annual physicals. Practice healthy eating, and exercise regularly. Sister Shontrice Patillo Shontrice s breast cancer was detected after experiencing pain for and insisting that physicians complete further tests to discover the root cause of her pain. It took medical professionals three months to diagnose her with breast cancer. Mrs. Patillo had eight surgeries over 15 months, three months of chemotherapy and a year of hormone treatments. Shontrice purposefully shared her story on Facebook and openly with her family, All too often as African Americans we shy away from being open with our families about our medical diagnosis, shares Patillo. She struggled with tracking her family s medical history and wanted to set the tone for sharing lifesaving information with those she loves most. Shontrice s message to all women is simple, Know your body and never give up advocating for your health and wellness. Cancer is non-discriminatory and can affect anyone. Early detection is key and provides you with options. The later you wait, the fewer options you have, continues Patillo. Shontrice also has a message for women who are coping with a breast cancer diagnosis, I encourage women not to fall into depression; what helped me most was my red lipstick, keeping the faith and surrounding myself with positive and upbeat people.

3 Poem By Sister Ruth Ricks Pink and purple everywhere, and some will have a twist. Cancer scare can attack anyone at any time and age. Medical cures have offered hope so be proactive and aware. Be careful about what you eat and change it if you must. Get check ups on a regular, to look out for your health. God willing with every new birthday we grow up and we change. Choose to be a miracle and make an appointment today. Just don t ignore them, they tell us something's amiss. It never seems to matter the gender nor life at any stage. Not because its just for you, but for those whom you love and care. Make and keep you appointments, find a doctor you can trust. Encourage your friends and family so they too can have the wealth. Awareness brings strength to know, to ignore will brings us pain. The sooner you get ahead of the game the better your chances to stay. AMEN VLC Family, Do you want to lower your taxes this year? 5 Pioneer of the Month Pioneer Marlene Ross was born October 20, She was born in Winola County, Texas. Her parents are Isaac and Etheline Ross. She has four sisters and two brothers. Mother Ross is the oldest girl. She started attending Christ Temple in Her former husband of ten years Elmer Curtis Clay, brought her to the church to worship at Christ Temple (now Victorious Life Church). The best decision she has made in her life was being baptized in the name of Jesus and knew she was filled with the Holy Ghost. Pioneer Ross has five adult children; one son and four daughters. Her children were raised in the church and one of her daughters was baptized in Jesus name. She is blessed with eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Some of the ministries she participated in have been the Gospel Choir under the direction of Sis. Vincent, an assistant to the pastor and guest ministers from the Nurse s Guild and Person to Person ministry. She also worked with the pastor s wife ministry in Texas with Bishop Frazier. Her message to young people is to listen and obey your parents, seek the Lord as early as you have Mama use to say Perhaps, you need to be less concerned about what s on your head and more concerned about what s in your head. Mama and Daddy were both second generation college graduates, and knew, personally, the sacrifice required to finish a worthwhile goal. They taught their six crumb snatchers by example. Cleaned, clothed and hair combed, they sent us off to grade school, high school and college, to obtain as much education as they could equitably afford. Clearly, Diva was not a major they were willing to support. God reminds us in Proverbs 1:7, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. A sound mind is a worthwhile goal, and akin to spiritual health. Diplomas, degrees and other certifications qualify us to make a living, but the study of God s Word equips us to make a life.
