Zion: Pastor s Day of Reflection Retiring Pastor Served 56 Years All Fellowship Journal churches and subscribers are invited to celebrate Pastor Noily Paul, Jr. on Sunday, November 16 at 9:45 a.m. The officers and members are planning a Day of Reflection in recognition of his 37 years of faithful service. The colors are shades of green. Also, the church s calendar of events begins with the Sr. Deaconess birthday program on November 2, the Youth Choir s pre-thanksgiving program on November 9, the Lord s Supper celebration on November 23, and the Brotherhood s Praise & Worship service on November 30. These services commence at 9:45 a.m. Plan to start your Thanksgiving morning with the Mt. Zion family on November 27. Service begins at 9 a.m. All of the above services are held at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 701 Huey P. Long Avenue, Gretna, LA. The First New Testament Missionary & Educational Baptist Church family is announcing the retirement of its pastor, Rev. Edmond Walker, Sr. Pastor Walker will soon become pastor emeritus. His position of active pastor will end with a retirement celebration planned for Friday, October 31, Rev. Walker first served under the leadership of Rev. Gumm, former pastor of First New Testament, until his retirement at which time Rev. Walker became the new pastor. Leadership and Social Media By James Emery White There is a lot of advice out there for the use of social media that usually falls into two categories: 1) don t put anything dumb out there for the world to see, and 2) leverage it as much as you can to your advantage. But if you are part of a church s leadership team, whether staff or volunteer, there s more to add to the mix that isn t being talked about very much. For example: (Cont d on Pg. 12)

6 Page 6 Breast Cancer Awareness Month October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. A lot of progress has been made, but there is still a long way to go. Create an early detection plan and invite others to do the same. Share Beyond The Shock, the national breast cancer organization s educational resource, with friends and family. Host a fundraiser to help provide mammograms for women in need.

Leadership & Social Media cont d from Pg Don t post anything that could potentially undermine your reputation or the church s reputation for Christ-like character. But it s stunning how many people feel there is a disconnect between what they post, what people will see, and who they say they are. The point is that when you post something, you are putting it out for public consumption. 2. Don t post anything that would potentially undermine the maturity and gravitas accompanying your leadership role. If you are a leader, people WILL Google you, search you, find you on Twitter and Facebook and then make an evaluation. Does your online presence support your leadership role, or undermine it? Does it breed confidence in you as a teacher, as someone who is wise and mature? Simply put: make sure your social media presence supports your position in the church. 3. Don t overdo it. There are some people who seem to live on Facebook and Twitter or for it. This is problematic on two fronts: first, for the average busy person it sends the message that you have a lot of time on your hands. Translation: you re not working very hard. That undermines your leadership. The final concern is that if you overdo it, you will lose people s attention. People who tweet every 10 minutes fail to realize that their followers aren t reading them every ten minutes. Nor do they want to.
