MSP What is an MSP? It is what is filled out by a congregation as they look for a new pastor. MSP stands for Ministry Site Profile. This MSP tells about the congregation. It tells about them and what they are looking for. Inevitably it tells about the changes they want to see through new leadership. As we approach another annual meeting and a new budget, it is time to review again what the congregation of First Lutheran said in their MSP, when I was called by God to serve in this congregation. This was compiled through surveys and conversations with the members of First Lutheran, through prayer and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Goals: FLC does not have a strategic plan in place at this time. We look forward to direction from our new Pastor. Based on survey results from our congregation, we have defined our top four goals: 1) To rebuild our congregation 2) To attract more young families 3) To create harmony within the church 4) To keep our youth as active members after the completion of confirmation. Energy: We are very passionate about finding a new shepherd that will provide us long term stability and harmony. Goals: Nothing in the MSP said this congregation wants to stay the same as it was. 1) To rebuild means to change. 2) To attract more young families means to change. 3) To create harmony, meaning there is NOT harmony, means to change. 4) To keep our youth as active members, which means they are not, after the completion of confirmation, means to change. Energy: Through Biblical Word study, this is what I found. In the Greek, to be passionate is to burn; fire; desire. To be very passionate is to be a burning fire of desire. The Holy Spirit is the burning fire that does not consume. The energy listed by the congregation was to have that burning fire of desire that only the Holy Spirit can bring. That coupled with finding a new pastor (shepherd), leads to a pastor called by God, through the burning fire of desire found in the congregation for change. What is a shepherd? In Hebrew, a shepherd is one that feeds; to drive out to pasture; who uses a stick; rod; strong; powerful; mighty; valiant. In Greek it is simply used as shepherd or chief shepherd. Thus, referring back to the Hebrew defined roles of a shepherd. The desire was to find a shepherd that will provide for long term stability. Stability is something that is built. Long term stability can only be built upon change over a long period of time and change. This is nothing that comes quickly nor is it something that can be evaluated in a short-term. Harmony in Hebrew is advice, God s plan. In the Greek it is used as agreement; think; set one s mind on. All of which relate to God, in God s 3

plan for us to be in agreement, to set mind on, which can only be God. When we set our mind on God and God s plan, then all the things of humans really do not matter. The six marks of discipleship all require continual change towards being the disciples (followers) of Christ. 1) Daily Prayer 2) Weekly Worship 3) Bible Reading 4) Service 5) Spiritual Friendships 6) Giving Change is always difficult. First of all, change will never leave a place looking like it is nor like it was. Here are some things to think about when it comes to change. When I did a word study on change in the NIV Bible, here is what I found for the Greek use of the word change in various forms. Transfer; change; be taken up. Change; removal Change one s mind Reconcile Turn Around Repentance God changed God s mind towards Job. God changed God s mind towards the people of Nineveh because of the people changing, see the story of Jonah. There are 68 verses in the NIV Bible that mention change. Change has been happening for a very long time and thank God for that one! Here are some quotes about change and holding onto the past. Jesus said, Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Holding on is believing that there is only a past; letting go is knowing that there s a future. Daphne Rose Kingma If you don t leave the past in the past, it will destroy your future. Look what s in front of you, not what yesterday took away. The best is yet to come. George Strait One reason people resist change is because they focus on what they have to give up, instead of what they have to gain. Unknown author. Good thing that Jesus didn t resist change! Remember when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received, only what you have given: A heart enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice and courage. St. Francis of Assisi God calls us into change, changing our hearts and minds, loving one another in Christ, so we can reach out in ministry to all, through the diversity that God provides. May you find the peace that surpasses all understanding, while we change how God calls us to be, not how we were or are, but to be. 7 ELCA Giving We ve distributed $2.6 million to 254 seminary students through full- and partial-tuition scholarships given through synodical, congregational, mission developer/redeveloper and federal chaplaincy scholarships. Together, we marked the first year at International Leader program class that included more than 50 percent female scholarship recipients, with the help of the International Women Leaders initiative. Thanks to generous giving at the ELCA Youth Gathering and beyond, we raised more than $1 million to support the work of ELCA World Hunger through the Global Farm Challenge, our youth-driven fundraising challenge to support the agriculture-related programs of ELCA World Hunger. This year, Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) was allocated $7.3 million from the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster to help fund disaster case-management for survivors of Hurricane Harvey. This, coupled with the $15 million given for hurricane response by LDR supporters, means our church can continue to accompany survivors of last year s hurricanes until all needs have been met. The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton Presiding Bishop, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America One Service We will have one service on December 2 (Sunday School Program) and December 9 (Cantata) at 9:30 a.m. Social Ministry The Social Ministry committee collects Pantry items each month to be donated to the needs of our community. The Pantry items collected for December will be food items for Cardinal Food Baskets. Please leave your donations in the 7 shopping cart in the entryway. Advent Services Join us on Wednesday evenings for something exciting and new! All of this will be starting on November 28 until December 19. Please, come and enjoy music, carols and plays. Each Wednesday we will touch on topics of Hope, Faith, Joy and Peace. Join us in the celebration of these amazing gifts on Wednesday nights during Advent at 7:00 p.m. Supper will be served at 6:00 p.m. From the President I want to take time and tell everyone about our new vision and mission statements that are everywhere. Our council went on our retreat in late September to become a closer knit group. We also discussed ideas of how to make our church better for everyone. We felt the need to change our mission statement to better reflect where the council and the congregation are going in the next 5 years. We felt that since our church is going through change God was telling us we needed to go forward with this new message of bringing people together. We came up with the new mission statement of Loving others in Christ for outreach to all; while providing for God s diversity. To us as your council team we felt this embodies all of the missions we set forth here at First Lutheran. We want to reach all the people we can to spread the good word. The second part of that is God s diversity because God s world we live in is diverse. God has given us in this world the enlightenment of knowing different people from different backgrounds that we all can get along and share each other s diversity with each other. When I think of this, it gives me goosebumps because when we love others in Christ we help everyone that is in our church, our community, and the world. That is a wonderful thing. Jesus talks about helping the poor, the needy, and the less fortunate. But what he is saying really is take care of your fellow man, woman, and child. Here at First Lutheran we do that now,

but we have more opportunities to come where we can give back to the church, the community, and the world. Your council and I really look forward to doing that with our future and the mission statement ties into that. The vision statement that we have coincides with our mission statement. The vision statement says Building upon the properties that God provides. To reach out in mission to the community. The vision statement to the council means we are going to use all of our necessary properties to accomplish our mission statement. Properties being the church and the land around. I don t want to call people the property of the church, but we are the vessel in which we carry the mission out to the community. Just think if we had the opportunity to do something with our property that could affect the entire area. Where people come to get the help they need and help they want. I think we at First Lutheran want to help as many people as we can. I think we all want to help our community the best we can. And I think we are all caring and loving people who want to help spread the good word and help everyone around us when we can. We are truly amazing people here at First Lutheran. I see it every Sunday at both services and Sunday school and at fellowship gatherings. We are a big family. With all of our land and property I see us doing something big to help the community. I see us in the future expanding our reach into this community that affects every single member of it and every new member to the community. I think God has put us on Dakota Avenue for a reason. I don t know yet what that reason is, but I have a feeling he has big plans in store for us. I have a feeling that with our vision and mission statements together and the work going on, is the people of First Lutheran not only can make ourselves and our church better, but we can make this entire community better. That is going to be amazing to do. Thank you for being a part of the family of First Lutheran, every one of you. Thank you for seeing the vision that we can do and that God is calling us to do. I hope we all can enjoy the ride the vision and the mission God is calling upon us to do with everyone. One last thing: thank you for letting me be your president for the past year. I hope I have talked or reached out to everyone in the church. I hope we can move forward together and be the best people that I have seen us be for the last year. I hope we can continue to grow not only with people in the church but grow our ministries outside the church. It truly has been a blessing for me to be president and to lead our congregation to a new level of ministry and devotion to God. I have laughed with a lot of you this last year and we have done some amazing things. I have seen how hard everyone puts work into our church. I can t thank everyone of you individually, but I will try. I want to give everyone a really BIG THANK YOU. Chad Cain President of First Lutheran Lutheran World Relief A special thanks to Randy Rahn and Wilbur Larson, who delivered the quilts and kits for Lutheran World Relief to St. John Lutheran Church in Norfolk on November 5. Thanks to Sandy Larson for all the extra help she did for me in my absence, and to everyone else who helped display the quilts, take them back down and pack all the kits. A special thank you to all members and friends of First Lutheran Church who have so generously contributed time and items for Lutheran World Relief. We shipped 54 backpack kits, 16 quilts, 21 baby care kits, 14 personal care kits, 8 fabric kits and 1 box of soap with 137 bars. Lee Mathiason 8

Christmas Eve First Lutheran will offer Christmas Eve services with Holy Communion at 5:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on Monday, December 24. First Lesson: Isaiah 9:2-7 Second Lesson: Titus 2:11-14 Psalm: 96 Gospel: Luke 2:1-20 Giving Tree The Giving Tree is in the church entryway. On the tree are names of underprivileged children and names of seniors, as well as names of less fortunate children from our own congregation. Please pick a name from the tree and give a gift to a child or senior this year! Gift suggestions are listed on each tag. Presents need to be returned to the church no later than Sunday, December 2. Please attach the name tag to your presents. All gifts must be in gift bags. Advent: What s to Come I know it has been a long time since mid-week Advent services have been held. However, disciples of Jesus Christ want to worship. Therefore, let s give more opportunity to do so. Just like Lent, we will be offering meals and worship on Wednesdays in Advent. We have four Wednesday services to get together. This year after the meal, we will have short plays, special music, prayers and scripture. What a great way to begin a new year in our church. Joey Hartshorn will once again be overseeing the Wednesday services. She is seeking talent internally and externally to bring to First Lutheran. ing homes and homebound. Come one and come all and join in the fun of Advent 2018! Here We Come a Caroling... Sometimes I feel like some of the old-fashioned tradition of Christmas has gotten lost over the years. I remember as a teen caroling with the youth group/ choir at our church and I thought, let s do this at First Lutheran Church! NOTE: You don't have to be part of the choir to participate, just ready to share the joy of Christmas with others. So, I thought it would be wonderful to go out and celebrate the Birth of Christ with carols. Please join in on the celebration December 15 from 4-6 p.m. (We will meet at the church at 3:45 p.m. Suggestions ahead of time on whose homes to visit and places we should go are appreciated and welcomed, just give Joey a call ( ) or leave her a message in her mailbox in the office. Annual Parsonage Open House It is that time again! Kris and Pastor Doug are opening up the parsonage for their seasonal open house. We love having you all over, please come and enjoy. We will have some snacks and hot drinks. For Kris and me it is a time to be able to be with all of you that have welcomed us into your home. Now we want to do the same. We enjoy company, especially at the holidays. Oh, if you didn t know, it is not politically incorrect to say holidays, since that is the slang term for the Jewish Holy Days! So Happy Holy Days or Happy Holidays to you all. Please come and join us! What: Parsonage Open House Look for signups for food, singing and acting. Oh, if that was not enough, we have more for Advent. There will be a living nativity, complete Who: YOU When: December 8 from 1-4 pm with some animals in the manger. The choir is Where: 3620 Dakota Ave, South Sioux City NE looking to join with St. Paul United Methodist and bring Christmas/Advent caroling to the nurs- Come one, come all. Oh, invite someone too! 9

Praise be to God! Suddenly a great host of heavenly beings appeared with the angel and began singing praises to God. As the angelic beings departed, the shepherds said to each other, "Let s go to Bethlehem! Let s see the Christ-child!" Yes! First Lutheran Church is going to have a Live Nativity this year! Please join us on Friday, December 21 between 5-7 p.m. and Saturday, December 22 between 3:30-7 p.m. If you are interested in being part of the Nativity, please contact Joey Budget and Annual Meeting It is once again the budget time and then the annual meeting. No one likes to talk about money, and I truly get that. Money always seems to have negative connotations. But Jesus spoke about money too. When money becomes a god, then that presents an issue. The same is said when the lack of money prevents us from doing our calling in ministry. Our Mission Statement: Loving others in in Christ for outreach to all; while providing for God s diversity, calls for us to be in mission. Not to some, but to all. The only way to do that is to be inclusive and to fund the missions. If you recall from the narrative budget last year, mission includes so many things. Keeping the lights on, heating the building and paying for staff, are all part of mission. Without doing these things, there cannot be mission. Mission also has some direct funding that needs to be done, such as taking care of the youth, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Evangelism, Social Ministry, Live Streaming Worship, building maintenance, musical instrument maintenance, and so many other things we do here. 10 Please come to the budget meetings to ask questions, to be informed about how we pay for missions at First Lutheran. Budget times and dates are: Sunday, December 2 following the 9:30 a.m. service Tuesday, December 4 at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, December 8 at 1:00 p.m. Celebration of Christ Celebration of Christ: A Nativity Festival will take place November from 6-8 p.m.; December 1 from 1-7 p.m.; and December 2 from 4-7 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1201 W Clifton Ave, Sioux City. Admission is free. Contact Information Do we have your current address, mailing address and/or phone number(s)? If your phone number has changed or if you are using only your cell phone, please let the office know! We would like to have your current phone number, mailing address and address. You can include them on the attendance pad any Sunday, call us ( ) or us (office@flcssc.org). Card Party Following the 9:30 Cantata on December 9, join Chris Knudsen in the Fellowship Hall. First Lutheran, in honor of Chris 29 years of faithful service to this congregation, will be hosting a card party for him. On December 31, Chris will be retiring. There will be cake for everyone and maybe an extra piece or two for Chris. Bring a card and show your appreciation for all of his faithful years of service. The Perfect Gift Do you stress about finding just the right gift for everyone on your Christmas list? Does it make the season more a hassle than a joy? Pastor Mike Slaughter reminds us that Christmas isn t about

perfect presents for people, as if it were their birthday or ours. Christmas is about the perfect presence of Immanuel, God with us, through the birth of Jesus; it s his birthday, after all! In Christmas Is Not Your Birthday (Abingdon), Slaughter writes, How funny that it can be so hard to find gifts that will please certain family members or friends the people who seem to have everything and yet it is so clear what the Lord of lords and King of kings wants for his birthday. God wants you your time, your talent and your treasure used in service to others. The Greatest Gifts Aren t Always the Most Expensive J.R. Reider, Contemporary Music Leader My stepfather passed away just before Thanksgiving this year. He and mom had been high school sweethearts, then lost touch but found each other many years later and had many great years together. Bob was a real character. A lifelong over the road sales rep for printing companies mostly selling huge custom print jobs for firms throughout the Midwest. If you remember getting Christmas or Easter seals each year, he was the one to either blame or thank. Each Christmas season the purchasing folks he dealt with were used to receiving a gratuity from the firms they dealt with. He used to talk about big screen TV s, vacation trips using company aircraft, cash, and much more being given by competitors. But Bob handed out boxes of Turtles to each of his clients. No, not live ones the candy. He ordered several cases of them each year and handed out one box at each stop no more, no less. Couldn t have been worth more than a few dollars. I asked him once if that put him at a disadvantage dealing with his clients. He said NO! Everyone knew he was Danish. You can always 11 tell a Dane, but you can t tell him much was a regular catchphrase in his world. It also meant he was honest AND frugal. And his clients expected him to deal with them the same way honest and frugal with their print jobs. He rarely lost a customer, even when his bids were a bit higher. Yes, there s a moral to this story the pressure for Christmas giving is relentless big gifts under the tree to family and friends. But giving small gifts can be so much more rewarding! Sometimes just giving of your time and talent can be the best gift of all and it doesn t cost anything more than your time. I am extremely grateful for the singers and musicians I am privileged to lead they sacrifice their time to rehearse and bring music to the congregation each week. I don t always get to tell them so I m saying it here, again! Thanks for all you do! There are many others that volunteer their time and talent to help keep this church running throughout the year. It takes the efforts of many teams and many people they also deserve your thanks and praise. It won t cost a cent, but that thanks you give to them helps make it worthwhile. And as we prepare for 2019, why not volunteer YOUR time and talent, too? The more hands we have working together the more we can accomplish! Mission Statement: Loving others in Christ for outreach to all, while providing for God s diversity. Vision Statement: Building upon the properties that God provides. To reach out in mission to the community.
