We ask that You rekindle in our hearts a new spirit of faith, of prayer and of reconciliation. Inspire us to search out and find ways of bringing one another closer to You. Dear Friends, I just returned from a trip to Russia with my seminary classmate Fr. Bill Konicki. We were ordained the same day 40 years ago, so our trip was a celebration of our anniversary. Russia is a beautiful country and the people are very friendly. They very much want to be friends with Americans and went out of their way to tell us so. Despite their leaders imposing atheistic Communism on them, the Russian people remain deeply religious and many belong to the Russian Orthodox Church. After the collapse of the Soviet empire, the people have flocked to their churches as a source of continued strength and solace. The Russian people suffered greatly in their history, especially under the Communist persecutions and World War II. They remain a kind and wonderful people, filled with and bolstered by their faith. It was my great privilege to meet with many of the Russian people during my trip. I am grateful to Father Egan and Father Pecevich for covering Masses and funerals while I was away. We welcome this week Father Juan D. Echavarria as our new associate pastor. Father Juan is a native of Columbia and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Worcester on June 4, May the Lord bless his priestly ministry among us! I want to thank the members of the Mount Carmel Knights of Columbus for their gift of mulch which several members help spread on our parish grounds. Thanks, men, for your generosity and kindness! At the 10:00 Mass this weekend, we will be awarding scholarships to three of our parish graduating seniors. They are Santina Mac- Gregor, Fabio Mercurio, and James Sena. The money for these scholarships comes from a special fund started by our founding pastor, Msgr. Giocchino Maffei. Father John Capuano and Mary Italian made significant donations to this fund. Recently, a couple, who wish to remain anonymous, made a gift of $100,000 to be used for scholarships for parish religious education. I hope that you are enjoying this beautiful summertime and that you ve had the chance or will have the chance for a summer vacation. Summer blessings! Monsignor Pedone PATIENTS AT UMASS MEDICAL MEMORIAL AND UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES Please notify us if you or a loved one are patients at either of these hospitals and wish to be visited by a priest or deacon. Neither of these hospitals will inform us if our parishioners are patients there, citing a very strict interpretation of HIPPA laws, so we have no way of knowing if a parishioner is a patient there. Also, please notify us if you or a loved are in a nursing home or rehabilitation facility and want to be visited by a priest or deacon. We have no way of knowing if you or a loved one are there unless you inform us. Please call the parish center at If someone needs the Sacrament of the Sick and/or final anointing, please do not wait until the last minute to call us. It is important that the priests can get there in a timely fashion to administer this sacrament.

By Dan Zadra and Kobi Yamada 17 TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many? (JOHN 6:9) The miracle of the Loaves and Fishes is the only miracle which is recorded six times in the Gospel. It carries two important messages. First, no matter how little we have, we always have enough to share. Second, Christ can take our humble gifts and do great things with them if we are just willing to let Him. No gift is too small or insignificant! Don t Miss These Symbolisms at Your Next Mass By Joby Provido As Catholics who have gone to countless Masses, we know the order of the different parts of the Mass, and the responses to the priest s prompts come quite instinctively. But most Catholics might miss the symbolisms built in the liturgy because, well, we never knew they were there. Listed here are come of those symbols in words, objects, and gestures 10th in a Series Breaking of the Bread Before the priest drops a piece of the host into the chalice, he first breaks the host. Then he raises the broken host and says, in the words of St. John the Baptist, Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world This is another visual representation of the broken body of Christ on the cross. But why does John the Baptist call Jesus the Lamb of God? When Abraham asked Isaac to carry the wood on his back on the way up Mount Moriah, the young man said: Father, where is the lamb for the burnt offering? Abraham answered: God himself will provide the lamb The prophetic words of Abraham are fulfilled on Mount Calvary after Jesus carried the wood of the cross on his back up the hill. It reminds us that the Mass is a re-presentation of the sacrifice of Calvary. Vacation Prayer Lord, in our work and play we know your goodness and love. Bless us with joy as we set out for our days of vacation. Let them bring us rest and refreshment. Protect us as we travel. Give us gentle weather and peaceful times. New Members always welcome. 30 Week Directed Prayer Experience The Ignatian Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life A 30 week directed prayer experience in the tradition of St. Ignatius of Loyola is being offered by a team of Jesuits and parishioners experienced in Ignatian prayer. Starting on October 2 nd, each weekly session will be approximately ninety minutes and will include reflection, direction and presentation. Sessions will be held on Tuesday evenings at St. Peter s Church in Worcester adjacent to Clark University. Information nights will be held at St. Rose of Lima in Northborough on August 19 th, St. Mary s in Jefferson on August 26 th and St. Peter s in Worcester on August 28 th, each at 6PM. Hi Everyone, I have been working extremely hard on planning our summer program trips. This is what I have thus far; July 31 - Minute Man National Historic Man - Cost $10.00 per person All buses will leave at 9:00 a.m. Reservations must be made in advance, so I can plan. Our summer program will begin on July 11 at 8:30 a.m. On this day we will have registration and go to the movies leaving at 9:30 a.m. Our first movie we will see this summer is Ferdinand.
