1 September 2018 De Soto United Methodist Church Volume 25, Issue 9 Living Water From the Pastor I think many of us have memories of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. It was a fixture in our household with the always calm Mr. Rogers inviting all of us to learn how to be a good neighbor and inviting us to follow the Neighborhood Trolley to the Land of Make Believe. With a gentle calmness and a pervasive kindness, Fred Rogers demonstrated that regardless of who we are or where we come from we all can learn how to treat one another with dignity and respect, creating a caring community of grace. Trained to be a pastor, Mr. Rogers was most passionate about teaching children to love themselves and others, and to learn about the genuineness of all their emotions and feelings as valid. His shows were simple and without a lot of high tech. He showed millions of people what it meant to be a true neighbor. Any of his lessons could easily translate to the church as we seek to be good neighbors to everyone we encounter. In fact, soon we will be embarking on a journey to learn how to be a better neighbor for our community. Last fall we invited folks from the Neighboring Movement in Wichita to lead us in worship. Their organization, led by Rev. Adam Barlow-Thompson, helps equip congregations with the tools needed to cultivate a more neighborly congregation. Throughout September and October we will be learning more about this wonderful initiative. In the spirit of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, September 9-23 in worship we ll be focusing on the Sermon Series Won t You Be My Neighbor. For three Sundays we ll look at how good neighbors cultivate Abundance, Relationships, & Love in building community connections that open up new pathways to showing God s love for all people. It ll be a fun time in the life of the church as we focus on the message of Mr. Rogers, the love of Christ, and the initiative of the Neighboring Movement. Visit with them about ways they are, or have served. Learn what it is like to be a leader or helper with Youth Group, Children s Church, Sunday school, Bible Explorers, Nursery, or more. 3 KiDS Choir meets Sundays at 9:00 am Calling all children, PreK through 5th grade! Come! Join Linda Rumsey ( ), Kristie Cox, and all your friends for KiDS Choir! We will have FUN singing and praising the Lord Sunday mornings. We begin at 9:00 am with a Bible story, followed by singing, Bible activity, and snack. Look for a letter in your mail box soon. If you do not receive a letter by Sept. 1, please contact Sabrina ASAP so we can be certain we have Bibles for everyone. Families are asked to please complete and return to the church office the postcard included with the letter, or the requested information to Sabrina youthfamily@desotoumc.org. Bible Explorers for Upper Elementary Hey 3rd, 4th, & 5th graders Bible Explorers is for YOU! Join us 5:30-7:00 pm once a month on a Sunday, October through May for a light meal followed by fun, explorative ways to learn about the Bible and what it teaches us as we grow as disciples of Jesus. Our meeting dates are: Oct. 7, Nov. 11, Dec. 9, Jan. 13, Feb. 10, Mar. 3, April 14, and May 5. Begins October 7

Adults interested in serving as helpers and chaperones contact Sabrina: youthfamily@desotoumc.org. 5th Quarter Event for High Schoolers September 28 following the DHS home football games, High School students are invited to 5th Quarter at Cause Coffee/De Soto Youth Ministries (DYM). A safe place to hangout with friends following the game. De Soto UMC, De Soto Baptist Church, and DYM are teaming up to offer this event. First pizza slice and soda are free, more for $1 each. Plus beverages and treats available for purchase at Cause Coffee. Games and activities too. DUMC is providing the beverages for this event. Our book this month is Hiding in the Light, Why I Risked Everything to Leave Islam and Follow Jesus, by Rifqa Bary. Fellowship lunch before meeting. Crafting experience not necessary! We will have stations set up for each step of creating the products. On September 20th we will wrap up the cork crafts and frames. Supplies needed: Glue guns (to borrow), Glue sticks, Ribbon, Jute / Burlap Twine, Wooden letters, Box cutters (fresh/sharp), Ink Pads (all colors). THE UPPER ROOM DEVOTIONAL MAGAZINE If you have not wandered around our Narthex and Parlor and found the Upper Room Magazine each month you are missing an opportunity to read a daily devotion written by people just like you, with a scripture, prayer and thought for the day. The scripture is usually a sentence or two to accompany the story. These are very short articles and take perhaps 10 minutes a day to read, which may be the 10 minutes you had decided to add each day to nourish your spiritual growth this month. Whether or not you have ever used a devotional resource, we invite you to pick up a copy this month and try it out. We pay a fraction of what you would pay for this resource and want to have it easily available for you.

6 In DUMC Won t You Be My Neighbor? Mr. Rogers influenced millions with his tv show Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. The biblical witness has a lot to say about what it means to be a neighbor. It is a key theme of cultivating a community of faith that thinks outwardly. September 9-23 in worship we ll be focusing on what it means to be a neighbor and how we all can live out our calling as faithful disciples by reaching out to others. September 9: Cultivating Abundance Matthew 14:15-21 September 16: Cultivating Relationships Philippians 2:1-5 September 23: Cultivating Love Romans 12:9-12; 13:8-10 The Final Sizzling Hot Topic for A Sizzling Hot Summer: September 2 Summer is not quite over yet as we conclude our Summer Sermon Series. Using Psalm 139:14, we ll explore in worship the intersection of our faith lives, the call for dignity, and our current conversation around issues of human sexuality and the church. Recognizing that we are not of one mind on this but all are seeking unity of love in the name of Christ, join us over Labor Day weekend for this important moment in the life of faith.
