Our teachers come forward to teach, nurture, challenge, and mentor our children, who are our future. And with them, they bring their own special way of educating our kids. Have you ever wondered what and how our teachers teach? Mr. Don is our Wednesday, 1st grade teacher. He has been a co-teacher for a number of years and decided he wanted to give teaching a try this year. And he has done a phenomenal job - from the R Factor of Religion, Reverence, Respect, and Responsibility, to his teaching of the Rosary (he provides the mysteries in segments of coloring sheets), to his woodworking ability in creating a scale sanctuary for the kids to see and understand his teachings of the items found in our church. 3 PA R I S H H A P P E N I N G S P G. 3 Dear Parishioners, I pray that as the New Year has started, hope may be rising in your hearts. I have now been firmly planted in the new academic semester with my own sense of hope rising. So many classes are nourishing my curiosity ( New Testament studies, especially the Gospels, Homiletics, The Theology of the Church, etc ) and my formator and brothers are all around to support me. Though this is the writing intensive semester for theology, my classmates and I are smiling more often than not. To see the men I live with intentionally preparing for their lives as priest urges me on to be more intentional about my own preparation. We all agree that our lives are not our own. As much as we may be tempted and may desire to be selfish with our time, the brothers are here to call us all to higher sanctity for the Lord and the Church. The motivation is love. Each seminarian I am living with has a deep love for their home Diocese, the longing to serve and to pastor the faithful, and that pushes us toward the goal we all seek: to become the holy, faithful, and dedicated priests we long to be. I ask you all to keep the men here close to your hearts as we are moving toward February ( which tends to be the hardest of all the months in seminary ) Please also keep Adam Bradshaw of the Archdiocese of Denver in prayer for his Diaconate Ordination 2/10/2018. Know of my love for you all, the Diocese of Phoenix, and my daily prayers that you all may encounter the Father s love, through Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit. 5 Discipleship Time to think about making a commitment to improve our prayer life Being a disciple isn t for the faint of heart. It s a calling that s never fully achieved. We must continually work to improve our relationship with God knowing that the perfection achieved by Jesus Christ, our model, is unattainable by us from this side of heaven. But we persevere, knowing that with His grace, we can improve. Small Christian Communities Our last Small Christian Communities Kick-off retreat starts on February 17th. Parishioners from the Communities of Philippi and Corinth will be receiving invitation calls this week. All Parishioners Are Invited. Sign-ups after this week s Masses. This is your last opportunity to attend. What is God Calling you to So, as we did during our Stewardship of Giving season, we ask that St Rose parishioners prayerfully consider making a commitment to God, to improve their relationship with Him through prayer. You ll find a Stewardship of Prayer Commitment Card on the parish website under Discipleship to help you consider how you might increase and improve your prayer life and ultimately your relationship with God the Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit. 6 Pg. 6 GOSPEL MEDITATION 5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME For most of us, the dynamic between prayer and action is imperfect. Breakfast needs to be made and the kids dressed. Work demands our energy and additional responsibilities fill our evenings and weekends. Then there is the football game or a new TV series to stream. After all, don t we need to relax? We are all busy. But just imagine Jesus situation in today s Gospel. He heals Peter s mother-in-law, drives out the demons, and cures diseases late into the night. With very little sleep, he arises before dawn to capture some peace and quiet, only to find those who were with him pursued him. How often do we feel pursued by the harried commitments, even when we try to seek rest? Perhaps we can learn something from the response of Jesus. Jesus models two key things: the essential nature of prayer and the essential call of vocation. He went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. Despite inevitable exhaustion Jesus prioritizes time with the Father. We might not have easy access to deserts and mountaintops, But today s Gospel challenges us to take intentional time set apart for God. We can designate a prayer chair in a corner of our home or leave a little earlier to pick our children up from school so we can snatch time in a nearby chapel. We can pray the rosary on our commute or take the dog for a long walk in silence. However, when the Apostles arrive, Jesus doesn t linger overlong in the deserted place or make an excuse for why he can t return with his friends. Jesus is true to his calling. He continues on in his state of life, serving the people nearest to him. Like Jesus, we are invited to set intentional time for communion with God so that we can be refreshed and empowered for our communion with others. Everyone finds himself or herself in a valley once in awhile. How we got there is not nearly as important as how are we going to get out. Everyday stewards are called to be grateful for all things large and small. It is easier to be grateful for obvious things like family, health and life itself, than it is to look for the ordinary gifts in our life. When we cultivate a sense of wonder and thankfulness for the many little things in life we find ourselves more resilient in times of trial. We can look out our window and see all the things people take too easily for granted. Imagine life without some of the simplest things like warmth, water and furniture. There are people in this world that long for all of those things. But God has given them for your benefit and for you to share with others. Before Lent begins in a couple of weeks, take the time to create a list of at least 10 things that you normally take for granted. Keep that list handy and maybe add to it from time-to-time. When life seems hard and that cloud seems to hang over heads, bring out the list and let gratefulness lift you up and out of your plight so that once again you can be about Father s work.
