W I T H T H E W O RD MESSAGE FOR THE WEEK For most of us, the dynamic between prayer and action is imperfect. Breakfast needs to be made and the kids dressed. Work demands our energy and additional responsibilities fill our evenings and weekends. Then there's the football game or a new TV series to stream. After all, don't we need to relax? We're all busy. But just imagine Jesus' situation in today's Gospel. He heals Peter's mother-in-law, drives out demons, and cures diseases late into the night. With very little sleep, he arises before dawn to capture some peace and quiet, only to find "those who were with him pursued him." How often do we feel pursued by the harried commitments, even when we try to seek rest? Jesus models two key things: the essential nature of prayer and the essential call of vocation. "He went off to a deserted place, where he prayed." Despite inevitable exhaustion, Jesus prioritizes time with the Father. We might not have easy access to deserts and mountaintops, but today's Gospel challenges us to take intentional time set apart for God. We can designate a "prayer chair" in a corner of our home or leave a little earlier to pick our children up from school so we can snatch time in a nearby chapel. We can pray the rosary on our commute or take the dog for a long walk in silence. However, when the Apostles arrive, Jesus doesn't linger overlong in the deserted place or make an excuse for why he can't return with his friends. Jesus is true to his calling. He continues on in his state of life, serving the people nearest to him. Like Jesus, we are invited to set intentional time for communion with God so that we can be refreshed and empowered for our communion with others. SUNDAY READINGS First Reading: Job 7:4 Job struggles with anxious and hopeless feelings. As people of faith, how can we best help family or friends who really believe, "I shall not see happiness again?" Second Reading: 1 Cor 9:22 Paul speaks to the Corinthians of his "obligation" to preach the Gospel - the good news of Jesus Christ. What actions does your faith in Christ compel you to do? Gospel: Mk 1:32-34 Mark presents Jesus as a miracleworker from the earliest stages of his public ministry. In what ways do you think it was a challenge to balance the healing and the preaching?

3 F A I T H F O R M A T I O N RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS Sometimes we can feel like we are living the life of Job: everything is going wrong all at the same time. Everyone finds himself or herself in a valley once in awhile. How we got there is not nearly as important as how are we going to get out. Everyday stewards are called to be grateful for all things, large and small. It is easier to be grateful for obvious things like family, health, and life itself, than it is to look for the ordinary gifts in our life. When we cultivate a sense of wonder and thankfulness for the many little things in life we find ourselves more resilient in times of trial. We can look out our window and see all those gifts in creation. We can look around our home and see all the things people take too easily for granted. Imagine life without some of the simplest things like clothing, warmth, water, and furniture. There are people in this world that long for all of those things. But God has given them for your benefit and for you to share with others. Before Lent begins in a couple weeks, take the time to create a list of at least 10 things that you normally take for granted. Keep that list handy and maybe add to it from time-to-time. When life seems hard and that cloud seems to hang over our heads, bring out the list and let gratefulness lift you up and out of your plight so that once again you can be about LIVE THE LITURGY When we suffer, we can easily find ourselves thinking that we have been abandoned by God or have done something to displease him and are now paying the price. Suffering is not God's fault. The reality of suffering and death is much more complicated than this and even somewhat mysterious. When Jesus preached the Gospel, it was made clear that suffering has meaning and always brings with it new life. It requires faith in order to understand this mystery. The Gospel brings us new life both here and in the life to come. This is truly Good News! When this Good News is understood by the believer it stirs within us a passion to urgently P R A Y E R S & P R A Y E R F U L O P P O R T U N I T I E S Please Pray For: All of our cluster parishioners in hospitals, at home and in the nursing homes & for those in the Armed Forces. 4 C L U S T E R N E W S All ladies of St. Joseph are invited and encouraged to join us at our Ladies Guild meeting, THIS Sunday, February 4th, after the 9:30am Mass. St. Peter Altar & Rosary Society, please note: We will meet Thursday, February 15th, 9:30am at St. Peter, (a change from the usual second Thursday of the month). THINK SPRING ~ Dinner Planning St. Peter s Altar & Rosary society are beginning to plan the Spring Dinner to be held on April 15th. Parishioners are asked to begin thinking about preparing chance baskets for this event. Any questions can be directed to Irene Cooley at or cooleijc@chibardun.net. We look forward to the wonderful ideas you come up with and thank you Offertory Collections, Mass Intentions, Special Envelopes, Gifts, Memorial Donations, CSA Where does my money go? GENERAL OFFERINGS: As of December, all the offertory collections are being counted and recorded in our cluster administration office in Barron. Each collection, including envelopes and loose change is placed in security-sealed envelopes and verified by multiple signatures before it leaves the parish it was collected in. Once the money arrives at the administration office, it is counted and separated by parish envelope and cause. All loose dollars and coins, are considered a donation to the church it was collected in. Be assured, that if you are at a different parish for Mass, and place your weekly offering envelope in whatever church you are attending, that your donation still goes directly to your home parish and is recorded appropriately as a donation from you. Your offertory gift keeps the lights and heat on at your parish, maintains your church and other parish campus buildings, provides fair wages and benefits to parish staff, helps provide Catholic education through your cluster faith formation program, supports music ministry and provides for other outreach ministry in your community. Your support allows your parish to share the Gospel message and the joy of knowing Jesus Christ. MASS INTENTIONS: When someone requests a Mass to be said, a ten-dollar payment is collected. This money is placed directly into the parish stipend account. As the Mass gets offered, the priest is then paid this ten dollars directly. The Mass stipend paid to the priest, is in addition to the payment he receives from the parish to perform the Mass. A Mass intention, allows you to specify the person the Mass is to be said for/offered for, the church you would like the Mass to be said at, and to request a date for the Mass. If a date is unavailable, our cluster secretary will discuss an alternate date with you. We are currently working on a new records system which will also assist us in contacting the requestor, two weeks in advance of a Mass being said, as a reminder that their intention is being fulfilled. GIFTS/MEMORIAL DONATIONS: If a person donates to a parish as a memorial or in honor of someone, it is placed into a Memorial Fund for that parish. If the donor wishes for the money to be used for a specific project, they can specify that in the memo of the check or attach a letter with the donation, and it will be used for the purpose specified by the donor. When a project need arises, we will review the memorial donations and use any money that was specified for general care or for the project specifically at hand. NEW: We have implemented a new recording process for all memorial gifts to the parishes. The person it is to honor, the donor, donor contact information and the desired purpose of the gift is recorded. When the money is used/spent by the parish, correspondence will be made to the donor to make them aware that the gift has been appreciated. For example, a donation has been made as a memorial, specifically for a new roof in a parish. When the roof is complete and bills are paid, we will mail the donor a card stating that their gift of a specific amount was used in honor of their loved one. When possible, large donations will additionally be recognized with visible, engraved plates, near/on the item purchased. SPECIAL ENVELOPES: Throughout the year, there are special collection envelopes available for use, which include: building maintenance, vigil lights, religious education, etc. Any donation put in these envelopes is deposited into a specific account, matching the front of the envelope, for each parish. Money donated in these envelopes is then used for that specific project or ministry. It is not placed into our general funds for other purposes. CSA OFFERINGS: The Catholic Service Appeal money goes directly to the Diocese of Superior, to support it s missions and ministries, which in turn supports each of our parishes. This is very important and is each parish s responsibility to pay in full. The amount due calculated for each parish is a percentage based on what is annually collected by the parish through general envelope and loose collections. Note that all special envelopes, gifts or memorials are not included in this calculation. FRI SAT SUN Communion Service, STP 4pm 6pm Mass, ABVM Mass, STP 9:30am 11am Mass, STP Mass, STJ Mass, STB

5 CLUSTER NEWS CLUSTER-WIDE COLLECTION Love Your Neighbor We are coming to the end of our 2nd Annual Love Your Neighbor Food Pantry and Homeless Shelter collection. Please bring as many items in as you are able by Wednesday, February 7th! Our cluster goal is to collect 2500 items to disperse to the Chetek, Barron & Cameron Food Pantries and to Benjamin s House Shelter. Look for drop locations at all parishes. You may be thinking, I ve already donated. God says, if you have a warm home, a full refrigerator and pantry...then you can give some more! ALL PARISHIONERS ARE INVITED TO A SPECIAL PRESENTATION FEATURING THE ALY-ALEIGHA BAND, ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7TH, 6PM AT ST. PETER. ABOUT THE BAND: Aly Aleigha and her band released their first full-length album in September 2016, a year after Aly's debut EP "Jealous Love." Starting as a ragtag group of musical friends playing local gigs (such as the Homegrown Music Festival in Duluth), they have since been swept up in a whirlwind of recording an LP ("The Labyrinth") and traveling around the USA performing their music. Inspirations for their sound include groups like The Head and The Heart, The Oh Hello's, Josh Garrels, The Lumineers, and We the Wild. Shortly after their Album Release Show in September last year, the band traveled to Paoli, PA to play at a music festival for over 3,000 people, where they received the "2016 Emerging Artist Award" sponsored by Relevant Radio. In August 2017 the band played at City on the Hill Music Festival among artists such as the Newsboys, Mercy Me, and Britt Nicole for a crowd of over 3500 and they are grateful to continue to play Aly's original music at various venues throughout the country. On January 24, 2018, Aly Aleigha signed with the record label - Rekindle Records located in Chicago, IL. She is excited to continue to share her music and looks forward to working with Rekindle Records. Reminder: ALL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FAMILIES, This is your class for the week! ALL Families are requested to come!! BLEST ART will be visiting our cluster parishes this weekend on behalf of the Christian families in Bethlehem, Palestine. Our mission is to support those families in the Holy Land. For centuries, the Christians in and around Bethlehem have earned a living by carving religious olive wood art to sell to visiting pilgrims. We will have hand-carved nativity sets, statues, crosses, rosaries, and many other pieces of beautiful olive wood art. We kindly invite you to visit our display and to consider purchasing a piece of art from the Holy Land. In doing so, you will help support the many families who
